大学英语A2一、阅读理解From the time we were babies we have been taught our manners. We are taught how to hold a knife and a fork and not to talk with our mouths full. We are taught how to shake hands and when to stand and when to sit and the way to introduce people.Sometimes good manners in one place are very bad manners somewhere else. Almost everywhere eating together means that you are very friendly to each other. But in parts of Polynesia it is bad manners to be seen eating at all. They politely turn their backs on each other when they are taking food. Some East Africans spit four times as a kind of blessing(祝福). They do it to show that they want a sick person to get well, or to bless a new born baby. In most other places, spitting means just something completely different. It's something to do to show that you hate someone. When we go to visit someone we say "Hello" and "How are you" and things like that. If you were visiting an East African village, everyone would be very careful not to pay any attention to you. The polite thing there would be for you to go quietly, without speaking to anyone, and sit beside your friend. You would wait until he had finished what he was doing and then he would begin talking to you.In a village in Arab, a visitor walks behind all the tents until he gets to the one he wants to visit. If he passed in front,he would be invited into each tent and asked to eat. It was rude to refuse.1.We have been taught________.A.it's bad manners to stand and to sitB.it's good manners to hold a knife and a forkC.it's good manners not to talk with our mouths fullD.how to shake hands when we introduce people答案:C2.In parts of Polynesia it's not polite________.A.to be eating aloneB.to stand eatingC.to be seen eatingD.to take food away答案:C3.In most places, spitting means________.A.a kind of blessingB.you want a sick person to get wellC.you give a new-born baby the blessingD.you hate someone答案:D4.If you visit an East African village, you________.A.had better say "Hello" or "How are you" to othersB.will keep quiet and not to speak to anyoneC.should be very careful and not to pay any attention to othersD.must wait until the villagers have finished their work and then begin to talk to them答案:B5.If you pass in front of the tents in Arab, ________.A.you would be invited in and eat in each tentB.you just refuse to go into the tentC.you can walk behind all the tentsD.you can't get to the one you want to visit答案:A“You’re trying to control my life,” says my nine-year-old son. “I don’t know why you think you can do that, but you can’t.” I received this bit of infor mation after I asked Gabriele to put his dirty socks in the basket. And I get no sympathy from my mother, who says,“You let him have his way from the beginning.”It’s true. I have always asked Gabriele’s opinion, found out how he felt about things - treated him as my peer, not my child. And what have I got from my troubles? A lot of back talk. At least I’m not alone; it’s a complaint heard among parents across the country. It’s not just that we’re confused by the contradictory advice offered in parenting bo oks. The fact is, in an effort to break away from how we were raised - to try something more liberal than our parents’ “do it because I say so”approach - our generationhas gone too far. “Today’s parents want to be young, so they try to be friends with thei r children,”says Kathy Lynn, a parenting educator.“When it comes to discipline, our society has gone from one extreme to the other,”says Ron Moorish, a behavior specialist. “We used to use the strap, to intimidate. Then we had permissiveness, and now it’s about giving children choices and allowing them to learn from their own experiences.”Real discipline, says Moorish, is about teaching. “By correcting our children when they do something wrong, we teach them how to behave properly,”he says. But this only works, he emphasizes, if parents regain their position of authority. Children will always be children. The key is for parents to choose to take the time to guide and teach their kids.Rita Munday, a mother of four children, couldn’t believe the dramas that played out in the children’s shoe store she operated. She often saw children insist on having the high-priced, brand-name shoes. And even when the mother didn’t want to spend the money, she would give in when the kid started acting up and throwing shoes around.Rhonda Radice, Munday’s younger colleague, is one parent who has bucked the trend and is proud of it. “I don’t negotiate with them. You can’t. I’ve seen parents come into the store and bribe their children to behave. You shouldn’t have to buy love and respect.”6.The author’s way of treating her son ____________.A.is shared by many parentsB.is encouraged by her motherC.proves to be quite successfulD.shows little concern for the child答案:A7.It can be inferred from the passage that __________.A.parents should learn to make