Other times I'll see neighbors out washing their cars or walking their dogs. I make sure to wave and call out "Good morning!" which makes me feel like part of the community.We pass by Mr. Wilson's house and I stare at his crazy yard decorations like I do every day. He must be a really big fan of flamingos because he has a whole flock of pink plastic ones all over his lawn! My dad chuckles and says he went a little overboard again. Next is Mrs. McDonald's cupcake shop. She always has the most beautiful cupcake displays in the window and I press my face against the glass to see what new designs she's put out. They look so perfect and delicious that I'm pretty sure she must be a cupcake wizard.The smells start changing as we approach the main street and walk by Jack's Diner. The greasy diner aromas make my stomach rumble again even though I just ate a huge breakfast. We wait for a bit at the crosswalk, watching the cars go by. Finally, the green "WALK" symbol lights up and we safely cross.On the opposite corner is the community garden where people can grow their own fruits and veggies. I spot my friend Jacob's dad wearing his big floppy gardening hat as he tends to his tomato plants. "Hi Jacob's dad!" I holler and he looks up with a smile and wave.We only have a couple blocks to go from there and my school comes into view. I get a burst of excitement seeing the big brick building with its playground out front. That's when I know my journey is almost over. My parents give me a hug and I scurry through the gates to join my little group of friends waiting out front."Hey guys, what's up?" I say, greeting them with our special triple-handshake. My name is Timmy and I'm in the 4th grade. Today I'm going to tell you all about how I get to school each day. It's kind of a long trip, but I don't mind because there's lots of cool things to see and do along the way!It all starts at 7:00 am when my mom comes into my bedroom to wake me up. "Rise and shine, Timmy!" she'll say in a singsong voice as she opens the curtains. The bright morning sunlight floods into my room, which is the signal for me to kick off my Star Wars blankets and hop out of bed.Once I'm up, I head to the bathroom to take a shower and brush my teeth. After I've gotten all cleaned up, I go back to my room and get dressed for the day. I always pick out my favorite outfits, like my t-shirt with a rocket ship on it or my jeans with the cool rips in the knees.By 7:30, I'm all ready to go downstairs for breakfast. My dad is usually there, drinking his coffee and reading the newspaper at the kitchen table. My mom makes me either pancakes or eggs and sausage. My favorite is the chocolate chip pancakes!After breakfast, it's time to get my backpack and lunchbox ready. I make sure to pack all my school supplies - pencils, erasers, crayons, folders, and notebooks. And in my lunchbox I'll have things like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, an apple, some carrot sticks, and a juice box. Can't forget my snack for recess too, usually a bag of pretzels or graham crackers.Around 8:00 am, my dad gives me a kiss on the head and says "Have a great day, champ!" Then my mom and I head out the front door to begin our journey to school. Our house is about 2 miles from my elementary school, so we have to take a few different modes of transportation to get there.First, we walk about 3 blocks until we get to the bus stop. I like looking at all the houses and gardens along the way.Sometimes I'll see a squirrel or bunny in somebody's yard. We wait at the bus stop until the city bus arrives around 8:15.The bus ride is one of my favorite parts! I go up to the front and pay my 75 cent fare, then I get to pick any seat I want. I usually go for the ones by the window so I can look outside as we drive. During the bus ride, I see lots of tall buildings, cars, traffic lights, and people walking on the sidewalks. I even get to go over a bridge that crosses a river! After about 10-15 minutes, we arrive at the metro station.My mom and I get off the bus and follow the signs to the metro train platform. The metro comes every 5 minutes, so we never have to wait too long. Once a train arrives, we hop on and find seats. The metro is a quick 3 stop ride, which goes partially underground. By the time we get off at our stop, we're just a couple blocks away from my school.Those last few blocks is when I start to see other kids, parents, crossing guards, and school staff. I can tell we're getting close to the school when I can read the bright marquee sign out front that has announcements and the school name on it. We cross at the designated crosswalk where there's a nice crossing guard holding a stop sign to make sure cars let us get across safely.Finally, I arrive at the front doors of Gordon Elementary! I give my mom a hug goodbye and join the stream of kids heading inside. But before I go to class, I always like to stop at my cubby in the hallway to hang up my backpack and lunchbox.And that's my journey to school! A mix of walking, bus, metro train, and a few blocks on foot. It takes a little over a half hour, but it's a fun adventure every morning. I get to see so many cool things on my way. I can see kids on the playground, running around and playing on the swings and jungle gym. The closer we get, the more excited Jake and I become to join them! We pick up our pace until we're practically running through the gates onto the blacktop.Once we've dropped off our backpacks, it's GO time! We sprint out to the playground, desperately trying to get first dibs on the best swing set. No matter how many times we do this, my heart still races with excitement. I love that feeling of freedom as I pump my legs back and forth, soaring higher and higher into the sky.All too soon, the morning bell rings and we have to say goodbye to recess. Jake and I trudge inside, cheeks rosy and breathing heavily from all our running around. I brush and brush until my teeth feel squeaky clean. I have to look my best for school, you know?After that, I head to the kitchen for a super delicious breakfast. My favorite is when my dad makes his world-famous chocolate chip pancakes! They're stacked up taller than me and drizzled with sweet, sticky syrup. My mouth waters just thinking about them!Unfortunately, most mornings it's just a boring bowl of cereal. But at least I get to watch cartoons while I eat. I try to sneak in as many episodes of SpongeBob as I can before the bus comes.Speaking of the bus, that's how I get to school. At exactly 8:15am, I hear the rumbling of the big yellow bus coming down my street. I grab my backpack filled with books, papers, pencils, and my lunch, then race out the door after giving my mom a high five and my dad a hug.I love riding the bus to school! All my best buddies are on there. We play Rock Paper Scissors tournaments, trade snacks,and chat about super important kid stuff. Sometimes we even do homework together, but mostly we just goof around.The bus driver is really nice too. Her name is Ms. Jackson and she always wears these crazy fun printed shirts and big earrings that dangle all the way down to her shoulders. She's super silly and friendly. If you forget something, she'll turn the bus around so you can grab it!After about 20 minutes of cruising through our little town, we finally arrive at Oakwood Elementary. The bus drops us off right at the front gates and we all scramble inside, barely making it before the first bell rings at 8:45am.Once I'm in the hallway, I stop by my locker to grab my books and supplies for my first few classes. My locker is pretty plain since we're not allowed to decorate them too much. Just a few pictures of my family stuck on the inside to make me smile.Then I rush off to homeroom, which is taught by the nicest teacher ever - Mrs. Martin. She's so fun and full of energy in the mornings. She always has a hilarious joke or story ready to wake us up and get us laughing before we start our day.The lessons and classes fly by after that. My favorite parts of the day are art class where I can paint and draw whatever wackyideas come to mind, music class where I play the xylophone, math with all the numbers and problem solving, and of course P.E. when we get to run around and play awesome games.The only bummer of the school day is the loooong lunch period. Don't get me wrong, I love eating. But we have to spend an entire hour in the cafeteria! An hour is like, forever when you're a kid. At least I get to hang out and chat with my besties while we scarf down those delicious rectangle pizzas.Once the final bell rings at 3:15pm, I'm ready to jet out of there! I meet back up with my bus buddies and we climb aboard Ms. Jackson's bus for the ride home. The bus drops me off right on my street again and I practically skip the whole way home.After an awesome day of learning, playing, and seeing my friends, I get to just relax in the afternoon. Maybe play some video games, watch TV, or build an awesome fort out of blankets and pillows.Then it's dinner time with my family, bath time to get all squeaky clean again, and finally into my cozy PJs and bed by8pm.
