Five years ago, we cut nearly every single tree across 19 acres here, piled and burned the branches and left the trunks where they lay. The goal was to restore one of the Ozarks’ rarest ecosystems, a type of dry and rocky grassland.

Logging down trees to bring back grass may seem puzzling in a time of climate change, as forest conservation and tree planting have become popular ways to keep carbon out of the atmosphere. But it is exactly what we should do in some parts of the Southeast. The climate and biodiversity crises a re problems to be solved together. We can’t afford to rob biodiversity to pay for the climate. And grasslands are surprisingly good at pulling carbon out of the atmosphere. A single sunflower might not be the carbon grab that an oak tree is, but grass’s de ep root systems store the element deep underground, where it can take hundreds or thousands of years to return to the atmosphere.

For the past century, the commonly held belief was that forests once covered most of the region from the Atlantic Ocean to th e Mississippi River. But we now know that’s not true. Much of the Southeast was a string of large and small grassland ecosystems with enormous biodiversity. All of these unique grasslands are under threat, but not all by tree invasion. The few remaining grasslands in Arkansas are being converted to grow rice, Virginia grasslands are being flattened by housing developers, and low-lying coastal grassy plain is facing sea-level rise. Because grasslands are so easily navigated(导航)and settled, they may be the most threatened ecosystems in the world.

And it’s obvious that everywhere, grasslands remain undervalued. Many conservation organizations working in the Southeast are still focused on tree planting and preserving existing forests. The Nature Conservancy’s C umberland Forest Project covers 253, 000 acres of land in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia, part of an effort to store carbon and create continuous habitats for species migration during climate change. In fact, recent laws are beginning to lead us in the right direction.

28. Why were the trees cut down in Ozarks?

A.To take in more carbon.

B.To regain its grassland.

C.To create a new ecosystem.

D.To deal with climate change.

29. What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about?

A.The reasons for grasslands reduction.

B.The purpose of cutting down trees.

C.The changes of ecosystems.

D.The result of tree invasion.

30. What is presented about grasslands in the Southeast?

A.Grasslands are greatly valued.

B.Carbon can be broken down by grasslands.

C.Forests took up more region than grasslands.

D.All the grasslands are not threatened by trees.

31. What might the author continue talking about?

A.The importance of grasslands.

B.The influence of planting trees.

C.The measures of restoring grasslands.

D.The present situation of the Southeast.

Sound echoing within caves may have also influenced what early humans put on rock walls. Thousands of years ago, early humans adventured deep within a cave, where sound bounced off the walls. Perhaps by either speaking or walking, they generated the sound re-mindful of a hoof. To represent this sound, they drew a hoofed animal.

They would have been using the same skills that facilitated the earlier development of language, theorizes anew study. “Our research suggests t hat the cognitive mechanisms(认知机制)necessary for the development of cave and rock art are likely to be similar to those employed in the expression of the symbolic thinking required for language. ”says Cora Leisure, a linguist at MIT and one of the study’s a uthors.

Whether or not this art would have shaped how language further developed is doubtful. The study’s researchers note that language is thought to have evolved around 100, 000 years ago. And the oldest forms of cave art found date back roughly 40, 000 years. “We could assume that human language. emerged as an abstract symbolic system, while its expression—in the form of cave and rock art, or any other modality—may have appeared very late, "says Vitor Nobrega, a linguist at the University of Sao Paulo and author on the study.

The markings, they suggest, are external representations of internalized thought. “It’s a theory contrary to a belief among archaeologists(考古学家)that language doesn’t fossilize”, says Lesure, adding that their study doesn’t outright say the cave art they looked at equals language, only that the same cognitive functions may have been present.

Archaeologists have theorized early evidence of language can be found in objects like converted bones that may have been used for anything from counting days to taking attendance. But they are still searching for some of the first physical evidence of linguistic capabilities. The sound factor is an important one to consider, but it was not the only explanation for why people made marks in the places they did.

32. Why does the author mention early humans in paragraph 1?

A.To present an idea.

B.To clarify a concept.

C.Ta introduce the topic.