friends with their childrenB.parents need to follow the advice of parenting booksC.today’s children enjoy more freedom than the previous generationD.today’s parents are better at raising children than the previous generation答案:C8.According to the passage, to have “discipline”means that parents should ___________.A.adopt the “do it because I say so”approachB.teach their children to understand the rulesC.negotiate with their children for a decisionD.never allow their children to have their ways答案:B9.If Ronda Radice is the parent who has “bucked the trend”, which of the following can also be cited as the example for “bucking the trend”?A.Parents buy whatever their children want.B.Parents treat their children as their equals.C.Parents make decisions for their children.D.Parents maintain authority over their children.答案:D10.The main point of the passage is to __________.pare different ways of raising childrenB.analyze the problems faced by today’s parentsC.explain the importance of understanding childrenD.point out the mistakes made by the older generation答案:B二、词汇与语法11.My new house is really ________ for me because I can go to work in 10 minutes on foot.A.availableB.affordableC.convenientfortable答案:C12.Bob doesn't look his age, I guess he is somewhere in ________.A.his fortyB.his fortiesC.fortiesD.forty答案:B13.A good ad often uses words ______ people attach positive meanings.A.in whichB.to whichC.whichD.that答案:B14.― Cathy, this is Mike. Baldocchi suddenly had to become a family caregiver, something that she wasn’t prepared for. “I was flying by the seat of my pants,”says Baldocchi, an employment specialist in San Francisco. Both of her parents are 83, and she knew her father couldn’t handle her mother’s care. The hospital recommended putting her mother in a nursing home. Baldocchi wasn’t willing to do that. But moving her back into her parents’home created other problems. Baldocchi, 48, is married and lives about a mile away from her parents. She has a full-time job and has back problems that make it difficult for her to lift her mother. “I couldn’t do it all,”she says. “But I didn’t even know how to find help.”B With help from the Family Caregiver Alliance, she eventually hired a live-in caregiver. “But even if you plan intellectually and legally, you’re never ready for the emotional impact,”Baldocchi says. In the first two months after her mother’s stroke, she lost about 30 pounds as stress mounted. More than 42 million Americans provide family caregiving for an adult who needs help with daily activities, according to a 2009 survey by the AARP. An additional 61.6 million provided at least some care during the year. And many are unprepared.C While many parents lack an advance care directive, it’s the most basic and important step they can take. The directive includes several parts, including: a durable power of attorney, which gives someone legal authority to make financial decisions on another’s behalf; a health care proxy, which is similar to the power of attorney, except it allows someone to make decisions regarding medical treatment; and a living will that outlines instructions for end-of-life care. (For example, parents can say if they want to be kept alive by artificial measures.) “It’s invaluable for the kids, because it’s hard to make those decisions for a parent,”says Jennifer Cona, an elder- law attorney at Genser Dubow Genser & Cona in Melville, N.Y. An advance care directive is the first line of defense if a situation arises, says Kathleen Kelly, executive director of the Family Caregiver Alliance, which supports and educates caregivers. Without an advance directive, the family will have to petition the court to be appointed the parent’s legal guardian, says .D It’s important for families to talk about long-term care so the adult children know their parents, preferences, wishes and goals, says Lynn Feinberg, a caregiving expert at AARP. But it’s not an easy conversation. Elderly parents are sometimes suspicious of their children’s financial motives, says Susan John, a financial planner at Financial Focus in Wolfeboro, N.H. One client asked John to hold a family meeting because they needed an intermediary to talk about financial issues, she says. And when there are many siblings, the family decisions can become a three-ring circus with much acrimony, says Ann-Margaret Carrozza, an elder-law attorney in Glen Cove, N.Y. Families who need information and help sorting out disagreements can call on elder-law attorneys, financial planners, geriatric care managers and caregiver support groups. In February, AARP said it will offer its members a new caregiving support service through financial services firm Genworth.E Many families are unprepared for quick decisions, especially when they find out that Medicare doesn’t pay for long-term care, Feinberg says. The median cost of a year in a private room at a nursing home in 2011 was $77,745, according to Genworth. And only those who have spent most of their assets can qualify for Medicaid to pay for the nursing home.F Assisted living is another option. Residents can have their own apartment to maintain some independence. But the facilities generally provide personal care services, such as meals, housekeeping and assistance with activities. Still, it’s not cheap: The national median cost in 2011 was $39,135, according to Genworth. Assisted living isn’t covered by Medicaid.G If they have a choice, at least 90% of elderly parents prefer to stay at home as long as they can, according to AARP research. But if the parents can no longer safely live at home, it can be hard for children to move them into an adult care facility. There may be another option. Sometimes the home can be modified so a parent can stay there. For example, Baldocchi put in a chair lift for her mother. She also arranged for a home caregiver.H Family caregivers take over many responsibilities. One might manage a parent’s finances, while another sibling will take the parent to doctors" appointments and shopping. Those who move in with a parent take on a significant and sustained burden of care. Jan Walker moved into her mother’s home in Leesburg, Fla. After her mother, who is 83, had fallen, she wasn’t able to get around as well. Walker, 55, has three brothers. But she is the only daughter, is divorced and has no children. “I always knew that this was the role that I would have, and I guess my mind was prepared forit,”says Walker, who now is a full-time caregiver and works from home as a tutorial instructor for a digital scrapbooking website. “When you get into the trenches, it’s literally baptism by fire,”she says. “New things come up. It’s not just about advance planning for finances or medical care. It’s everything,”she says.I Caregivers need to also watch their own health. “There is such a thing as caregiver burnout, ”Cona says. Among female caregivers 50 and older, 20% reported symptoms of depression, according to a 2010 study on working caregivers by MetLife. “It’s a hard job,”Walker says. “But most worthwhile things are hard. She was always there for me when I needed a helping hand. It’s only natural that I be here for her now.”g11. When elderly parents cannot live at home safely, their children can change their home instead of sending them to an adult care facility.d12. To talk about long-term care is not easy because sometimes aged parents are suspicious of their children’s financial motives.h13. Besides advance planning for finances or medical care, family caregivers take over many other responsibilities.c14. The difference between a durable power of attorney and a health care proxy is that the latter allows someone to make decisions regarding medical treatment. 3a15. Baldocchi did not want to send her mother to a nursing home, but she had difficulty taking care of her.b16. Over 42 million caregivers helped an adult with everyday activities in the USA in 2009.d17. If a family needs information or help to sort out disagreements, there are many people they can call on.a18. Caregivers should pay attention to their own health, or they may burn out or become depressed.c19. One will have to petition the court to be the parent’s legal guardian, if there is no advance directive.f20. The national median cost of assisted living in 2011 was $39,135 and it is not covered by Medicaid.Section CDirections: There are 2 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each questions or statement there are 4 choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best answer.Passage OneQuestions 21-25 are based on the following passage:There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals. Short-range goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possible months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, out long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without theachievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-range goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-range goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.2a1. Our long-term goals mean a lot______.A) if we complete our short-range goalsB) if we cannot reach solid short-term goalsC) if we write down the datesD) if we put forward some plans22. New short-term goals are built upon______.A) two years B) long-term goalsC) current activities D) the goals that have been completed23.When we complete each step of our goals ,______.A) we will win final successB) we are overwhelmedC) we should build up confidence of successD) we should strong desire for setting new goals24.Once our goals are drawn up,_______.A) we should stick to them until we complete themB) we may change our goals as we have new ideas and opportunitiesC) we had better wait for the exciting news of successD) we have made great decision25.It is implied but not stated in