A

Still in shock, I stumbled (踉跄) about the house trying to decide what to put into the suitcases. Earlier that evening I received a call from Missouri telling me that my brother’s family had been killed in a car accident. “Come as soon as you can,” begged my mother.

My husband Larry phoned a few friends to tell them what had happened. Occasionally, someone asked to speak to me. "If there's anything I can do, please let me know," that person would offer kindly.

“Thank you. Thank you very much,” I’d reply. But I didn't know what to ask for.

I was too confused to concentrate.

Then the doorbell rang. I opened the door to see Emerson King standing on the doorway.

“I've come to clean your shoes,” he said, “I remember when my father died, it took me hours to get the children's shoes cleaned for the funeral. Give me all your shoes.”

While I cleared the supper dishes, Emerson continued to work, saying nothing.

Later, when I started to pack, I saw all our shoes stood in a line, shining, spotless and

that even the bottoms had been brushed. I could put the shoes directly into the suitcases, knowing they wouldn’t dirty the clothes.

We got to bed late and rose very early, but by the time we left for the airport, all the jobs were done.

Now, whenever I hear of an acquaintance who has lost a loved one, I no longer call with the blurred (模糊的) offer, “If there's anything I can do...” Now I try to think of one specific task that suits that person's need –– such as washing the family car, taking care of the dog, or house-sitting during the funeral.

And if the person says to me, “How did you know I needed that done?”I reply, “It’s because a man once cleaned my shoes.”

21. Why did Emerson King choose to clean the shoes for the author?

A. He had long been skilled at doing so.

B. There were many dirty shoes in her home.

C. He knew what to do from his own experience.

D. It is common practice to do before a funeral.

22. Which of the following can best describe Emerson King?

A. helpful and considerate

B. neat and careful

C. honest and thoughtful

D. hard-working and determined

23. Which of the following proverbs can be used to best represent the story?

A. Blood is thicker than water.

B. A good neighbor is better than a brother far away.

C. A faithful friend is hard to find.

D. Action speaks louder than words.

B

Researchers at Intel Security carried out a study of 1,000 parents in the UK that made up part of the research. More than 40 percent said they were completely unaware of their children’s activity online.

“Technology has revolutionized our home lives, with many parents relying on devices (设备) to help their children with learning and entertainment.” said Nick Viney, VP of Consumer at Intel Security. “However, we need to enable parents to actively manage how their families interact with those devices to ensure the benefits continue to outweigh the potential risks.”

As one of the world’s largest and highest valued semiconductor chip makers, Intel is urging parents to follow their series of tips if they are worded about what their kids might be up to on the Internet.

Start conversations early: If you start talking about online safety early, it will make your job that much easier when your children get older. If your kids are young, start with simple rules like: “don’t open emails from people you don’t know.”You want online safety to be part of normal behavior.

Set a good example: Set a positive example by limiting your time on social networks when at home and putting your phone away during dinner and family time.

Keep strangers out: Most children have been using devices from an early age, desensitizing them to the potential risks of online behavior. A false sense of security can set in for children and they could be unknowingly interacting with a dangerous person posing as a teen. This isn’t just on social media networks; it applies to common services such as Uber, Lyft and Craigslist. Remind kids that anyone can create a profile and to decline friend requests from strangers. Take control of your home network: The home network is the center for all of your connected devices. New solutions, such as McAfee Secure Home Platform, help you easily manage and protect devices connected to this network while providing parental controls with permissions that can be tailored to the entire household.

24. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. Intel provided ways to monitor children’s online activity.

B. Intel announced new policies about semiconductor chip.

C. A research on online safety was done among UK parents.

D. Some effective ways to use smart devices at home.

25. What can we infer from Nick Viney’s words in paragraph 2?

A. It’s not necessary for Intel to carry out the study.

B. Technology has brought a bad effect on children’s learning.

C. Online security should be ensured by the Intel.

D. The devices can be more beneficial than dangerous if used properly.

26. What does the underlined part “desensitizing them to” mean according to the passage?

A. Making them more aware of.

B. Making them more concerned about.

C. Making them less sensitive to.

D. Making them easily understand.

27. What should parents do according to Intel’s tips?

A. Make full use of social networks to do business even at home.

B. Talk with their children about online safety as early as possible.

C. Allow their children to make friends with anyone on the Internet.

D. Keep the devices connected to the network all the time.

C

Even the dirt on the ground is likely making climate change worse, a new study finds.

Researchers have shown that warmer temperatures are heating the soil, which is causing microbes (微生物) to become more active and release more of the soil’s carbon into the atmosphere.

Ben Bond-Lamberty of the Joint Global Change Research Institute is the lead author of the study. He says, “These soil changes can potentially contribute to even higher temperatures.”

The findings were published on August 2 in the journal Nature.

Scientists studied device readings, soil measurements, plant growth details and satellite observations from around the world. Their work is the most complete study yet on the subject.

They found a sharp increase in carbon released into the atmosphere by bacteria and fungi (真菌) in soil from 1990 through 2014. Researchers explain that the carbon comes from the dead plants and leaves the microbes eat. As temperatures rise, the microbes eat more. And the more they eat, the more carbon they make into carbon dioxide and release into the atmosphere.

