Levon Biss was looking at insects from his garden through a microscope he bought for his son. For fun, they unintentionally placed an insect under the lens (镜片). “It is amazingly beautiful!” they both screamed.
The father had been making a career taking photographs for advertisements. But that experience gave him a new direction. Around the world, insect populations are in decline because of habitat loss and climate change. Biss thought that if people could see what he saw through his son’s microscope, they would care more about protecting insects.
So Biss turned to macrophotography: taking close-up pictures of small things, like flowers or bugs. His work has attracted attention not just for its unusual beauty. It also raises awareness about the need for conservation.
In 2016, Biss showed his first insect project, Microsculpture. The term refers to the features of an insect’s exoskeleton, or outer shell, which develops overtime as the bug adapts to its environment. Biss’s pictures capture the insects in a ll their microscopic details. Then he blows up the images until the insects become larger than life, some of them eight feet tall. But each image takes weeks to make. He uses a digital camera with a microscope lens. The camera is fixed on a computerized track, which allows Biss to take a shot, then move the camera by seven microns (微米)— a distance equals to about 1/10 the thickness of a human hair— for the next shot. In the end, Biss might take 10, 000 shots of a bug. A computer combines these small pictures into a single image.
Biss’s latest exhibition is Extinct and Endangered at the American Museum of Natural History. He selected bugs that were extinct or endangered, hoping his photographs would serve as a better purpose. “I communicate visually,” he says, “The way I work is through pictures. Use food to ease your moods? The time of meals may have an impact on moods, including levels of depression and anxiety, accor ding to researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
To conduct the study, 19 participants (12 men and 7 women) were arranged to experience a Forced Process in a dark room for four 28-hour “days”. Participants were assigned to one of two meal timing groups: the Daytime and Nighttime Meal Control Group, which had meals according to a 28-hour cycle (resulting in eating both during the night and day, which is typical among night workers), and the Daytime Only Meal Group, which had meals on a 24-hour cycle (resulting in eating only during the day). The team then assessed depression and anxiety like mood levels every hour.
The result showed that meal timing significantly affected the participants’ mood levels. During the simulated (模拟的) night shift (day 4), those in the Daytime and Nighttime Meal Control Group had increased depression and anxiety like mood levels, compared to the baseline(day 1). In contrast, there were no changes in mood in the Daytime Only Meal Group. Participants with a greater degree of circadian(昼夜节律的) disorder experienced more depression and anxiety like moods. Researchers discovered that among individuals in the daytime and nighttime eating groups, anxiety and depression rose by 16% and 26% individually. A famous author Sarah Chellappa, who completed work on this project, said, “Meal timing is emerging as an important aspect of nutrition that may influence physical health, but the causal role of the timing of food intake in affecting mental health remains to be tested. Future studies are required to establish if changes in meal timing can lead individuals to experience anxiety-related disorders.”
The findings open the door for studying a behavioral strategy that might benefit individuals suffering from mental health disorders, such as shift workers. The study also adds to a growing body of evidence finding that strategies that improve sleep and circadian patterns may help promote mental health.

In the future, environmentally responsible travelers might be sunbathing on green instead of white sand beaches, which help remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Erica Jamieson reports.
Green sand beaches made of volcanic minerals named olivine (橄榄石), may speed up a naturally occurring carbon capture process, which could slow global climate change. It may sound like science fiction. However, Project Vesta, the nonprofit behind the olivine beach programme, will soon start a pilot project to demonstrate this in the Caribbean. As it plans, olivine will be mined from nearby river beds, processed into sand and spread over beaches. It estimates that olivine sand would need to cover just 2 percent of global shelf seas to capture 100 percent of annual human carbon emissions (排放物).
Early funders including Stripe, the credit card processing company, and other private donors, work together to raise US $1. 5 million for further experiments. In the long term, Project Vesta plans to use greensand beaches to help entire nations reach carbon neutrality (碳中和), on a global basis.
“Reducing emissions is not enough to solve the climate crisis,” stated Project Vesta co-founder, Eric Matzner. “We need a solution that removes tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year. Once we manage to prove our approach through studies, we will carry it out worldwide.”
Some critics have raised concerns that increased levels of olivine on beaches could release heavy metal into the water. The upcoming research will closely monitor metal content in the water, sand and other related areas, to measure this effect.
Others argue that if successful, green sand could be an effective alternative to planting forests, which has recently been criticized for “doing more harm than good”. One study has shown that planting trees can reduce biodiversity on the Earth with little impact on carbon emissions.
