AbstractOne-loopcalculationsinquantumgravitycoupledtoU(1)-Abelianfields(photonfields)areultravioletfiniteandcutoff-freeintheframeworkofcausalperturbationtheory.Wecomputethephotonloopgravitonself-energyandthephotonself-energyinsecondorderperturbationtheory.TheconditionofperturbativegaugeinvariancetosecondorderisshownandgeneratesthegravitationalSlavnov–Wardidentities.QuantumcorrectionstotheNewtonianpotentialthroughthephotonloopgravitonself-energyarealsoderived.

21IntroductionThestandardfieldtheoreticalperturbativeapproachtoquantumgravity(seetheintroductiontothissubjectin[1]andreferencestherein),consideredasaflatspace-timerelativisticquantumfieldtheoryofgravitons,masslessrank-2tensorfields,coupledtophotons,masslessvectorfields,leadstonon-renormalizableultraviolet(UV)divergences.Thesewerefoundbymeansofdimensionalregu-larizationandbackgroundfieldmethod[2],[3],[4]and[5].AcloserinvestigationofloopcalculationsinquantumfieldtheoryshowsthatthereasonfortheUVdivergencesliesbasicallyinthefactthatoneperformsmathematicallyill-definedoperations,whenusingFeynmanrulesforclosedloopgraphs,becauseonemultipliesFeynmanpropagatorsasiftheywereordinaryfunctions.Weshowhowitispossibletoovercomethesediscouragingoutcomesbyapplyinganimprovedperturbationschemewhichhasascentralobjectsthetime-orderedproductsandasconstructingprinciplecausality.TheS-matrixisconstructedinductivelyasasumofsmearedoperator-valuedn-pointdistribu-tionsavoidingUVdivergences.UVfinitenessofS-matrixelementsisthenaconsequenceofadeepermath-ematicalunderstandingofhowloopgraphcontributionshavetobecalculated.ThisideagoesbacktoSt¨uckelberg,BogoliubovandShirkovandthepro-gram(causalperturbationtheory)wascarriedoutsuccessfullybyEpsteinandGlaser[6]forscalarfieldtheoriesandsubsequentlyappliedtoQEDbyScharf[7],tonon-AbeliangaugetheoriesbyD¨utschetal.[8]andtoquantumgravity[9].InthisworkwecarryouttheanalysisofthecoupledquantizedEinstein–Maxwellsystem,Sec.2.2.Twomaintopicswillbeinvestigatedinthispaper:thegaugestructureofthetheoryandtheUVfinitenessofloopgraphsinsecondorderperturbationtheory.Thefirstisformulatedbymeansofa‘gaugecharge’thatgeneratesinfinites-imalgaugevariationsofthefundamentalfreequantumfields.GaugeinvarianceoftheS-matriximpliesthenasetofidentitiesbetweentheC-numberpartofthe2-pointdistributions,Sec.2.4,whichimpliesthegravitationalSlavnov–Wardidentities(SWI)[10].Thesecondisobtainedbyapplyingthe‘causalperturbation’scheme,Sec.3,tothecalculationsofthephotonloopgravitonself-energy,Sec.4,andofthephotonself-energy,Sec.5,insecondorderperturbationtheory.InbothcasestheresultsareUVfiniteandcutoff-freeandtheinherentambiguityinthenormaliza-tionofthe2-pointdistributionissettledbyrequiringappropriatenormalizationconditionsformassandcouplingconstant.Inaddition,thecausalschemepreservesthegaugesymmetriesofthetheory.Thetraceofthegravitonself-energytensorvanishes.Thispropertywasmani-festlybrokenusingdimensionalregularizationinordertoextractfiniteresultsfromUVdivergentquantities[11].Fromthephotonloopgravitonself-energywesketchthederivationofquan-