This uncontrolled cycle speeds up and intensifies climate change, says Jerry Melilo of Marine Biological Laboratory in Massachusetts. Melilo was not part of the study.

Overall, soil releases about nine times more carbon than human-caused activities. But that is part of a natural cycle: The amount of carbon released into the air is about equal to the carbon oceans and plants take in.

However, carbon released from fossil fuel causes an imbalance. Burning coal, oil and natural gas puts more carbon into the atmosphere than nature can take out. The additional carbon heats the air and soil. And as the air and soil get hotter, the earth will release yet more carbon than it has been holding.

“If something isn't done, we are really in trouble,” said Rattan Lal of Ohio State University. He added that proper soil conservation can help keep more carbon in soil. Conservation methods include avoiding turning the soil, covering off-season crops and leaving crop deposits on the ground.

28.What’s the right order of the uncontrolled cycle?

①even higher temperatures are caused

②microbes become more active

③microbes release more of the soil’s carbon into the atmosphere

④warm temperatures heat the soil

A.①②③④

B. ④②③①

C. ④③①②

D. ②①④③

29.What can we learn from the text?

A. Carbon released from fossil fuel contributes to a balance

B. The amount of carbon released into the air is always equal.

C. Scientists have done the most thorough research so far on the subject.

D. Ben Bond-Lamberty and Rattan Lal are members of the study.

30. What does the underlined word “intensifies” in paragraph6 mean?

A. affects

B. causes

C. releases

D. fuels

31. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Warmer soil releasing more carbon

B. High temperatures heating the soil

C. The earth becoming much warmer

D. Microbes making climate change worse

D

You’ll probably never go to Mars or sing on the stage with the Rolling Stones. But if virtual reality (VR) ever lives up to its promise, you might be able to do all these things—and many more—without even leaving your home. Unlike real reality, virtual reality means simulating (模仿) bits of our world. Apart from games and entertainment, it’s long been used for training airline pilots and surgeons and for helping scientists to figure out complex problems such as the structure of protein molecules (分子). Then how does it work?

Close your eyes and think of virtual reality and you probably picture something like this: a man wearing a wrap-around headset and data gloves wired into a powerful workstation or

supercomputer. What distinguishes VR from an ordinary computer experience is the nature of the input and output. Where an ordinary computer uses things like a keyboard, a mouse, or speech recognition for input, VR uses sensors that detect how your body is moving. And where a PC displays output on a screen, VR uses two screens (one for each eye), surround-sound speakers, and maybe some forms of touch and body feedback as well.

VR has been routinely used by scientists, doctors, dentists, engineers, architects, archaeologists, and the military for about the last 30 years. Difficult and dangerous jobs are hard to train for. How can you safely practice taking a trip to space, making a parachute jump, or carrying out brain surgery? All these things are obvious candidates for virtual reality applications.

Like any technology, virtual reality has both good and bad points. Critics always raise the risk that people may be addicted to alternative reality to the point of ignoring their real—world lives—but that criticism has been leveled on everything from radio and TV to computer games and the Internet. Like many technologies, VR takes little or nothing away from the real world: you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to.

32. What equipment do we probably need for virtual reality?

A. A headset, data gloves and a supercomputer.

B. A headset, data gloves and speech recognition.

C. A keyboard, a headset and a supercomputer.

D. A keyboard, a mouse and speech recognition.

33. Paragraph 3 is mainly about___________.

A. the principles of virtual reality

B. the history of virtual reality

C. the applications of virtual reality

D. the influences of virtual reality

34. According to the passage, virtual reality means____________.

A. imagining beautiful things in our mind

B. experiencing things that don’t really exist

C. creating something that doesn’t exist

D. cloning something that has died out

35. What is the writer’s attitude towards VR?

A. Indifferent

B. Cautious

C. Skeptical

D. Appreciative

A I have had all kinds of interesting neighbors since the early days of my life. When I was a baby I would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. Some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. They used to call me “the beauty at the window”. The early neighbors I could remember were from the second house I lived in. Peter and Paul were twins. We went to play school together although they were a year older than me. I well remember the Alsatian they had which ran into me when I was invited to their fifth birthday party. Needless to say, I was well-known for my loud screams after the party. But they said the pet was scared of my screams and didn’t appear until the party was over. Peter and Paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. I could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviors—I just did what I thought was fun. Not only did I have a great time performing that first climb, I also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother. The Japanese neighbors I had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. They gave me some seaweed for my birthday. Thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as I did. Perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that I was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a Japanese home. Maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. But all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. I have decided to be that spark wherever I live and pass love on to my neighbors. 21. We can guess "the Alsatian" in the twin brothers' home is ___________. A. a small child B. an interesting toy C. a dog D. a bicycle 22. From the passage we can know that the author___________. A. enjoyed the Japanese neighbors' cooking style most B. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers' family C. was described as interesting when playing with boys D. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants 23. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author often moved to other places. B. Peter and Paul liked to play tricks on others. C. The neighbors the author had were good at cooking. D. The author had a good relationship with her neighbors. B Below are four ads on the website.Artful Experience It’s an artful experience even if you’re artistically challenged.
