The Only Thing We Have To Fear Is Fear Itself
Franklin Roosevelt was the 32nd President of the United States. He is the only American president elected to more than two terms. He won his first of four president elections in 1932 when the United States was in the depth of the Great Depression. He carried out his New Deal which included Relief, Recovery and Reform. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, destroying or damaging a lot of warships and killing a lot of civilians and soldiers, then he asked Congress to declare war on Japan. He made a lot of contributions to the world during the Great Depression and the World War Two. He gave his country and the world prosperity and stability. The speech was delivered at his inauguration in Washington on March 4 1933and he encouraged Amer ican’s people to fight against and overcome the difficulties they met. His speech won the applause 20 times.
Roosevelt frequently changes sentence structures throughout the speech. He opens his speech with a periodic sentence. He frequently does this to keep the readers’ attention and elaborate before the main idea. By using periodic sentences allows more build up effect for the readers, making the effect more dramatic when the final point is stated. Through his use of periodic, loose, and short sentences he keeps the reader engaged and interested throughout the whole speech, and also makes important facts stand out.
Throughout Roosevelt’s whole speech he only used the punctuation –dash-twice. Using a dash widely stresses what lies inside the dashes. Using the dash adds stress and emphasizes making the effect more heart felt. Along with the use of dash Roosevelt uses other ways to make sentences or words stand out. Roosevelt uses many sentence types: compound, compound-complex, and simple. Throughout his speech, he frequently begins his sentences with prepositional phrases. Roosevelt probably tried to vary his sentence types to keep people interested and a tentative to what he was saying. Be starting many of his sentences with prepositional phrases, this could have been a tool to get readers attention.
Roosevelt delivered a very good speech with the proper organization and diction that a situation of this importance would need. He is constantly grabbing the reader’s attention through he repetition, sentence variation, and punctuation. He keeps them spell bound feeling the pride of their nation. Although he does use a variety of diction types, he does make the article easy to understand especially since he is trying to appeal to all American no matter how smart the may be. Roosevelt's speech had an immediate and long-lasting impact on American politics. Thirty-three minutes after he finished speaking. His speech encouraged a large amount of American citizens to build up their confidence and find ways to overcome the difficulties. Under his influence, his country was recovering step by step.
