【辨析】fairly,quite,rather,very与pretty(相当,很)。

1.从语气上看:这些词语气的轻重可大致描述为(not) →fairly→quite→rather/pretty→very。

2.从用法上看:(1)修饰比较级和副词too(太)时必须用rather,惟一的例外是quite better(身体好)。

(2)修饰动词时要用rather和quite:I quite agree with you.我完全同意你的意见。

/We rather like the book.我们很喜欢这本书。

(3)修饰不可分级的形容词(如right,wrong,ready,full,empty,impossible,alone等),通常只用quite,此时quite并不表示“相当”,而表示“完全”:That’s quite impossible.那完全不可能。

【辨析】fall与drop的区别,见drop。

2.(某人)熟悉的,通晓的:Are you familiar with the rules of football?你熟悉足球规则吗? 3.亲密的,随便的:He’s familiar with his boss.他与他的老板关系很友好。

【说明】若主语为“人”,表示某人熟悉某事物,其后用介词with;若主语为“物”,表示某事物为某人所熟悉,其后用介词to。

比较:We are familiar with the saying.我们熟悉这条格言。

/The saying is familiar to us.这条格言我们熟悉。

family[5fAmEli]n. 1.[C]家庭:The army and the people are of one family.军民一家。

2.[C]家属成员,子女:My family are all well.我全家都好。

3.[C]家族famous[5feimEs] adj.出名的,著名的:He returned to England to find himself famous.他回到英国,发现自己竟出了名。

【说明】表示“因…出名或著称”,其后用介词for,表示“作为…出名或著称”,其后用介词as:This place is famous for its scenery.这个地方以风景出名。

/He is rather famous as a poet.作为一位诗人,他是相当有名的。

fan1[fAn]n.[C](电影、运动等的)迷,热心的爱好者(支持者):football fans足球迷/She was a fan of the Beatles.她是披头士乐迷。
