Unit 1 Lesson 1 After School(第二课时)Lesson Focus•Verbs•Talking about your afterschool routine•Adverbs of frequency•Words with the sound /a/Exercise 6Purpose: to help students correct the placement of adverbs of frequency ➢Write these sentences from Exercise 4 on the board: 1. My grandparents always watch the evening news on TV.; 2. I often play basketball with my friends.; 3. I usually study my notes first.; 4. They seldom have the time. Diagram the sentences with your students. Point to the first sentence and ask "Which is the subject of the sentence? Who does the action?" Elicit and underline My grandparents. Elicit and underline the subjects for the other sentences: 2. I; 3. I; 4. They. Then ask "What is the verb in the first sentence?" Elicit and circle watch.Elicit and circle the verbs for the other sentences: 2. play; 3. study; 4.have. Ask "What are these words between the subjects and the verbs?"Elicit adverbs of frequency. Point out that adverbs of frequency can e between the subject of the sentence and the verb. Explain that there are some other places where adverbs of frequeney can e in a sentence. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip thisstep.➢Direct students to the Sentence Builder chart. Give students a few moments to look at the sentences. Then read the sentences aloud, saying the adverb of frequeney by itself with the sentence, for example, " Sometimes, we watch TV at home. Usually, we watch TV at home.We always watch TV at home", etc. Then point to the sentences on the board and ask " Which sentence in the Sentence Builder has the adverbs of frequency in the same place as these sentences?" Elicit the second sentence. Then ask " Which adverbs of frequeney can also e at the beginning of the sentence?" Elicit sometimes and usually. Ask "Where else can sometimes and usually e in the sentence?" Elicit at the end.Revise by stating this rule: "Adverbs of frequency can e between the subject of the sentence and the verb. Sometimes and usually can also e at the beginning or end of a sentence" . Direct students to the sentences.Say "Now find the incorrect sentences and correct them". Monitor as your students correct the sentences, offering assistance as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs.➢If time allows, do Workbook page 82, Exercises 2 and 3. Have students e up with as many variants of the sentences as possible, rewriting them with theadverbs of frequency in all possible places. Students should produce the following sentences:2. OR We sometimes watch the evening news.SpeakingExercise 7Purpose: to help students talk about people's daily activities with adverbs of frequency➢Say "My parents often go to the cinema Ask a more proficient student " How often do your parents go to the cinema?" Elicit an appropriate response. Have two students read the Example dialogue aloud.➢Direct students to the pictures and phrases. Say "Talk about the people's daily activities. Use adverbs of frequeney". Have students get into pairs and talk about the people's activities. Monitor and offer assistance as needed. Have a feedback session at the end of the activity. Then havea few students tell the class what their partners said.Expansion: Don't Stop!Note: Use this activity to give students more practice. Encourage students to talk about other people they know, for example, other family members or neighbors, and their daily activities. This can be done in pairs or smallgroups.Exercise 8Purpose:to help students plete and talk about an afterschool activities survey➢Revise the adverbs of frequency. Have individual students write the adverbs on the board in order, from always to never. Then ask a more proficient student " How often do you play sports after school?" Elicit an appropriate response. Encourage the student to answer in a plete sentence, using an adverb of frequency. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.➢Direct students to the survey in Exercise 3. Say "Now do the survey.Answer about yourself". Monitor, offering assistance as needed.➢Say " Now pare your answers". Have students get into pairs or small groups to discuss their surveys. Monitor closely, offering help as needed. As an alternate approach, you may wish to have your students do a mingle, walking around the room, asking the questions in the survey, instead of having students do it individually.➢When students have finished, take a poll of the results of the class and write them on the board. Discuss the results as the class.Expansion : Don't Stop!Activity 1: Note: Use this activity with more proficient students. Encourage students to talk more about the topics in the afterschool activities survey.For example, for question 1 they can talk about the sports they play, the days they play them and their team members. For question 2, they can talk about the clubs they are in, when they meet, etc.Activity 2: As an alternate approach, you may wish to have your students do a mingle, walking around the room, asking the questions in the survey, instead of having students do it individually.Pronunciation: /ə/Exercise 9Purpose: to help students identify words with the /a/ sound➢Say " Listen to the passage. What sound do you hear at the end of most words?" Play the recording the first time, having students just listen.Then ask again " What sound do you hear at the end of most words?"Elicit or provide /ə/ . Go over some words with the /ə/ sound, for example, centre, doctor and after. Ask students to identify the three different spellings, re, er and or, of the /ə/ sound.➢Direct students to the text. Say "Listen to the passage again. plete the words with re, er or or" Play the recording again, monitoring as students plete the words. If necessary, play the recording a third time.➢Go over the answers, having individual students say the words aloud. Raise your hands when you hear the /ə/ sound". Play the recording, raising your hand, along with your students, when the words with the /ə/ sound are heard.➢Say "Now read along with the passage". Play the recording again, having students read aloud. Have students work in pairs or small groups to e up with other words with the /ə/ sound. Make it into a contest. The team with the most correctly spelled words wins.。