the passage that ______.A) those who have long-term goals will succeedB) writing down the dates may discourage youC) the goal is only a guide for us to reach our destinationD) every should have a goalPassage TwoQuestions 26-30 are based on the following passage:The economy of the United states after 1952 was the economy of a well-fed, almost fully employed people. Despite occasional alarms, the country escaped any postwar depression and lived in a state of boom. A n economic survey of the year 1955, a typical year of the 1950’s, may be typical as illustrating the rapid economic growth ofthe decade. The national output was value at 10 percent above that of 1954 (1955 output was estimated at 392 billion dollars). The production of manufacturers was about 40 percent more than it had averaged in the years immediately following World War 2. The country’s business spent about 30billion dollars for new factories and machinery. National income available for spending was almost a third greater than it had been it had been in 1950. Consumers spent about 256 billion dollars; that is about 700 million dollars a day, or about twenty-five million dollars every hour, all round the clock. Sixty-five million people held jobs and only a little more than two million wanted jobs but could not find them. Only agriculture complained that it was not sharing in the room. To some observers this was an ominous echo of the mid-1920’s. As farmer’s share of their products declined, marketing costs rose. But there were, among the observers of the national economy, a few who were not as confident as the majority. Those few seemed to fear that the boom could not last and would eventually lead to the opposite-depression.26. 大学英语A2一、阅读理解Teachers have become especially important to the future of public education in the U.S. But with the number of teachers increasing, the nation faces another problem -the shortage of teaching talents (人才). That's why hundreds of school districts across the country are looking for ways to attract, reward and keep good teachers. One of the most popular ideas is the system of merit pay, which aims to measure the quality of teachers' work and pay teachers according to the results of the measurement.Traditionally speaking, public schools' salaries are based on years that a teacher spends on the job and college credits he or she earned. It is a system supported by unions who suggest treating all teachers equally. Under this situation, the longer a teacher works, the more credits he or she is rewarded, and the higher salary he or she gets. But not all authorities (当局) accept this way to measure teacher's work efforts. Policymakers are now focusing on a relatively more measurable aspect: student test scores. In many districts, authorities are carrying out systems that can track student scores back to the teachers who have taught them. Based on the scores, the authorities may determine the bonuses (奖金) given to each teacher and, in some cases, target to help teachers make progress of their teaching quality. According to some researches, offering bonuses to teachers who raise student achievement will improve the overall quality of teaching. More importantly, it can attract more highly qualified talents into the field of education. It's hard to argue against these policies, which are indeed working, but such programs have backfired in some states. As far as I'm concerned, a more promising way is to combine the system of merit pay with more opportunities for professional training and exchange of experience for both the talent and novice (新手) teachers.1.The best title for the passage is ______.A.National Public EducationB.Public School SalariesC.Ways to Reward Good TeachersD.Professional Training答案:C2.The traditional system is supported by unions because they think _______.A.teachers can be treated equally in this wayB.teachers are rewarded and paid as individualsC.it is focused on credits instead of test scoresD.its measurement is reasonable and acceptable答案:A3.In devised systems, test scores are traced back to teachers in order to _____.pare them with their advantages and shortcomingsB.measure their competence and help them make progressC.share their experience and raise student achievementD.give each teacher an equal chance to being rewarded答案:B4.The sentence “… such programs have already backfired in some states (paragraph 3)” shows that the programs____.A.are supported by the nationB.have reached its goalsC.are not worth tryingD.have some disadvantages答案:D5.The author's attitude towards merit pay is _______.A.favorableC.confusedD.neutral答案:BRegular child care provided outside home or by someone other than the mother does not in itself undermine healthy emotional connections between mothers and their 15-month-old infants, according to a long-term national study. The finding holds even if care begins during the first 3 months after birth and