It is just so lucky that the day before it happened, I had been practising first aid. ”The Empowering Parents First Aid course is run by Lancashire Adult Learning. Around the holidays, many families don't consider taking proper measures to prevent their homes from suffering holiday thieves. With just a few simple steps, you can better make sure of the safety of your home during all of the holiday celebrations. Here are a few tips for making it difficult to tell you are away from home.•Either have a trusted neighbour pick up your mail and newspapers, or tell your mailperson to hold your mail until you return. Nothing says “Hey, we are not home!” like when your postbox is filled with all kinds of mails and you have many different newspapers in your driveway.•Set several different lights in your house on random timers (随机定时器). If an outdoor light remains on for days at a time, it means that nobody is home to turn it off.•If you have pets that you are not taking with you on vacation, leave them with a friend, rather than having someone come into your house every day to take care of them. When thieves see a neighbour or friend entering your house every day, they will know you are not home.•Close all your curtains when you leave town. This is effective to deter possible thieves, as no one can see what is in your house. If they don't know what there is to take, then the risk is even greater for them to break in.This article just has suggested a few tips to help you keep your house safe while you are on holiday. Well, make plans to try it now since you are on summer vacation. Not all vacations call for taking a tour bus to take photos of famous landmarks. Some vacations allow you plenty of opportunities to learn. The most difficult aspect of a learning vacation may be choosing one because the possibilities are endless. If you enjoy cooking, various companies can take you to Italy, France, Spain, Mexico or even Peru. Once there, you can learn to prepare the local cuisine (烹饪). Trips are often planned to fit in with local food festivals or special events. The term “learning vacation” often brings language to mind. The best way to learn a language is in an environment where it's spoken. Study Spanish, French or English. Or attempt a more unusual language like Polish, Estonian or Thai. You'll be able to learn about the country and absorb the culture at the same time.If you are fond of sports, you can polish your skills or learn new ones. Golf and tennis schools welcome players of all levels. If you want a bigger thrill, you can learn to surf, go climbing or race cars. It's even possible to learn the art and techniques of bull fighting while on vacation! You can also discover our inner artist. Many places offer painting classes in different mediums. The scenic locations of the schools offer plenty of subjects that provide inspiration for practice. If you prefer capturing the world on film, take a photography vacation. Travel with a small group to photograph beautiful animals or scenery. You can also practise your technique on people or at historical sights.Once you decide on a vacation, choose a company carefully. Request names of recent customers you can contact, and then ask them for an evaluation. The more you know before you go, the better prepared you'll be. Then go out and learn something!29.Why is it hard for you to decide on a learning vacation?A.Because it is hard for you to make plans.B.Because the possibilities are unlimited.C.Because there are many good foods from abroad.D.Because there're too many food festivals or events.30.The advantage of learning a language in its native country is that ________.A.the environment is fit for you to use the languageB.you are able to learn the original foreign languageC.native speakers offer you a lot of chances to practiseD.you can learn the language and experience its culture31.Which of the following sports suits you if you don't like thrills?A.Car racing. B.Playing tennis.C.Rock climbing. D.Surfing.DYou might think I'd have little in common with a camel, but we do share one useful skill:both of us can go for a very long time without water. Usually I start my day with a cup of tea, and then I might have a glass of water with my lunch and one with dinner, that's about a liter of liquid in 24 hours. It feels like plenty, but apparently it's not nearly enough. After years of suffering headaches and poor digestion I spoke to a neurologist about my regular headaches and a nutritionist about my poor digestion, and both told me I should be drinking up to three liters of liquid a day for my body to function at its best. I decided to conduct an experiment. What would happen if I drank the recommended amount every day for a month? The photograph of me taken the day I started this trial demonstrates(展示) perfectly and rather frighteningly what a lack of hydration does to a face. I am 42, but have to admit I look more like 52 in this picture, which is shocking. There are dark shadows under and around my eyes, which make me look exhausted, a profusion of wrinkles and strange reddish blotches, and my skin lacks any luster(光泽). It looks dead. Even my lips look shriveled(枯萎的). This is all classic evidence of poor hydration, apparently.Every system and function in our body depends on water. It flushes toxins from the vital organs, carries nutrients to