扬子津作为运河渡口自然早已有之，扬子县的得名因此有可能是出于扬子津，然而它自身却久已沉埋，不为人所知晓了。

扬子津原来是个近江面的较低洼处，可是它与南岸从润州入江的运河渡口并不正好相对，嫌偏西了一些，而江中靠北岸处又有沙洲，这就造成了航行上的不便。

《新唐书·齐浣传》：“（浣）迁润州，州北距瓜步沙尾，纡汇六十里，舟多败溺。

浣徒漕路由京口埭，治伊娄渠已达扬子，岁无覆舟，减运钱数十万。

”也就是说，渡江进入北岸的运河不再通过扬子津，而是通过新开的伊娄河到达扬子县。

李白《提瓜州新河饯族叔舍人贲》诗云：“齐公凿新河，万古流不绝。

”指的便是这条河，而瓜洲从此也就取代了扬子津，成为大江北岸运河的著名津渡。

白居易有《长相思》词：“汴水流，泗水流，流到瓜洲古渡头。
