Scientists have known for a long time about a link between chronic (慢性的) stress and obesity. But they couldn’t find the key factor in the past. Recently researchers at Georgetown University in Washington, D. C. made what they call a “perfect advance”.

Dr Zofia Zukowska says, “Thanks to our hard work of the past years we have actually discovered the exact reason why people get fat when they are stressed and eat a high fat, high sugar diet. And by knowing the reason,

we can now deal with obesity.” Dr Zukowska and her colleagues put laboratory mice under the same type of stress they would experience in the wild such as meeting up with a more aggressive and dangerous mouse. They then fed these mice a fast food diet. The mice became fat.

What’s more, they found an increased amount of a chemical called neuropeptide Y, or NPY for short, in these mice, which is activated by stress and helps stimulate (刺激) the growth of fat cells. And the fat in mice grew around their middle, just as it does in humans. Middle fat is the most dangerous kind, as it affects the heart and liver, causing heart disease, adding to cholesterol (胆固醇) levels, high blood pressure, and so on. But the researchers found they could block the fat-causing NPY with another chemical, and thus could manipulate obesity effectively.

To their pleasant surprise, NPY seems to work in the human body much like it does in mice. If so, Dr Zofia Zukowska says it would be a major advance in the battle against obesity, which will be used to cure the patient of the disease caused by stress and obesity. However, the researchers say many more studies need to be done before human trials can begin. (FOR MORE INFORMA TION, CLICK HERE.)

The mind plays an important role in every success. In order to get any kind of success in any field, one needs to use mind power.

A person usually knows what he wants to get. Some people do not really know what they want. This is because they aren’t good at focused thinking. They have no willpower and self-discipline. In this case, one needs to think, and to find out what he wants to achieve.

After discovering what you want to achieve, you need to come up with a plan of action. You need to know what you have to do first, and how to continue. All of this requires careful planning. You should write down your plan, as this will help you get a plan and also will help you remember it.

After deciding on a goal, you need to hold in your mind a clear image of your goal. You need to see it finished. This step requires you to use your imagination, which is a mind power. Not everyone can see clear mental images, but regular training can do wonders. You may, for example, look at photos of what you want to achieve, and then close your eyes, and try to see it in your imagination. This will improve your imagination. At this point you have acquired a focused mind.

Another important power of the mind is thought transference. You need to be able to transfer your thoughts to other people, who might help you realize your plans. You need to be kind and persuasive; otherwise, they won’t listen and won’t care. You need to be able to throw away your and their doubts. To be able to do so you need control over your thoughts, willpower, self-discipline and patience. All of these are mental tools, which the more you use, the more you will perfect them.

60. If you want to succeed, first you need to _________.

A. work hard

B. set up a goal

C. get much help

D. have willpower

61. When you come up with a goal, you should _________.

A. plan carefully and write it down

B. plan quickly and do as you have planned

C. make a careful plan and recite it

D. make a long plan and carry it out at once

62. After setting up a goal, we need our imagination because we _________.

A. know the importance of our goal

B. can make sure we make progress

C. need to see a clear image of our goal

D. can overcome the difficulties we meet

63. According to Paragraph 5, if you want to succeed, you must ________.

A. listen to whatever other people say

B. work hard and not waste your time

C. be good at getting help from others

D. insist on realizing your goal

C

Researchers say they have improved the accuracy of automatic face recognition systems, which are being used more and more by crime prevention and national security agencies. The investigators have created what they call an “average face” that allows the machines to make a correct identification in every case.

Common automatic face recognition systems are convenient but not very reliable. There won’t be a match if the person’s face is not contained in the computer, or a match may be overlooked if a picture that is in the computer looks greatly different from the individual standing in front of the system’s electronic eye.Experts say that’s because the stored photograph may be several years old and bear little resemblance to the individual, or the pose (姿势) or light may be different. Psychologist Rob Jenkins believes they solved the problem.

They randomly (随机地) gathered mages of 25 famous male persons on the Internet and put the photos into a face recognition system that had a collection of 31,000 photos of famous faces. The recognition system accurately identified the individuals about half of the time. The researchers then created what they call an “average face” of each person by taking his images and averaging them out. They did that by removing “unhelpful” aspects of the images, such as lighting effects, and highlighting structural features of the face, Jenkins said.

“So, what we were able to show is that if you take these highly variable images, and apply the averaging process to them, then the recognition performance goes right up. It goes from 54 p ercent up to 100 percent. So it’s a really huge leap,” she said.

Jenkins sees no reason why “average face” photos could not be made of everyone and used for identification purposes. He says the average faces could also be used with existing face recognition technology at airport check points.

64. Common automatic face recognition systems are not very reliable because ______.

A. the computer can’t store enough images and some important information

B. the individual in front of the system’s electronic eye is always nervous

C. it’s hard to put so many people’s images into a computer

D. the system still has difficulty overcoming some practical problems

65. The underlined word “resemblance” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “______”.

A. guidance

B. likeness

C. connection

D. element

66. Paragraph 3 mainly tells us about ______.

A. the experience of the automatic face recognition systems being used

B. the advantages of this newly-invented automatic face recognition system

C. how the experts improved the recognition systems to make them work effectively

D. the effects of using recognition systems on famous male persons

67. From the last paragraph, we can infer that ______.

A. Jenkins has no hope that this recognition system can be used in other fields

B. not everybody can benefit from this recognition system

C. this recognition system is likely to have a good future

D. this recognition system is convenient but not practical

Artists and designers both create visual works using a/an 1 knowledge background, but their reasons for doing so are 2 different. Some designers consider themselves artists, but few artists consider themselves 3 . So what exactly is the difference between art and design? Perhaps the most fundamental difference that we can all agree on is their 4 . Typically, the process of creating a work of art starts with nothing, a blank sheet of paper. 2019届上海市各高中名校高三英语题型分类专题汇编--阅读理解B篇--老师版(带答案已校对珍藏版)

III. Reading Comprehension Section B Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. B Kettlebells do not hurt people. People do. A kettlebell will get your respect – the easy way or the hard way. Here is the easy way. 1. Get a medical clearance. Get clearance, especially from an orthopedist and a cardiologist. The latter is no joking matter, since kettlebell training can be extremely intense. 2. Always be aware of your surroundings. Find a training area with a non-slippery surface on which you are not afraid to drop a kettlebell. The area must be clear of objects you might trip over – including other kettlebells – or that you might hit with a kettlebell. There should be no people or animals in a radius where you could injure them. 3. Train barefoot or wear shoes with a flat, thin sole and room for the toes to spread. Training barefoot is superior for health and performance reasons. If you must wear shoes, wear Converse Chuck Taylors, Vibram Five Fingers, or similar shoes that have thin soles and do not pinch the toes together. You have sensory receptors on the bottoms of your feet that make you stronger and improve balance and coordination. Wearing traditional shoes diminishes the ability of these receptors to work properly, and therefore inhibits performance and can increase the risk of injury. Go native. 4. Never contest for space with a kettlebell. Do not try to save a rep that has gone wrong. Guide the kettlebell to fall harmlessly, and move out of the way if necessary. And remember, quick feet are happy feet. 5. Practice all safety measures at all times. Respect every kettlebell, even the lightest one. Always use perfect form picking up and setting down a kettlebell. The set is not over until the bell is safely parked.