cells, provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues, and eliminates waste. Not drinking enough means all these functions becomes damaged. So I decided to see how I would look and feel if I drank three liters of water every day for 28 days. The results were astonishing.32.Which statement is Not True according to Paragraph 1?A.The author drinks about a liter of liquid every day.B.The author has something in common with a camel.C.The author thinks she drinks enough water every day.D.The author actually has plenty of water in her daily life.33.Why did the author decide to drink the recommended amount of water?A.Because she was very fond of doing experiments.B.Because she was informed of the importance of drinking enough water.C.Because her doctors forced her to do it.D.Because she wanted to be cured of her stomachache.34.The author's lack of hydration caused the following physical responses Except ________.A.shriveled lipsB.enough luster of her skinC.dark shadows around her eyesD.wrinkles and blotches on her face35.According to the passage, the author most probably tends to tell us ________.A.the more water one drinks, the healthier he isB.drinking water makes ladies look youngerC.drinking enough water is key to one's health.D.it's necessary to follow specialists instructions第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

A cheetah can go from 0 to 96 kilometers per hour in only three long steps. However, with a lean body and small teeth, the cheetah cannot fight larger animals. This makes the small populations of cheetahs even more precious and worthy of protection. The Wildlife Conservation Fund has teamed up with the Central Kalahari Research Group to study and protect the remaining cheetahs. In order to find out more about these animals, two adult cheetahs were fitted with GPS satellite collars. These collars provide information about how cheetahs move through their environment. And they provide an excellent way to study cheetahs which have been released back into the wild.Understanding the cheetah's behavior is an important step for their protection. As much as possible, do not invite clients (客户) or visitors to your home. Light is a natural fright for burglars.•Invest in a security alarm, particularly if your house is located at a remote spot. Avoid keeping house keys in obvious places, such as under the lamp or on top of the doorframe.•Adding an additional lock will provide extra security when you are home. The dead-lock, sometimes called an “exit only deadbolt” is a deadbolt that does not have an external (外部的) key. It is clearly visible on the door from the outside, but cannot be broken into without destroying the door, frame or lock itself. They say that, a hundred years from now, we will have used most of the earth's resources. We will have polluted our seas badly, and be unable to eat fish from them. We will have made the air so dirty that we will need to wear masks. The world's population will have doubled, and we will have used all the countryside for housing; there will be no farmland left.Other people believe that Man adapts very easily. They have a different idea of the future. How, in their views, will people be living in a hundred years' time? One architect believes that Man will move off the land. He suggests that the city of the future will be a huge, pyramid-shaped building, which will be floating on the surface of the sea. About 5,000 families will be living there, and the building will contain shops and schools as well as homes. By living on the sea, we will give the farmers more land to grow crops. As for oil, people will no longer need it: we will be heating our homes with power from the sun. And we will not be short of minerals, because there are plenty under our oceans. At the moment, we do not have the technology to get them out. But, in a hundred years' time, the optimists say, the new sea cities will be using these resources. What will be in the shops in the year 3000? What will people be wearing? How will people be traveling?Scientists who make predictions about the future suggest that, by the year 3000, shops will no longer exist. Computers will have replaces them; and people will order goods from home.People will be wearing very light, thin clothes. By this time, scientists will have invented a fabric that keeps us cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather. As for travel, the experts say that most people will be using public transport. Electric cars will be traveling through the streets day and night. Anybody will be able to stop one and use it.An interesting picture. Unfortunately, we will not be there to see if these predictions come true.29.Pessimists believe that in the future ________.A.the seas and oceans will be full of housesB.we'll have used up all the resourcesC.we will not have enough fish to eat from the seasD.we will have polluted the air so badly that it will be impossible for us to breathe30.Optimists suggest that ________.A.all the land will be too polluted to be cropped onB.pyramids will be the most commonly-used housesC.people will be using the power from the sun instead of oilD.we will be short of materials even though we get them from under the oceans31.Scientists have made the predictions EXCEPT ________.A.electric cars will be going along the streets continuouslyB.the resources under the oceans will never be used upC.people will order from