This part intends to give readers the purpose and significance of the study,which not only lays stress on the phenomena of thick translation in A Source Book in Chinese Philosophy,but also is geared to foster the acceptance of Chinese philosophy in the world by the application of thick translation strategy.A review on the previous study of Wing-Tsit Chan’s A Source Book in Chinese Philosophy and the thick translation in and out of China is of equal necessity.

1.1.1The Background and Purpose of the Study

Philosophy is a word accepted and respected by scholars all over the world.Chinese Philosophy,though it is a subject among China’s universities,has not been widely recognized and set up in Western universities as well as in Westerners’hearts.“Undoubtedly,the situation of Chinese philosophy has been greatly improved in ESW(English speaking world). However,it is also uncontroversial that Chinese philosophy is still marginalized in philosophical studies in ESW and dismissed by many mainstream philosophers there”(Jiang Xinyan168).Numerous and continuing efforts are paid generation by generation to help Chinese philosophy out of the difficult situation.In1963,A Source Book in Chinese Philosophy was published by Princeton University Press,which can be called the first English book to introduce Chinese philosophy,from pre-Confucianism to medieval period,even the philosophic trends of present-day Communist China.From the conception of preparation for this book till its publication,with generous help from Fellowships,Foundations,Universities, Libraries and unselfish professors and specialists,Chan spent more than two decades to accomplish this magnum opus.“After its publication,it has stood among the authoritative books on Chinese philosophy in Western academic arena;it has also become a compulsory book for Chinese philosophy majors and in Chinese thoughts courses among Western universities”(Chan Wing-Tsit,preface by Huang Junjie8).In Chan’s obituary,Wm. Theodore De Bary said,“his monumental Source Book in Chinese Philosophy(Princeton University Press,1963),a standard work still can not be superseded in this field”(Wm. Theodore De Bary1355).Roger T.Ames made a comment in2004that A Source Book in Chinese Philosophy provided a vital foundation for the development of Chinese philosophy in