runs for 30 hours or more per week.Among infants who receive unkind and unresponsive care from their mothers, however, the mother-child relationship may be damaged. "This research helps us put apart complexities regarding child care that have not previously been studied in detail," contends Jay Belsky, a psychologist. The investigation consists of 1,153 children and their families living in or near Boston. The youngsters, no more than 1 month old when they entered the study in 1991, will be tracked until the age of 7. Experimenters administered questionnaires to mothers in their homes and videotaped baby caretakers interacting with the kids at ages 1, 6 and 15 months. Independent observers rated the quality of each child care efforts and noted infant nervousness. Unlike most previous studies, this one allows researchers to observe each caretaker's personality at child nursing, and kids' emotional reactions by the equipment.6.From the first paragraph we know that ______.A.mother care is the best according to a national studyB.child care outside home is the best in accordance with the studyC.regular child care outside home does not in itself do harm to mother-child relationshipD.connections between mothers and infants are damaged by outside care答案:C7.According to the passage, unresponsive care from a mother may ______.A.ruin a kid's growthB.harm the mother-child tieC.hurt a baby's emotional reactionD.spoil a child's personality答案:B8.Jay Belsky implies that the study of child care ______.A.was never carried out in the pastB.was not done much in detail in the pastC.was greatly ignored by psychologists and researchersD.was interesting but very difficult to make discovery答案:B9.The main difference between the investigation and the previous ones is that ______.A.the researchers started with only one month old infantsB.the observers could rate the quality of child care efforts and analyzed them soonC.the researchers were able to give the questionnaires to mothers in their homesD.video equipment enabled researchers to observe what was happening directly答案:D10.Which of the following is NOT TRUE of the investigation?A.It will last at least 7 years.B.Cooperation from the mothers is also necessary.C.Some independent observers play a part.D.Researchers paid site visits to see a caretaker's personality and kids' emotional reactions.答案:D二、词汇与语法11.Since I am _____of your plan, tell me every detail, please.A.awareB.worriedD.pleased答案:C12.A businessman should know his buyers not just _______ buyers, but _______people.A.like … likeB.l ike … asC.as … asD.as … like答案:C13.The Law requires that everyone ________ his car checked at least once a year.A.will haveB.hadC.hasD.have答案:D14.It was to the life-boat _______ he owed his life.A.whatB.whichC.thatD.why答案:C15.His answer was so confusing that I could hardly make any ________ of it at all.A.senseB.meaningC.intelligibilityD.interpretation答案:A16.The manager urged his staff not to _________ the splendid opportunity.A.dropB.escapeC.missD.slide答案:C17.The girl will get _______ her nervousness once she is on stage.A.overB.throughC.offD.away答案:A18.You have only 1000 words in which to ______ his speech.A.amount toB.sum upC.lead toD.take up答案:B19.Since there is not much time left, I'll tell you about it _______.A.in detailB.in briefC.at lengthD.in all答案:B20.This book discusses the most recent events of space travel, it certainly is ____.B.up to this momentC.up to this pointD.up to date答案:D三、完型填空Why are children so different in their response __21__ the same situation? Women—and their body parts—sell everything from food to cars. Popular film and television actresses are becoming younger, taller and thinner. Some have even been known to faint on the set from lack of food. Women’s magazines are full of articles urging that if they can just lose those last twenty pounds, they’ll have it all—the perfect marriage, loving children, great sex, and a rewarding career.B Why are standards of beauty being imposed on women, the majority of whom are naturally larger and more mature than any of the models? The roots, some analysts say,are economic. By presenting an ideal difficult to achieve and maintain, the cosmetic and diet product industries are assured of growth and profits. And it’s no accident that youth is increasingly promoted, along with thinness, as an essential criterion of beauty. If not all women need to lose weight, for sure they’re all aging, says the Quebec Action Network for Women’s Health in its 2001 report. And, according to the industry, age is a disaster that needs to be dealt with.C The stakes are huge. On the one hand, women who are insecure about their bodies are more likely to buy beauty products, new clothes, and diet aids. It is estimated that the diet industry alone is worth anywhere between 40 to 100 billion (U.S.) a year selling temporary weight loss (90% to 95% of dieters regain the lost weight). On