homeD.people won't suffer from cold any longerDToday is National Bike-to-Work Day. And on New York City's jammed streets, people are cycling on hundreds of miles of new bike lanes. But New York's widespread efforts to make streets safer for bikes have also left some locals complaining about the loss of parking spots and lanes for cars. When the weather is good, Aaron Naparstek likes to pedal (用踏板踩) his two young kids to school on a special Dutch-made bicycle. Naparstek supports the new lane.Aaron: The bike lane on Prospect Park West is really introducing a lot of new people to the idea that it's possible to use a bike in New York City for transportation or to travel around. This is what 21st century New York City looks like.Prospect Park West is still a one-way road, but where it used to have three lanes of car traffic, now it has two, plus a protected bike lane. Supporters say that makes the road safer for everyone, including pedestrians, by slowing down cars and taking bikes off the sidewalk. But some longtime residents disagree. Lois Carswell is president of a group called Seniors for Safety. She says the two-way bike lane is dangerous to older residents who are used to one-way traffic.Lois: We wanted a lane—the right kind of lane that would keep everybody safe, that would keep the bikers safe. But we want it to be done the right way. And it has not been done the right way.Craig Palmer builds bars and restaurants in Manhattan. I was interviewing him for a different story when he brought up the bike lanes all on his own.Craig: I think the biggest problem is that Bloomberg put all these bike lanes in. You tookwhat used to be a full street and you're shrinking it.Then there are the Hasidic Jews in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, who forced the city to remove a bike lane through their neighborhood. But polls show that the majority of New Yorkers support bike lanes by a margin of 56% to 39%. Bicycle advocate Caroline Samponaro of Transportation Alternatives calls that a_mandate.Caroline: If this was an election, we would have already had our victory. The public has spoken and they keep speaking. And I think, more importantly, the public is starting to vote with their pedals.32.What does Aaron mean by saying “This is what 21st century New York City looks like.”?A.There are hundreds of miles of new bike lanes in 21st century New York City.B.Drivers slow down their cars and bikes are taken off the sidewalk in New York.C.Bikes are used as a means of transport in 21st century New York City.D.It's possible to make the streets safe for pedestrians in New York.33.According to the passage, which of the following cannot support the opponents of these new bike lanes?A.Drivers lose parking spots and lanes for cars.B.The two-way bike lane is dangerous to older residents.C.We took what used to be a full street so the road is broader than before.D.The removal of one bike lane through a neighbourhood in Brooklyn was not supported by the majority of New Yorkers.34.“A mandate” in Paragraph 8 was referred to a demand or command from ________.A.the authority B.the publicC.the supporters D.the government35.What of the following might be the best title of the passage?A.Ride on National Bike-to-Work DayB.A New Bike Lane Appears in New YorkC.A Bike Lane Divides New YorkersD.Who Wins an Election第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

But thanks to her newly acquired skills, Sonya saved Tilly's life.Sonya said, “Tilly was playing with her brother and they were fighting over a toy. Emmen won the fight. Tilly fell backwards and her head was hit. She was face down and shaking and at first I thought she was upset. But then I saw she was blue in the face and had stopped breathing. Don't leave your outdoor lights on all the time. Instead, put your outside lights on timers to be on during the nights.

Only a targeted area of leaves is removed from the lower part of the vines to help the grapes grow better. But at the Featherstone Winery, no man or machine does the cutting. Instead, the job is done by 40 little wooly lambs.David Johnson owns the vineyard (葡萄园). He says he learned about using lambs whilevisiting wineries in New Zealand. The young lambs are perfectly designed to do the job. They eat the grape leaves on the lower parts of the vine. But they are not tall enough to reach the grapes. They only weigh about 22 kilograms, so they do not beat down the soil. And their waste makes good organic fertilizer. In addition, using the lambs costs much less than hiring workers to cut the vines for seven weeks in summer. And when the cutting is done in August, the lambs become tasty dishes.Mr. Johnson says he had a difficult time finding enough lambs to do the job. There are about 50 million lambs in New Zealand. But there are not nearly as many in Ontario. Also, some organic pesticides (杀虫剂) are harmful to lambs. And the lambs must be watched to make sure they do not eat too much of the grapevines.David Johnson says the lambs help him carry out his environmental ideas about farming. They are lovely and peaceful and he likes having them in his vineyard. People visiting the vineyard also enjoy watching the lambs do their job.1.Farmers who grow grapes with natural and organic methods ________.A.don't cut grapevines every yearB.don't use chemicals to control harmful insects and weedsC.don't need to control harmful insects and weedsD.don't use organic fertilizer2.In order to help the grapes grow better, growers ________.A.only have to remove the dead leavesB.need to remove a specific area of leavesC.shouldn't remove any part of the plantsD.should let little lambs do the cutting3.Paragraph 4 is mainly about ________.A.the future of getting lambs to do the cuttingB.the worries about using organic pesticidesC.the ways to get lambs to do the cuttingD.the problems related to lambs doing the cutting4.We can infer from the passage that David Johnson ________.A.owns several wineries in CanadaB.buys lambs from New ZealandC.is concerned about protecting the environmentD.loves keeping lambs instead of farmingIV.