Making the newsⅠ.阅读理解AA new study of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily,it is a bad thing for young people.Puppy love (早恋) may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression(抑郁症).The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is “loss of self”.According to the study, even though boys would say “lose themselves in a romantic relationship”,this“loss of self”is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls.Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won't tell that to their parents.Dr Marianm Kaufman,an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will have depression during their growing.Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance too early.During growing up,it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents should stimulate their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend enough time with family.Parents should watch for signs of depression- eating or mood changes-and if they see signs from their daughters or sons, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance and depression seems to become weak with age.Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity (成熟)gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.1.What's the main idea of the passage?A.Puppy love may bring young people depression.B.Parents should forbid their children's love.C.Romance is a twoedged sword for adults.D.Romance is good for young people.2.Which of the following is more likely to have depression?A.Young people who have a strong sense of selfishness.B.Young boys whose parents watch for their behavior.C.Young girls who always hide their feelings andopinions.D.Careless parents whose children are deep in love.3.The underlined word in Paragraph 3 means______.A.encourage B.forbidC.expect D.force4.What can be inferred from the passage?A.Lacking love can lead young people to grow up more quickly.B.Early love makes young people keep close to their friends and parents.C.Parents should help their children to be aware of the signs of depression.D.The older a woman is,the less likely she seems to lose herself in romance.BThey can be seen more frequently than ever before on college campuses, wearing flannel(法兰绒)and thickframed glasses while listening to music. One might find them playing unusual musical instruments, shopping at secondhand stores or expressing themselves in other unique ways. They call themsel ves hipsters.Being “hip” used to mean following the latest fashion. But gradually the word has become a sign of “being cool, unique and unusual”.Hipsters value independent thinking, progressive politics,an appreciation of creativity and intelligence.Hipsters take pains and pride in not being mainstream. However, their culture has become quite trendy. This irony(讽刺)is central to their culture and offers an interesting conflict.“I do take things in the mainstream with a positive attitude,” says Ben Polson,a college student at Brown University.“But sometimes I also question what determines popularity, especially regarding music.” Polson represents many hipsters. When lessknown bands become popular, they often lose their former fan base in exchange for a new one. There is a famous hipster saying that goes,“I used to like that band before it got popular,” Polson quoted.According to Polson, bands' music changes when they go mainstream. They become less experimental, doing things just to save popularity and fans. The original elements that we were drawn to slowly disappear for the sake of popularity. Many young adults have started to view hipsters' outlook as cool and they areadopting hipsters' antimainstream culture mind to themselves. This has led to specialized brands, stores and music for the hipster consumers. But on the other hand, some such stores, including clothing labels Urban Outfitters and American Apparel, have gained mainstream popularity. This has seemingly made the antimainstream culture become weaker.“A lot of people that are selfdefined hipsters aren't really hipsters. They're just trying to act as hipsters to seem cooler,” says Amanda Leopold,a college student from Oberlin College,US.Although Leopold has many unusual tastes and seems quite individualist, she refuses to classify herself as a hipster.5.In the passage, hipsters refer to people________.A.who are fans of pop musicB.who study in different collegesC.who appear cool and unusualD.who try to attract others6.According to the author,________.A.hipsters are the pioneers of the mainstreamB.hipsters are unhappy with the mainstreamC.hipsters' culture exists mainly in music fieldD.hipsters' culture can also become popular7.What is the main idea of the seventh paragraph?A.Urban Outfitters and American Apparel are famous clothing labels.B.Hipster consumers have more specialized brands, stores and music.C.Antimainstream culture can gain mainstream popularity.D.The culture of hipsters is becoming more and more terrible.8.When describing hipsters, the author speaks________.A.in an ironic voice B.in an objective voiceC.in an angry voice D.in a funny voiceⅡ.七选五补缺题Everyone loves a party but when you're the 高考英语一轮复习Unit4Makingthenews练习(含解析)新人教版必修5Unit 4 Making the newsⅠ.