the other hand, research indicates that exposure to images of thin, young, air-brushed female bodies is linked to depression, loss of self-esteem and the development of unhealthy eating habits in women and girls.D The American research group Anorexia Nervosa & Related Eating Disorders, Inc. says that one out of every four college-aged women uses unhealthy methods of weight control—including fasting, skipping meals, excessive exercise, laxative (泻药)abuse, and self-induced vomiting. The pressure to be thin is also affecting young girls: the Canadian Women’s Health Network warns that weight control measures are now being taken by girls as young as 5 and 6. American statistics are similar. Several studies, such as one conducted by Marika Tiggemann and Levina Clark in 2006 titled “Appearance Culture in 9- to 12-Year-Old Girls: Media and Peer Influences on Body Dissatisfaction,”indicate that nearly half of all preadolescent girls wish to be thinner, and as a result have engaged in a diet or are aware of the concept of dieting. In 2003, Teen magazine reported that 35 percent of girls 6 to 12 years old have been on at least one diet, and that 50 to 70 percent of normal weight girls believe they are overweight. Overall research indicates that 90% of women are dissatisfied with their appearance in some way. Media activist Jean Kilbourne concludes that, “Women are sold to the diet industry by the magazines we read and the television programs we watch, almost all of which make us feel anxious about our weight.”E Perhaps the most disturbing is the fact that media images of female beauty are unattainable for all but a very small number of women. Researchers generating a computer model of a woman with Barbie-doll proportions, for example, found that her back would be too weak to support the weight of her upper body, and her body would be too narrow to contain more than half a liver and a few centimeters of bowel. A real woman built that way would suffer from chronic diarrhea (慢性腹泻)and eventually die from malnutrition. Jill Barad, President of Mattel (which manufactures Barbie), estimated that 99% of girls aged 3 to 10 years old own at least one Barbie doll. Still, the number of real life women and girls who seek a similarly underweight body is epidemic, and they can suffer equally devastating health consequences. In 2006 it was estimated that up to 450, 000 Canadian women were affected by an eating disorder.F Researchers report that women’s magazines have ten and one-half times more ads and articles promoting weight loss than men’s magazines do, and over three-quarters of the covers of women’s magazines include at least one message about how to change a woman’s bodily appearance—by diet, exercise or cosmetic surgery.Television and movies reinforce the importance of a thin body as a measure of a woman’s worth. Canadian researcher Gregory Fouts reports that over three-quarters of the female characters in TV situation comedies are underweight, and only one in twenty are above average in size. Heavier actresses tend to receive negative comments from male characters about their bodies (“How about wearing a sack?,,),and 80 percent of these negative comments are followed by canned audience laughter.G There have been efforts in the magazine industry to buck (抵制,反抗)the trend. For several years the Quebec magazine Coup de Pouce has consistently included full-sized women in their fashion pages and Chatelaine has pledged not to touch up photos and not to include models less than 25 years of age. In Madrid, one of the world’s biggest fashion capitals, ultra-thin models were banned from the runway in 2006. Furthermore Spain has recently undergone a project with the aim to standardize clothing sizes through using a unique process in which a laser beam is used to measure real life women’s bodies in order to find the most true to life measurement.H Another issue is the representation of ethnically diverse women in the media. A 2008 study conducted by Juanita Covert and Travis Dixon titled “A Changing View: Representation and Effects of the Portrayal of Women of Color in Mainstream Women’s Magazines”found that although there was an increase in the representation of women of colour, overall white women were overrepresented in mainstream women’s magazines from 1999 to 2004.I The barrage of messages about thinness, dieting and beauty tells“ordinary”women that they are always in need of adjustment—and that the female body is an object to be perfected. Jean Kilbourne argues that the overwhelming presence of media images of painfully thin women means that real women’s bodies have become invisible in the mass media. The real tragedy, Kilbourne concludes, is that many women internalize these stereotypes, and judge themselves by the beauty industry’s standards. Women learn to compare themselves to other women, and to compete with them for male attention. This focus on beauty