Passage B
Charles Dickens was an English writer. He was born in 1812. He created some of the world’s best-known characters and many readers think he is the most important writer of the Victorian era (1837—1901). Some of his famous novels are Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and Great Expectations. Most people in his novels lived in London.
In 1824, Dickens’ father went to prison (监狱) because he couldn’t pay money to someone. In those days, a man’s wife and young children went to prison with him. Charles was 12, so he left school to work in the prison. Life was hard, and a lot of children worked in those days. Dickens’ own experience helped him to write about poor children without a mother or f ather. Dickens’ success began with the publication (出版) of The Pickwick Papers in 1836. And his book Oliver Twist is about a boy without father. Important people were more interested in the problems of poor people after reading Dickens’ books.
Dickens’ novels are often very long and he wrote them in different parts for a newspaper each week. His novels have a lot of exciting and sad things in them. He wanted his readers to buy the newspaper every week. And the readers wanted to finish the story! Passage C
It was a Christmas night. I was an unlucky nurse who had to work on such a beautiful
festival. I wasn’t happy about it. When I was complaining about it, thr ee people
appeared at my desk — a tired woman and two children.
“Are you all sick?” I asked doubtfully because they seemed all right.
“Yes,” the woman answered weakly and lowered her head.
But when they started to present their problems, things became unclear. One child had a fever, but his temperature was OK. The other child had an earache, but she could not tell me which ear hurt. It seemed that the mother was pretending(假装)to cough.
Something was wrong. But I only explained that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them. “Take your time, please,” said the mother. I checked their charts — no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless while the hospital was warm.
The family huddled(蜷缩)together under the Christmas tree, smiling and talking with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurse station and told them what happened in the waiting room. It was just like God sending us a gift on Christmas Day. The nurse station suddenly came back to life. All the nurses went into action for “a Christmas emergency(急诊)”.
We took out our meals for our Christmas “patients”. We also put together oranges and apples as presents. We tried to give them more than their needs of a family who only wanted a warm place on Christmas night. Later, the little girl kissed me and said, “Thanks for being our angel(天使).”

Passage D
FOMO
Everybody knows how important it is for students to get a good night’s sleep every night. You aren’t able to do your best unless you sleep well. I’m sure you’ve already known that you should go to bed at a reasonable time. Most experts agree that the proper number of hours is eight, and this is accepted as common sense. However, I know that most of you get much less sleep than that — and sometimes it will have bad effect on your schoolwork.
I read an interesting article in a teachers’ magazine recently. They did a study of 848 students in Wales. Worryingly, the results showed that teenagers are facing a new problem. They may go to bed
and get up at certain times but growing number are waking up in the middle of the night, not to use the bathroom or have a snack but because of a new phenomenon (现象): FOMO --- fear of missing out! According to the article, a growing number of schoolchildren wake up during the night to check social media (媒体). Afraid of missing a comment (评论) or opportunity to take part in a chat, they are waking at all times of the night, going online and getting involved. All this happens when they should be sound asleep.
Experts are worried about this and the report shows some worrying facts: 23% of 12 to 15-year-olds wake up nearly every night to use social media. Another 15% wake up at night once a week for the same reason.
One in three students often feel tired and unable to work normally.
Students who use social media during the night are more likely to feel unhappy and stressed.
So, I’d like to ask you to be responsible when it comes to social media. Be brave! Turn off your machines at night. The world won’t end and your social media will be waiting to greet you in the morning! I give you my word that you won’t have missed anything important.
