AThe way that people sit in chairs isn't the same.If you're sitting with arms and legs hanging freely,it's probably a sign that you're relaxed and feeling comfortable. If you stay on the edge of the chair with your legs stretched (伸直)before you and your feet crossed,it can signal unconcern. In a country where rules of behavior in court were very strict,a witness sat as described above, with his huge boots placed on top of each other, wearing a big coat and with his arms crossed. The judge said: “Sit up straight and take your coat off,or I'll hold you in contempt (藐视法庭).” The man got his posture straightened out immediately.Someone waiting for a job interview might be seated on the edge of the chair with his or her feet together. If it's a woman she'll probably be hugging her handbag.Body tension (紧张)forces your breathing system and makes you sound short of breath. When you're in such a position it's easy to lose your head and simply run away if things take a turn for the worse. On television it's interesting to watch people on quiz shows like “Who wants to be a millionaire”.You can notice their understandable tension from the way they hold their hands till their knuckles (指关节)turn white and also from their quickened breathing. We don't believe that you can teach people to control their body language completely;they'll lose control at some point or other—when they become too eager or too angry.Take a discussion between politicians, for example. The control is there, even when they get angry but there will be a small muscle by the mouth that is shaking.Cheeks turn red in women who are angry while men's ears often turn red when they are angry.21.In the first example, why did the judge warn the witness?A.The judge was too strict. B.The witness was against the law.C.The judge was only nervous. D.The witness didn't respect the court.22.Which of the following postures show that one is nervous in a job interview?a.Crossing one's arms. b.Sitting with one's feet together.c.Hugging one's handbag. d.Sitting straight.A.a,b B.b,c C.a,c D.b,d23.The last paragraph is mainly to tell us that .A.body language can't be controlled completelyB.your body language may give you awayC.anger has different effects on men and womenD.politicians can completely control their body languageB. Do Animals Communicate? When we think of communication,we normally think of using words—talking face to face, writing messages and so on.But in fact we communicate far more in other ways. Our eyes and facial expressions usually tell the truth even when our words do not. Then there are gestures, often unconscious: raising the eyebrows, rubbing the nose, raising the shoulders, tapping the fingers, nodding and shaking the head. There is also the even more subtle (微妙的)body language of posture: Are you sitting or standing with arms or legs crossed? Is that person standing with hands in pockets, held in front of the body or hidden behind? Even the way we dress and the colors we wear communicate things to others. So,do animals communicate? Not in words, although a parrot might be trained to repeat words and phrases which it doesn't understand. But,as we have learnt, there is more to communicate than words.Take dogs for example. They show their teeth to warn, shake their tails to welcome and stand firm, with hair upright,to fight. These signals are surely the equals of the human body language of facial expressions, gestures and posture.Color can be an important means of communication for animals. Many birds and fishes change color, for example,to attract partners during the mating (交配)season. And mating itself is commonly done after a special dance which both partners take part in.Here, again, there are striking similarities to young men and women who dress up to meet partners at parties, where the music is often too loud for word munication there takes place through appearance and movement. The most carefully planned dances in the animal kingdom are those that bees use to communicate. With body movements alone they can tell other bees the direction and distance of a newly discovered food. All these examples may suggest instinctive (本能的) rather than intelligent communication. But human body language is largely instinctive, too. And,in many ways, body language says far more than intelligent, word communication ever can.24.Nodding and shaking the head is a .A.Gesture B.facial expression C.posture D.language25.Dogs' shaking their tails means .A.Warning B.Welcoming C.Fighting D.laughing26.Bees use body movements to .A.attract partners to communicate B.communicate where they have beenC.tell other bees where to go and how far it is D.show their victoryCWe have all heard the expression: “Remember to stop and smell the roses.” But, how often do we really take time out of our hectic fast-paced lives to notice the world around us?I am as guilty as anyone of tuning out the world in this manner, especially when I am driving on California’s overcrowded streets. A short time ago, however, I witnessed an event that showed me how being wrapped up in my own little world has kept me from being fully aware of the bigger world picture around me.I was driving to a business appointment and, as usual, I was planning in my mind what I was going to say. I came to a very busy crossroads where the stoplight had just turned red. “All right,” I thought to myself, “I can beat the next light if I race ahead of the pack.” My mind and car were in auto pilot, ready to go when suddenly my trance was broken by an unforgettable sight. A young couple, both blind, were walking arm-in-arm across this busy crossroads with cars whizzing by in every direction. The man was holding the hand of a little boy, while the woman was clutching a baby sling to her chest, obviously carrying a child. Each of them had a white cane extended, searching for clues to navigate them across the crossroads.Initially I was moved. They were overcoming what I felt was one of the most feared handicaps —blindness. “Wouldn’t it be terrible to be blind?” I thought. Without realizing the danger they were in, they were walking right the path of oncoming cars. I was frightened for them because I didn’t know if the other drivers understood what was happening. As I watched from the front line of traffic (I had the best seat in the house), I saw a miracle unfold before my eyes. Every car in every direction came to a simultaneous stop. I never heard the s creech of brakes or even the peep of a car horn. Nobody even yelled, “Get out of the way!” Everything froze. In that moment, time seemed to stand still for this family. Amazed, I looked at the cars around me to verify that we were all seeing the same thing, I noticed that everyone’s attention was also fixed on the couple. Never skipping a beat, the couple adjusted their course as they followed the coaching. Trusting their white canes and the calls from some concerned citizens, they made it to the other side of the road. As they arrived at the curb, one thing struck me — they were still arm-in-arm. I was taken aback by the emotionless expressions on their faces and judged that they had no idea what was really going on around them. Yet I immediately sensed the sighs of relief exhaled by everyone stopped at that intersection. As I glanced into the cars around me, the driver on my right was mouthing the words “oh, did you see that?!” The driver to the left of me was saying, “I can’t believe it!” I think all of us were deeply moved by what we had just witnessed. Here were human beings stepping outsidethemselves for a moment to help four people in need.I have reflected back on this situation many times since it happened and have learned several powerful lessons from it. Take time to look around and really see what is going on in front of you right now. Do this and you will realize that this moment is all there is, more importantly, this moment is all that you have to make a difference in life.As I drove away from that busy intersection, I did so with more awareness of life and compassion for others than I had arrived there with. Since then I have made the decision to really see life as I go about my daily activities and use my God-given talents to help others less fortunate.Do yourself a favor as you walk through life: Slow down and take the time to really see. Take a moment to see what is going on around you right now, right where you are. You may be missing something wonderful.27.Which of the following words can be st describe the author’s feelings when seeing the blind cross the street?A. Relieved; Guilty; NervousB.