and desirability “effectively destroys any awareness and action that might help to change that climate.”D11. A report in Teen magazine showed that 50% to 70% girls with normal weight think that they need to lose weight.H12. On the whole, for 6 years white women had been occupying much more space in mainstream women’s magazines since 1999.C13. Some negative effects such as depression and unhealthy eating habits in females are related to their being exposed to images of thin and young female bodies.B14. The mass media has helped boost the cosmetic and the diet industries.F15. It is reported that there is at least one message about the methods for women to change their bodily appearance on more than three-quarters of the covers of women’s magazines.A16. Some film and television actresses even faint on the scene due to eating too little.I17. Too much concern with appearance makes it impossible to change such abnormal trend.E18. Researchers found that a real woman with Barbie-doll proportions would eventually die from malnutrition.G19. The Quebec magazine Coup de Pouce resists the trend by consistently including full-sized women in their fashion pages for several years.B20. According to some analysts, the fundamental reason of imposing standards of beauty on women is economic profits.Section CDirections: There are 2 passages in this part. In 1985, Regent Beryl Milburn produced a report blasting the University of Texas System administration for not encouraging women. The University was rated among the lowest for the system. In a 1987 update, Milburn commended the progress that was made and called for even more improvement. One of the positive results from her study was a System-wide program to inform women of available administrative jobs.College of Communication Associate Dean Patrica Witherspoon, said it is important that woman be flexible when it comes to relocating if they want to rise in the ranks. During their lifetime, it can be expected that of these 3000 about 23 will be murdered, 30 will die in traffic accidents, and nearly 750 will be killed by a smoking-related disease. The number of deaths attributed to cigarette smoking outweighs all other factors, whether voluntary or involuntary, as a cause of death.Since the late 1970s, when daily smoking among high school seniors reached 30 percent, smoking rates among youth have declined. While the decline is impressive, several important issues must be raised.First, in the past several years, smoking rates among youth have declined very little. Second, in the late 1970s, smoking among male high school seniors exceeded that among female by nearly 10 percent. The statistic is reversing. Third, several recent studies have indicate high school dropouts have excessively high smoking rates, as much as 75 percent .Finally, though significant declines in adolescent smoking have occurred in the past decade, no definite reasons for the decline exist. Within this context, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) began its current effort to determine the most effective measures to reduce smoking levels among youth.26. According to the author, the deaths among youth are mainly caused by _____.A) traffic accidentsB) smoking-related diseaseC) murderD) all of these27. 大学英语A2一、阅读理解1、The earliest settlers came to the North American continent to establish colonies which were free from the controls that existed in European societies. They wanted to escape the controls by kings, governments, priests, churches, and noblemen. To a great extent, they succeeded. In 1776 the British colonial settlers declared their independence from England and established a new nation, the United Stated of America. In so doing, they overthrew the king of England and declared that the power to govern would lie in the hands of the people. They were now free from the power of kings. In 1787, when they wrote the Constitutions for their new nation, they separated church and state so that there would never be a government-supported church. This greatly limited the power of the church. Also, in writing the Constitution they expressly forbade titles of nobility to ensure that an aristocratic society would not develop. There would be no ruling class of noblemen in the new nation. The historic decisions made by those first settlers have had a profound effect on the shaping of the American character. By limiting the power of the government and the churches and eliminating a formal aristocracy, they created a climate of freedom where the emphasis was on the individual. The United States came to be associated in their minds with the concept of individual freedom. This is probably the most basic of all the American values. Scholars and outside observers often call this value''individualism,''but many Americans use the word ''freedom'' Perhaps the word ''freedom'' is one of the most respected popular words in the United States today.