摘要

目前,大学生英语自主学习能力普遍较低,而自主学习能力的培养是教育、教学的重要目标,本文以大学英语教与学的现状为基础,主要讨论自主学习的内涵、参与者以及通过和传统学习的对比来阐述如何较好的进行自主学习。

Abstract

At present the college students' ability of autonomous English learning is poor. However,

the cultivation of autonomous learning ability is an important target of education and teaching.

On the base of the current English teaching and learning practice in college, this paper

discusses its connotation, participants and how to carry out autonomous learning well by

comparing it with traditional learning.

Cultivation of College Students’ Autonomous English Learning

1.Introduction

In 2004, the book Teaching Requirement of College English issued by the Ministry of

Education stated, “teachers should change their role from the mode of teaching knowledge

and skills monotonously to the cultivation of autonomous learning and application of

language including teaching knowledge and skills.” It also pointed out that the center of

learning should be students instead of teachers and particularly laid emphasis on the

improvement of students’ autonomy and the individuation of English teaching. Thus

autonomous English learning became an important part of innovation of college English

teaching and since then the cultivation of autonomous English learning has become the key

point of English teaching in colleges.

The cultivation of autonomous English learning can not only help students learn English

well but also can do good to the cultivation of their abilities, such as independence,

consciousness, creativity, comprehension and so on. This exerts great effect on their future

lives and jobs. The paper mainly introduces some advantages of autonomous English learning

and ways to cultivate it.

2. Definition of Autonomous English learning

Autonomous English learning is a new way of study. For the definition of autonomous

English learning, different people hold different views. A lot of scholars have studied its basic

theories, characteristics, and significance to teaching and learning. The paper talks about its

presenters, connotation and participants.

2.1 Presenter

In 1981, Holec, the father of the theory of autonomous learning said “the ability of

autonomous learning is the ability of supervising ourselves. It acquires us to learn by

ourselves and solve problems which come out in autonomous learning”. Then Little defined

autonomous learning as the ability of dependence, critical considering, making decisions and

putting decisions in practice. Nunan also admitted the importance of this ability. He thought

autonomous learning was that people were able to establish their own targets and create

opportunities of learning. All these scholars are the representatives studying autonomous

learning. Other famous scholars, such as Cotterall, Allwright, also state their own views. Due

to these different opinions, people need a better and comprehensive ways to learn

autonomously.

2.2 Definition

Autonomous learning a relative modern way of learning compared with traditional

learning. Students who are in the center of learning achieve their targets by analysis,

exploration, practice, doubt, creation and so on. As a rule, autonomous learning indicates that

learners can choose their targets, contents and methods of learning freely according to their

own conditions and demand under the macro control of the whole teaching targets and in the

directions of teachers. Besides they can achieve their detailed targets by self-adjustment.
