Imaginative play helps devel op empathy(同情) for others. If children can imagine how it feels to be left out of a game or to lose a pet, they are better able to help those in need. Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the possibility that phones, po wer lines and wifi could be responsible for a range of illnesses, f rom rashes to brain tumors. Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties. D avid Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the university at Albany, in New York, thinks there's a greater t han 95 percent chance that power lines can cause childhood le ukemia(白血病). Also there's a greater than 90 percent chance that cellphon es can cause brain tumors. “It's apparent now that there's a real risk,” said Carpenter. But others believe these concerns are unjustified. Dr Martha Lin et, the head of radiation epidemiology(流行病学) at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the sameresearch as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion. “I don't support warning labels for cellphones,” said Linet. “We don't have the evidence that there's much danger.”Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs(电磁场) and illness—so weak that it might not exist at all. A multinational investigatio n of cellphones and brain cancer, in 13 countries outside the U S, has been underway for several years. It's funded in part by th e European Union, in part by a cellphone industry group. The fi nal report should come out later this year, but data so far don't s uggest a strong link between cellphone use and cancer risk. 20.From the passage we can learn that some people are worri ed because________.A.they have evidence that the use of cellphones can lead to c ancerB.they make a fuss over cellphone useC.some experts have given a warningD.cellphones are responsible for brain tumors21.By saying “I don't support warning labels for cellphones,”Dr Martha Linet has the idea that________.A.the worrying is unnecessaryB.cancerwarning labels should be on cellphonesC.there is a link between cellphones and cancer D.cellphones have nothing to do with cancer22.The underlined word “underway” is closest in meaning to__ ______.A.started B.kept onC.gone on D.in progress23.Which of the following best describes the attitude of the aut hor towards the debate?A.Optimistic. Even the cheapest holidays require travel and other additional costs that are difficult for many families to meet. For working parents, the long summer break can be a very difficult problem for childc are. When an annual leave allowance amounts to only five wee ks,there is a need to spread this across the year.Couples can find themselves taking leave in turn in order to care for children who are on holiday. For some, this makes even an affordable family holiday difficult. The schools that I visit in Nottingham are full of experienced sta ff committed to giving our children a caring and inspiring learnin g environment. The number of children receiving free school me als is quite large in Nottingham and many schools have breakfa st clubs to make sure that children get a healthy start to the day . Most schools undertake programs of group or individual educa tional support. Schools also have an important role in safeguard ing children's welfare through the ongoing touch and support wit h their pupils. During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed. While teachers are holidaying in the UK,many of their pupils spend the whole six weeks on the street wh ere they live. The lack of free school meals for six weeks can re sult in pressure on a family budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children to continue their learnin g.In setting out its plans for a fiveterm year,Nottingham City Council(委员会)is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down to four and a half weeks, with a more balanced five terms of roughly eight we eks, each followed by a twoweek break. We believe this will give real “down time” for school staff and pupils alike but will be sho rt enough not to cause a real break in learning. We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some sch ool staff, particularly whose own children are educated in other authoritie s. However, this must be weighed against the benefits for city c hildren for whom we all have the greatest duty of care. 36.The passage is probably written by ________.A.an experienced teacher B.a working parentC.an inspired student D.a city council member37.The underlined word “they” in the second paragraph refers to “________”.A.environments B.holidaysC.wages D.benefits38.It is suggested in the passage that the summer break be re duced to ________.A.2 weeks B.4.5 weeksC.5 weeks D.6 weeks39.The plans for a shorter summer holiday will help students _ _______.A.obtain the cheapest holidays without additional costs B.get a chance to spend six weeks a term with teachers in sc hoolC.benefit more from the caring and inspiring learning environ mentD.have more school days to receive free school meals40.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A.working parents can enjoy a fiveweek break to care for their childrenB.the suggested plans for a fiveterm school year can hardly b e carried outC.the long summer holiday gives teachers and students real “down time”D.some school staff will say “No” to the plans for a shorter su mmer holidayⅣ.短文填词My uncle will never forget what happened to him yesterday. Recently I was visited by a very good friend who had just returned from a long walk in the woods, and I asked her what she had observed. “Nothing in particular,”she replied. But for long I have been accustomed to such responses, and become convinced that the_seeing_see_little.How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I—who cannot see, find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch. I feel the delicate symmetry(对称) of a leaf. I pass my hands lovingly about the smooth skin of a silver birch(银桦树), or the rough bark of a pine. In spring I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud, the first sign of awakening nature after her winter's sleep. I feel the delightful, smooth texture of a flower, and discover its remarkable swirl(旋动); and something of the miracleof nature is revealed to me. Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently in a small tree and feel the happiness of a bird in full song. I am delighted to have cool waters of a stream rush through my open fingers. To me a rich carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug(波斯毛毯). To me the circle of seasons is a thrilling and unending drama, the action of which streams through my finger tips. At times my heart cries out with longing to see all these things. If I can get so much pleasure from mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight. Yet, those who have eyes apparently see little. The whole picture of color and action filling the world is taken for granted. It is human, perhaps, to appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we have not, but it is a great pity that in the world of light, the gift of sight is used only as mere convenience rather than as a means of adding fullness to life.36.What does the author imply by the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?A.If one is always using his eyes, he would have poor eyesight.B.The sighted people sometimes fail to discover beautiful things.C.The blind people see no less than the sighted ones.D.When one tries to see, he always sees nothing.37.Which of the following is NOT an example given to show how the nature interests the author?A.The delicate symmetry (对称) of a leaf.B.The delightful, smooth texture of a flower.C.The happiness of a bird in full song.D.The most luxurious Persian rug.38.What does the author think is the reason why sighted people fail to discover the beauty of nature?A.That they long for that which they have not.B.That what they have is usually taken for granted.C.That the gift of sight is a means of adding fullness to life.D.That mere touch is the best way to discover and feel.39.What is the passage mainly about?A.It tries to prove that the seeing see little.B.It describes how wonderful the nature is.C.It tells people to protect their eyesight.D.It expresses some thoughts on feeling beauty and sight.课时作业(一)Ⅰ.1.A of much experience“有很多经验的”,a lot of interesting experiences意为“很多有趣的经历”。

Word had gone round during the day that old Major, the prize Middle White pig, had had a st range dream on the previous night and wished to communicate it to the other animals. It had been agreed that they should all m eet in the big barn(谷仓) as soon as Mr.Jones was safely out of the way.At one end of the big barn, Major lay on his bed of straw comfor tably. He was twelve years old and had lately grown rather hea vy, but he was still a nicelooking pig, with a wise and easygoing appearance. Before long the other animals began to arrive and make themselves comfortable after their different fashions. Firs t came the three dogs, Bluebell, Jessie, and Pincher, and then t he pigs, who settled down in the straw immediately beside Majo r. The two carthorses, Boxer and Clover, came in together, walk ing very slowly and setting down their vast hairy hoofs(蹄子) with great care for fear that there should be some small ani mals hidden in the straw. Clover was a motherly big horse appr oaching middle life, who had never quite got her figure back after her fourth kid.Boxer was an enormous beast, nearly eighteen hands high, an d as strong as any two ordinary horses put together. A white stri pe down his nose gave him a somewhat stupid appearance, an d in fact he was not of firstrate intelligence, but he was well resp ected for his steadiness of character and extraordinary abilities. After the horses came Benjamin, the donkey, Benjamin got an gry easily. He seldom talked, and when he did, it was usually to make all such remarks—for instance, he would say that God had given him a tail to keep the flies off, but that he would rather have had no tail and no fli es. Or how hard it is to be among people laughing and not laugh yourself? Well, apparently it's because we have mirror neurons(神经元)in our brains.Put simply, the existence of mirror neurons suggests that every time we see someone else do something, our brains imitate(模仿)it, whether or not we actually perform the same action. This explains a great deal about how we learn to smile, talk, walk, da nce or play sports. But the idea goes further: mirror neurons notonly appear to explain physical actions, they also tell us that th ere is a biological basis for the way we understand other people .Mirror neurons can undoubtedly be found all over our brains, bu t especially in the areas which relate to our ability to use langua ges, and to understand how other people feel. Researchers hav e found that mirror neurons relate strongly to language. A group of researchers discovered that if they gave people sentences t o listen to(for example:“The hand took hold of the ball”), the same mirror neurons were triggered as when the action was actually performed(in this exa mple, actually taking hold of a ball).Any problems with mirror neurons may well result in problems with behavior. Much research suggests that people with social and behavioral problems have mirror neurons which are not full y functioning. However, it is not yet known exactly how these di scoveries might help find treatments for social disorders. Research into mirror neurons seems to provide us with ever mo re information concerning how humans behave and interact(互动).Indeed, it may turn out to be the equivalent(相等物)for neuroscience of what Einstein's theory of relativity was fo r physics. And the next time you feel the urge to cough in the ci nema when someone else does—well, perhaps you'll understand why.20.Mirror neurons can explain ________.A.why we cry when we are hurtB.why we cough when we suffer from a coldC.why we smile when we see someone else smileD.why we yawn when we see someone else stay up late 21.The underlined word “triggered” in the third paragraph prob ably means “________”.A.set off B.cut offC.built up D.broken up22.We can learn from the passage that mirror neurons ______ __.A.relate to human behavior and interactionB.control human physical actions and feelingsC.result in bad behavior and social disordersD.determine our knowledge and language abilities23.What is the passage mainly about?A.Ways to find mirror neurons.B.Problems of mirror neurons.C.Existence of mirror neurons.D.Functions of mirror neurons.Ⅲ.短文填词Most Americans don't like to get advice from members of their f amily.
