For many high school students, giving an in-class presentation is an approach to their growth. Teachers will call up students, one by one, to present their work in front of the class, and, though it is often tense, many people say it has helped turn them into more confident public speakers. Some educators also credit it with building leadership skills and increasing students' confidence and understanding of materials. But in the past few years, students have started calling for an end to in-class presentations as they show discrimination against those with anxiety. This week, a tweet posted by a 15-year-old high school student declaring "Stop forcing students to present in front of the class and give them a choice not to" received more than 130,000 rewets and nearly half a million likes. In fact, being a high schooler nowadays is more stressful than ever. Students are burdened with extra hours of homework. They stay up every night till 1:00 a.m. finishing homework on their third Red Bull. Anxiety is increasing at a faster rate than depression (抑郁) as the leading mental-health issue affectingteenagers, a recent study in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics found. These students want more options. They say that every student has unique strengths and that they should be allowed to present their work in ways that speak to those strengths. This might mean presenting alone in front of the teacher, or choosing between several alternatives like producing a piece of art or an essay for private judgment instead of presenting their work orally.Educators have begun to take it seriously. They agree teachers should listen to students and hear their voices and respond to that. If students’ feelings are ignored, they might just walk away. However, not everyone is convinced. Some hold the view that pushing students out of comfort zones is a big part of what they should do as some students are deathly afraid to do it.

Accurate estimates indicate that there are approximately 6000 languages around the world, of which half are now in danger of extinction.❷
Despite the existence of serious challenges in protecting these dying languages, measures can be adopted to revive them.❸例如,Welsh受到法律的保护,Maori受到制度的保护,Kaurna通过记录来保护。
Welsh, for example, is being preserved by law, Maori by a protection system and Kaurna by proper records.❹
(主题句与关键词已在原文中标出)Look inside any family home in the evening, and you might see a typical enough scene: Mom and Dad, each on their own laptop or tablet, streaming movies, catching up on work or maybe answering emails on their smart phones.Meanwhile, one child is chatting online with one school friend while texting another. The other is playing a video game with a friend on the other side of the city at the same time. Each member of the family is totally absorbed in his or her own piece of technology.According to some experts, the effect of technology on human relationships is worrying as technology becomes a substitute for face-to-face human relationships. It appears to be the case that many people would much rather spend time with their electronic gadgets(电子产品)than with one another. Young people say it isdifficult to get their parents' attention and they have to compete with smart phones, tablets and other technology. However, a report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project offers a more helpful and encouraging view, suggesting that far from replacing human contact, technology can actually better family relationships. Just over half of the 2,253 people surveyed agreed that technology had enabled them to increase their contact with distant family members and 47 percent said it had improved the communication with the people they lived with. Moreover, even the closest members of families need time away from each other at some point to seek their own interests. Family members who might otherwise have sat in separate rooms can now be in the same one while still occupying a different mental space.Look back at our typical family scene above. Is it any different from four people reading their own books? Or is it driving families apart? Where technology will lead us remains to be seen. Yet there is no need to worry. As a matter of fact, how it affects our family relationships depends on our attitude toward technology.

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was though to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.Though the belief in the merit (好处) of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18 century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist (免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter (后者) position is gaining some ground. One possible version:People have mixed opinions towards dirt on our skin. (要点 1 ) For a long time in history, people of some European countries, such as France, believed that dirt protected people from getting ill. (要点 2 ) However, people began to change their attitudes to dirt about 200 years ago. People have been told that washing dirt off our body can keep us healthy. (要点 3) However, some scientists believe that exposure to some dirt may help our immune system. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt. Different people have different attitudes towards dirt. Different people have different attitudes towards dirt on the skin. 1“People have mixed opinions towards dirt on our skin.”

Have you ever intended to be fully absorbed in your work but found yourself distracted(被分心)by e-mail, the Internet and other things throughout the day? "People often lose their concentration when they are bored or when they are engaged in several challenging tasks at the same time." says Peter Bregman. "They sometimes feel the need to escape from what's difficult or boring, so they jump out," he says. The part of the brain devoted to attention is connected to the brain's emotional center. Any strong emotion--quarrels with colleagues, problems at home –can interrupt our attention. Studies over the last decade have shown that too much work to do at a time can easily lead to distraction.Refocusing is hard for many people. Robert Epstein suggests the following, "Stop and listen to music for a few minutes. Go for a short walk or take a deep breath. While you breathe in deeply, count to five slowly, hold it and breathe out very slowly." This can blow out all the tension and the unwanted in your mind to restore your focus.Take more control of what you are doing. "Setting the phone alarm to go off(响起来) every hour is my way of creating awareness of my behavior," Mr. Bregman says. "You have to inform yourself that you've lost focus inorder to do something about it." Starting the day with a to-do list is important, such as when to eat, when to go to the gym or take a walk. But if it's overly ambitious(雄心勃勃的) you will put yourself in a state of anxiety, which makes it hard for the brain to concentrate. "Choosing three or four things as your priority(优先事项) for the day allows your brain to settle down and focus," he says.二、词汇讲解1. intend to do sth 打算…,想要做…It is still far from clear what they intend to do.
