Abstract:Hydroxyapatite(HA)coatings were prepared on carbon/carbon(C/C)composites by plasma spraying and tested by in vitro and in vivo methods. The X—ray diffraction results indicated that the coatings consisted of HA.ot.trical—
cium phosphate, and tetracalcium phosphate. The in vitro biological behavior of the HA coatings was studied in a Ringer solution. With increasing immersion time, new particles appeared on the surface of the coatings and these particles be— came bigger through agglomeration. In the days after the implantation, the experimental animals had no inflammation and rejection, and the coatings were firmly attached to the substrate.Histological observation showed that there was ob— vious bone tissue reconstruction on the surface of the coatings. In this light, the HA coatings plasma—sprayed on C/C composites have excellent biological behavior and show promise as a bone repairing materia1. 1 Introduction carbon/carbon composites(C/C)have excel— lent biocompatibility and biomechanical properties. Because their elastic modulus is close to that of human bone, they can avoid bone resorption caused by stress shielding effect¨,2 j.However.the surface hydropho—
bic properties of unprocessed C/C composites ensure the nomadic carbon flow with the body fluid and de— posit on the skin.causing“Black Skin Effect”L 3 J.
When it is implanted in human body for a long time.
it lacks reliable combination with the bone tissue. Hydroxyapatite(HA)has been widely used as hard tissue replacing biomaterials.because of its similarity to the inorganic component of the bone .However. owing to the poor fracture toughness of the HA bulk. mis material cannot meet the biomechanical demand as bone replacing materia1.Preparation of bioactive HA coatings on C/C composites could not only com— bine the fine bioactivity of HA with the good biome— chanical properties of C/C composites.but also solve the problem of carbon powder desquamate at the same time. Several methods have been used to prepare HA bioactive coatings on C/C composites。such as che— mical electronic deposition l3 .ion beam—assisted de— position L 6 J, ection and sinter ,plasma spra—
ying ,and so on.Among them,XIoNG Xin-bo et a1..successfully prepared bioactive HA coatings on C/C composites by sonoelectodepostion/alkaline—heat treatment and they also studied the material surface by means of X—ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Results revealed that a chemical bond is formed be. tween HA coating and C/C composites through P—o—c and H—O—C chemical bond on the interface[9,10].HAN Hong—mei et a1.studied calcium
phosphate sonoelectrodeposition on carbon fabrics and its effect on osteoblast cell viability in vitro¨ .Plas. ma spraying technology has been widely used to pre— pare an ideal biomedical coating. The plasma—sprayed HA coatings usually have fine homogeneity and enough interface bond strength with the substrate. The HA plasma—sprayed titanium and titanic alloys have acquired preference as effective in clinical applica- tions【12,13 J.Nevertheless,as the tissue replacing ma—
terials are hard, further studies need to be carded out on biological behavior of HA coatings on C/C com— posites. Under normal conditions.there are two ways to study bioactivities of materials:the in vitro test and the in vivo test.In the in vitro experiment.the sam— pies were immerged in the Ringer solution 14 J.This
solution is characterized by the similar ion species.