D.To provide background information.

33. What can we know about the cave art according to the new study?

A.It is identical to language.

B.It appeared later than human language.

C.It can further language development.

D.It can help identify when humans began speaking.

34. What is the archaeologists’ attitude to the origin of language?

A.Uncertain.

B.Doubtful.

C.Approving

D.Indifferent.

35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?

A.The Evolution of Ancient Language.

B.A New Study of Ancient Cave Drawing.

How to Boost Your Memory

The brain might be the place where memories are stored, and its memory capacity can be enlarged.

36 Taking steps to improve your lifestyle in the following four areas will help keep your mind sharp.

● 37 Exercise helps with the activity of brain cells and also helps reduce the risk of brain diseases. It also helps brain cells repair themselves and their connections to other brain cells. Memory can improve in both brain-healthy older adults and with mild brain disorder after a 12-week exercise program.

●Getting sugar from fruits and vegetables instead of products with added sugars is healthier for body and brain. Too much sugar restricts blood flow to the brain and can even cause brain illness. The real brain foods are those called the mind diet. 38

●Sleep is critical for memory formation, especially long-term memory formation. That’s because when you’re asleep, the brain, runs the tape of what it recorded during the day, gets rid of information that isn’t rele vant and then stores other information for the long term. 39 The more you can keep a regular sleep schedule, the better off your brain and the rest of you will be.

●Challenging your brain is of great benefit, too. Maybe you’re a crazy bridge player, a c rossword puzzle lover or a regular lecturer. 40 To get the most memory boost out of puzzles or intellectual activities, the key is to keep things fresh and challenging. New and challenging activities help form new pathways in the brain.

Experiences at a Sports Meeting I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. 1won the B Division long jump and was a decent sprinter(短跑运动员). As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meeting, A little too proud, I was so sure I would win a medal that I didn’t make enough preparations.

The Meeting lasted two days. I had no events scheduled for the first day. So I kept myself busy by watching the others compete.

The next day, I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50 meters relay later in the afternoon. I thought I was a pretty good jumper, but as the competition began, I realized I was vastly outclassed. My jump was 3. 65 meters which was not bad for me. Then there was a boy nicknamed the typhoon, who jumped over 4 meters! That was quite an accomplishment for a ten-year-old boy. We finished our jumps, and I came in the fourth place, just missing out on a medal, which I was eagerly longing for.

That was disappointing, but I reminded myself that we still had a chance in the8×50 meters relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg. The race time arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a nervous minute or so, I heard the starter’s gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched holding my breath as my team runners kept up with the others. I saw the baton(接力棒)passed from one runner to another. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in the second place. My turn arrived. I took the baton cleanly and began my run. The air rushed past me as I moved closer to the next runner.

Sharks use it to find their way and it provides them with food and habitat. But as with on-land highways, this superhighway can be dangerous. Overfishing, commercial development and illegal practices are endangering the species. “We’re seeing a continued decline in shark populations. Our goal is to turn that round.” says Rachel Graham, founder of Mar Alliance, a non-profit organization focused on conserving sharks. By monitoring sharks, Mar Alliance can collect important knowledge on the species to help inform conservation and push for political action. But rather than acting in opposition to the local fishing community, MarAlliance enlists their help. “They are the ones who are on the sea every single day,” says Graham, “and they’re the ones who decide the species’ future.” MarAlliance employs up to 60 fishermen across its range, mostly on a project basis, training them to collect data, record and release fish. Not only does this provide an alternative income to fishing communities, making them less dependent on natural resources, but it also teaches them about the benefits of a healthy ocean ecosystem and how to fish sustainably. Among them, Ivan Torres, who used to catch sharks to sell locally as food, has learned how critical they’re to the whole ecosystem, saying he’d never fish sharks any more.