阅读理解APersuasion is the art of convincing someone to agree with you.According to the ancient Greeks, there are three basic tools of persuasion:ethos, pathos, and logos.Ethos is a speaker’s way of convincing the audience that he is trustworthy, honest and reliable. One common way a speaker can develop ethos is by explaining how much experience or education he has in the field. After all, you’re more likely to listen to advice about how to take care of your teeth from a dentist than a fireman.A speaker can also create ethos by convincing the audience that he is a good person. If the audience cannot trust you,you will not be able to persuade them.Pathos is a speaker’s way of connecting with the audience’s emotions. For example,a politician who is trying to convince the audience to vote for him might say that he alone can save the country from a terrible war. These words are intended to fill the audience with fear, thus making them support him.Similarly,an animal charity might show the audience pictures of injured dogs and cats,to make the viewers feel pity.If the audience feel bad for the animals, they will be more likely to donate money.Logos is the use of facts, statistics,or other evidence to support your argument. The audience will be more likely to believe you if you have convincing data to back up your claims.Presenting this evidence is much more persuasive than simply saying “believe me”.Although ethos, pathos, and logos all have their strengths, they are often most effective when used together.Indeed, most speakers use a combination of ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade their audience. So,the next time you listen to a speech, watch a commercial,or listen to a friend who try to convince you to lend him some money,be on the lookout for these ancient Greek tools of persuasion.1.How is a speaker able to show his ethos to the audience?A.By expressing his sympathy with the audience.B.By telling the audience about his personal preference.C.By using beautiful language to make his statements attractive.D.By showing his knowledge and experience relating to the topic.2.What can we learn about the three aspects of persuasion?A.Ethos is the most important aspect of persuasion.B.Each aspect has a different effect on the audience.C.Honesty is the key to making your arguments believable.D.Political leaders never use pathos to persuade their audience.3.An advertisement for washing powder which claims that “scientific tests show that our powder kills 95% of all bacteria” is mainly using .A.ethosB.pathosC.logosD.a combination of all three语篇解读:文章介绍了三种说服他人的技巧。
Making the news李仕才一、阅读理解。
It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don’t worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech —"I Have a Dream", you may notice that he stumbles (结巴)over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performance. They are looking for awell-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly.Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker’s attractiveness by making him more human. As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being perfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.1.The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will .A.be smarter than youB. know what you are talking aboutC.do better than youD. notice your mistakes2.You don’t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because .A. you find the way of speech-making more importantB. you don’t fully understand the speechC. you don’t know what the speaker plans to sayD. your attention is on the content3.From the last two paragraphs, the author means that .A. giving a speech is like giving a performanceB. the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is madeC.one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad。

Got big plans for Friday night? That’s OK, we don’t either.Guess we’ll all have to make do by watching the celestial(天空的) show that will take place that night.First, there will be a full moon. That’s always fun, but this one will be a little more special. It’s known as a “snow moon”. The name comes from the fact that the heaviest snows usually fall during February, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. But if that’s not special enough, there’s also an eclipse(月食) that night. It’ll be a penumbral lunar eclipse, meaning it’s a partial eclipse that leaves sections of t he moon darkened by the earth’s shadow. No, it won’t be as spectacular as those “blood moon” eclipses. It’ll be subtler. The level of darkness it reaches during the eclipse may or may not be apparent;it just depends on where you are when you view it.In North America, the eclipse begins at 5:34 p.m. ET and ends at 9:53 p.m. ET, according to the astronomy website EarthSky. The eclipse will be at its height around 7:44 p.m. ET.If that’s still not enough, let’s throw in a comet(彗星) to the night’s festivities.Comet 45P (it has a much longer name, but we won’t burden you with it here) is visible as it flies by the earth. The comet will get within 7.4 million miles of the planet as it makes its closest approach this weekend, according to Universe Today.Comet 45P will be most visible a couple of hours after the eclipse, so look tothe skies again around 3 a.m. ET Saturday and find the greenishblue light with a tail. And don’t forget, a total bigtime solar eclipse will streak across the United States on August 21st.【解题导语】本文是说明文,介绍了星期五晚上将会发生的天文现象。
