He even cut off part of his own ear at one point! Yikes, no wonder his paintings look so wild and tormented.Despite all his troubles, Van Gogh kept on painting prolifically. He created over 2,000 artworks during his short career, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. My favorite Van Gogh paintings are definitely his landscapes with those crazy swirling skies and bright colors. They're like something out of a psychedelic dream!Unfortunately, Van Gogh's life had a really sad ending. The passage states that at the young age of 37, he "died by suicide after years of mental anguish." It talked about them setting up the tent, gathering firewood, cooking meals over the fire, telling stories and roasting marshmallows at night. I'm just a city kid - how am I supposed to know what a "game trail" or "wildflowers" are?After what felt like years, I finally reached the end where John and Emily were packing up to head home. Of course, there were still weird phrases about "striking camp" and "dousing the fire pit". By the time I finished translating the whole thing into Chinese, I was mentally and physically exhausted!That stupid homework assignment took me over 4 hours! The second reason for the voyages was to collect treasures and goods from other lands to bring back tothe Chinese emperor. Silks, spices, and precious gems were very valuable back in those days.What really caught my attention though, was the crazy size of Zheng He's ships and fleet described in the passage. It said his main ship, the treasure ship, could be over 400 feet long! That's like a giant skyscraper laid on its side floating on the water. The passage claimed it was most likely the largest wooden ship ever built in human history. No wonder they called it a "treasure" ship - I bet it held tons of cargo and supplies for those long voyages.But that treasure ship was just one of over 200 ships that made up Zheng He's massive fleet. The passage said it included special ships for water, horses, troops, weapons, and even a ship just for interpreters. With a fleet that enormous, Zheng He must have had a whole village's worth of sailors and crews. I can't even imagine how they managed to navigate and keep all those ships together out on the open ocean.What I found really fascinating though, was that the passage said Zheng He's voyages were much more peaceful than voyages by later European explorers. Instead of conquering territories, the passage explained that Zheng He tried to develop good relationships and ties through trades, ceremonies, and exchanging gifts. He didn't go around claiming lands for Chinaeither. I guess he was more interested in learning about the world and sharing Chinese culture than he was in fighting wars.By the time I finished translating that whole passage, I had a new appreciation for Zheng He and his incredible voyages. The passage really brought the stories of his journeys to life and made me feel like I could picture his huge fleet sailing across those vast stretches of ocean centuries ago. It's amazing to think about how far and wide he traveled with the simple navigation tools and basic wooden ships of that time period.Reading about brave explorers like Zheng He makes me want to dream big and have adventures of my own someday. Though I doubt any of my future adventures will ever come close to being as epic as sailing a giant treasure fleet thousands of miles across the open seas!