(1)、The colonial settlers in North America .A:had hoped to completely get rid of the controls from EuropeB:were completely out of the controls from Europe at the very beginningC:were never under the controls from Europe in the course of building the coloniesD:were partly successful after 1776答案:A(2)、In 1776 the British colonial settlers .A:killed the king of England and set up a new countryB:declared their independence from all the kings and governments in EuropeC:overthrew the rule of England and declared their independenceD:separated church from state答案:C(3)、After the establishment of the United States of America .A:the British colonial settlers become the upper classB:American people became the real master of their countryC:the church was highly supported by the governmentD:the power of church was increased答案:B(4)、Which of the following was one of the historic decisions that influenced a lot the shaping of the American character of individualism?A:the separation of church and state.B:the development of an aristocratic society.C:the freedom of the government.D:overthrowing the king of England.答案:A(5)、A climate of freedom was formed after .A:Americans began to use the word "freedom"B:scholars and observers began to use the term "individualism"C:the Constitutions was written in which the power of the government and the church was limited and the ruling class was eliminatedD:the earliest settlers came to the North America答案:C2、During the meal, you'd better be careful not to leave a spoon in a soup bowl or coffee cup or any other dish. The coffee spoon ought to be on the saucer, the soup spoon ought to be on the plate under the bowl. When you are having soup, make the least noises and use the side of your spoon inside out this way, not the tip. And you mustn't pick up your soup bowls so as to drink away the last drops of your soup from the bottom of the bowl.Very often there is only one main course and salad, followed by your sweet. If you find the meal not enough, say "Oh, it's delicious!" and ask for some more of the chicken or steak or whatever you have just had. The hostess will be very glad that you appreciate her cooking and will give you an extra portion. But if you observe the Chinese way of being polite and say "No, thank you" when the hostess offers you more, you will most probably starve later, because Americans will never press food on you. Yet it is not polite to keep silent and not to talk with the person next to you. It would be considered good manners if you handle your silverware with care so that they don't make any noise. When coffee comes, drink it from your cup. The coffee spoon should rest on the saucer while you are drinking. And smoking, of course, is rarely seen at a dinner table. Well, when the meal is finished, the guests put their napkins on the table and stand up, the men again helping the ladies with their chairs. After the dinner, the guests usually stay for an hour or two, then they would say, "Well, I'm afraid I must be going now." The host and hostess would of course urge everyone to stay longer. "What, already? Won't you have another coffee?" The guests, for instance, would say, "I'd love to, but I haveto be up early tomorrow morning. Thank you for a most enjoyable evening. Good-night."And if you stay overnight or over the weekend, it will be courteous to send a thank-you note to the host or hostess the following day, very often with a small gift such as a box of chocolate or some flowers as a token of appreciation of their hospitality.(1)、Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A:How to Prepare for a Meal.B:Never Press Food on Your Guest.C:Table Manners in the U.S.A.D:How to Enjoy a Dinner.答案:C(2)、The passage suggests that ______.A:to make the hostess happy you should ask for more food even if you are fullB:you should keep silent at a dinner table in order to be politeC:if you want to be friendly with the person next to you, you should press food on himD:talking is necessary at a dinner table答案:D(3)、At a dinner table, you do all of the following except ______.A:making the least noise possibleB:picking up your soup bowl to drink away the last dropC:handling your silverware with careD:drinking the coffee from your cup答案:B(4)、What does "courteous" in the last paragraph mean?A:Friendly.B:GenerousC:PoliteD:Noble.答案:C(5)、The passage implies that ______.A:different nations have different customsB:Chinese customs are quite similar to American onesC:both Chinese and Americans have soup before the main courseD:if you are polite, the hostess will press more food on you答案: A二、词汇与语法1、He had a ________ escape from the gas explosion.A:slightB:smallC:thinD:narrow答案:D2、Henry and Bady _____to the parties at the Trade Union every Saturday.A:are used to goB:use to goC:used to goD:were used to go答案:C3、Unable to speak a word of the local language, he had to _____ with the villagers with gestures.