短文改错My friend Dick was seven years old, and her sister Katherine was five. Researchers say letting your hot drinks cool off could help you avoid some kinds of cancer. In fact, the United Nations'cancer research agency decided to list hot drinks with lead, gasoline and exhaust fumes as “possibly carcinogenic.”In other words, each one could cause cancer.Researchers at IARC(The International Agency for Research on Cancer)found evidence that drinks at temperatures above65degrees Celsius, when swallowed, can cause cancer of the esophagus(食管).In developed countries, health experts have linked esophageal cancer to smoking and alcoholic drinks. However, researchers said“this form of cancer is more common in areas where people drink beverages at very high temperatures.”In Europe and the United States, many people drink coffee and tea at temperatures around60degrees Celsius. And they often add milk which lowers the temperature considerably. The findings, however, are good news for coffee drinkers.In1991,the World Health Organization listed coffee as“possibly carcinogenic.”WHO officials have since changed their position on that listing. They now suggest that the temperature of your hot drink is a greater risk factor than the actual drink itself.Christopher Wild is the director of the IARC.When he spoke with the AFP news agency,he said the results“suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible.”But how common is esophageal cancer?Worldwide,it is the eighth most common cancer.Cancer of the esophagus killed about400,000people in2012.I’m Anna Matteo.25.The passage is probably taken from____A.A health magazineB.A scientific researchC.A news reportD.A school text.26.According to the passage, which of court. She said that when she was11years old,her parents started sharing photos of her with several hundreds of Facebook friends, without ever asking if it was alright with her.“They didn’t care whether it was a picture of me sitting on the toilet or lying naked in my cot–every stage was photographed and then made public,”she said. The girl added that she was only able to see the photos posted on Facebook by her parents when she was14,after setting up her own account on the world’s most popular social network.Angry and upset,Anna asked her mother and father to remove the over500photos of her immediately, but they refused. She kept asking them over the years, but faced with constant refusal, she felt that she had no other way to coerce them than taking them to court.Which she did as soon as she turned18,this year.Although Anna is convinced that her right to privacy has been violated, her parents,on the other hand, see nothing wrong with posting baby photos of her. However,a German law firm speed(认知处理速度)and performed better in testing after watching20minutes of a3D film. This is despite suggestions that attention spans in children have shortened in the last decade due to unlimited to access to entertainment, including on-demand TV,gaming and social media.A2015study claimed that watching3D content had a similar effect to brain-training exercises.Consumer psychologist Mr Fagan said that the increased stimulation found in watching something in3D"exercised"the brain and improved performance in the short term."3D films can play the role of'brain-training'games and help to make children'smarter'in the short term,"he said."The shortening of response times after watching3D was almost three times as big as that gained from watching2D;in other words,3D helps children process aspects of their environment more quickly. This is likely to be because3D is a mentally stimulating experience which'gets the brain's juices flowing'."The experiment saw children given a range of cognitive tests before watching20minutes of a movie in either2D or3D and being tested again. The results showed those who saw the3D content reacted faster and performed better in the second round of testing.Mental engagement also rose by13%among3D watchers.Child psychologist Dr Woolfson added that"supportive parenting"and regularly listening to classical music can also aid a child's memory."Children now expect to flit(转换)from activity to activity in a matter of seconds, leaving them struggling when they need to concentrate for longer, for instance, during a classroom learning experience."he said.33.According to Mr.Fagan, why can3D movies help to make children smarter’?A.Their content is better than that of2DB.They have a similar effect to brain-training exercise.C.They can help children react faster and perform better.D.They can process aspects of the environment quickly.34.Which of the following is NOT true?A.All children performed better after watching a3D filmB.The