These events occur when single-celled organisms, known as dinoflagellates (甲藻), suddenly give off a kind of light after being disturbed. They’re most common in spring and into summer, especially during years with a combination of good rains and warm weather. Here are a few tips to help you witness bioluminescence: Monitor Social Media The first reports of a bioluminescence event are likely to show up on Instagram and Twitter, which are easily searchable. You can also set up a warning on Google that will round up news coverage. Check With Aquariums Such institutions as the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey might post updates on their websites or social media feeds, especially if bioluminescence is happening locally. 2023-2024学年山东省名校联盟高三上学期期中英语试题

2023-2024学年山东省名校联盟高三上学期期中英语试题 With its grand castle and famous festival, Edinburgh is a tourist attraction. But Scotland’s capital isn’t just a collection of big-ticket sights. Set on a series of extinct volcanoes and blessed with charming antique alleys and grand squares, Edinburgh distinguishes itself with long history and unique tradition. Edinburgh isn’t just worth visiting. It’s worth throwing yourself into. Here’s what you need to know before you dive in. Arriving in Edinburgh Edinburgh’s airport is 13 km away from the city center. Buses (cheaper), trams (quicker when the roads are busy) and taxis (good for door-to-door drop-offs) connect the final station with the city center. If you’re arriving from outside Britain and you’re not a UK citizen, you’ll need to fill out a passenger-location form. Booking in advance can be worth it The earlier you book your accommodation, the better, especially during the festivals. The biggest shows, including the Tattoo, should be booked well in advance too. The world’s biggest arts festival Fringe takes over the city every August. If you’re going, book your accommodation months in advance and be ready to book the biggest shows early too. If you’re n ot, avoid August. Things also get pretty busy around Hogmanay (the run-up to New Year), but the madness is shorter-lived. Autumn, when the days are long and bright and the winds are generally mild, will suit most visitors best. But if you don’t mind a spot of wet weather, come in the colder months, when walking along atmospheric streets with museums and bars. What kind of currency do you need? Scotland has its own banknotes, but English notes are accepted everywhere in Scotland. Card payments are now more c ommon than cash, and they’re the easiest way to pay on public transport too—if you use cash on a bus, you’ll need exact change, or a pass is a good alternative. 1. What does Edinburgh feature as a tour city? A.A variety of unique architecture. B.A series of unnoticed fancy castles. C.A collection of big-ticket attractions. D.A combination of sights and cultures. 2. Which is the best season to experience Fringe? A.Spring. B.Summer. C.Autumn. D.Winter. 3. What kind of payment is preferred on Edinburgh’s public transport? A.Apple pay. B.Card. C.Cheque. D.Cash.

山东省2023-2024学年高三上学期适应性联考(一)英语试题

山东省2023-2024学年高三上学期适应性联考(一)英语试 题 学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、阅读理解 Every drink has a destination that defines it. In turn, these drinks become the local pride and develop their own distinctive personality. As you travel around, you’ll discover how every place has its own style. Mint Tea – Morocco Most Moroccan families have an additional fine tea service only for special occasions and visiting guests. Mint tea is simply hot water with dried peppermint, and much sugar. Be warned: sometimes the tea is so sweet it can make your cheeks hurt. Gahwa – United Arab Emirates Centuries ago, the shepherds of Arabia noticed their goats became very active after chewing coffee berries, and so made their own energy drink out of it, and thus gahwa — Arabic coffee — and the world’s first coffee culture was born. When you’re in the UAE you’ll notice how important gahwa is for socialising, as it’s served at family gatherings, business meetings and even at parliament. Tequila – Mexico Mexico’s hero drink tequila has its roots in adventure, made from the hardy blue agave plant that grows in the red volcanic soils, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you find a worm or moth larvae in your bottle, be sure to send it back, as it’s likely not tequila but its low quality, inferior cousin, mezcal. Rakija – Croatia In the Balkans the locals begin their meals with a glass of the highly potent rakija, which is confidence if ever we’ve seen it. Produced using primarily honey or mistletoe, rakija is both the national drink and usually homemade. Rakija was traditionally used as a medicinal drink. 1.Where are you likely to travel if you enjoy coffee culture? A.Мorocco.B.The UAE.C.Mexico.D.Croatia. 2.What type of drink does Tequila belong to? A.The sweet one.
