大学是象牙塔吗英语作文University is often referred to as an ivory tower, a place where students are sheltered from the real world and are free to pursue knowledge and intellectual growth without the distractions of everyday life. This concept has been romanticized in literature and popular culture, but is it an accurate representation of the university experience? In this essay, I will explore theidea of the university as an ivory tower from multiple perspectives, considering both its positive and negative implications. From one perspective, the university can be seen as an ivory tower in the sense that it provides a safe and nurturing environment for students to explore their academic interests. In this view, the university is a place of intellectual freedom and creativity, where students are encouraged to think critically and pursue their passions without the pressures of the outside world. This perspective emphasizes the importance of the university as a space for learning and personal growth, where students can develop their skills and knowledge in a supportive and stimulating environment. On the other hand, the concept of the university as an ivory tower can also carry negative connotations. Some argue that the university can be an isolatingand elitist institution, disconnected from the realities of the world outside its walls. This perspective highlights the potential for universities to perpetuate privilege and exclusion, catering primarily to a select group of students while neglecting the needs of those from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, the ivory tower metaphor can suggest a sense of detachment and arrogance, with academics and students becoming out of touch with the practical concerns of society. It is important to acknowledge that both perspectives hold some truth. While the university can be a place of intellectual exploration and personal development, it also has the potential to perpetuate inequality and insularity. However, it is crucial to recognize that the university is not a monolithic entity, but rather acomplex and diverse institution with a range of experiences and realities for different individuals. From a personal perspective, I have found the university to be a place of both intellectual stimulation and social growth. As a student, I have been able to pursue my academic interests and engage in meaningful discussions with peers and professors. The university has provided me with opportunities to expand my knowledge and develop critical thinking skills, and I have felt supported in my academic endeavors. However, I have also witnessed instances of elitism and exclusion within the university, where certain voices and perspectives are marginalized. This has led me to question the extent to which the university truly embodies the ideals of inclusivity and diversity. In conclusion, the concept of the university as an ivory tower is a complex and multifaceted one. While it can be a place of intellectual freedom and personal growth, it also has the potential to perpetuate privilege and exclusion. As a student, I believe it is important to critically engage with the university experience, recognizing its strengths and limitations. Ultimately, the university should strive to be a space that fosters intellectual curiosity and social responsibility, while actively working to address issues of inequality and injustice. Only then can it truly fulfill its potential as a site of learning and progress.。
作文1-5Sample Essay One:I like to study on my ownMany of my classmates like to study together. However, I always like to study on my own, with good reason. First, I feel that I can concentrate better when I study alone. When I have to work together with other people, I often get distracted and more often than not, I end up chatting with them without completing the task at hand. Second, when I study on my own, I can work at my own pace, choosing to spend more time on certain difficult sections and less time on less challenging parts. I can also check my class notes or reference books whenever I feel the need to. One final good advantage of studying alone is that unlike group work, self study is not restricted by time and space. In other words, if I feel like studying, I can do so at any time and anywhere. (146 words)▆Sample Essay Two:I like to study in a groupAccording to a recent study, students who study together by discussing homework and problems usually score higher than those who work on their own. I am happy to hear that because I like to study in a group. I think we can reinforce our understanding of what we have learned in class by asking each other questions. Besides, it is always enjoyable working with someone else. A discussion on questions we don’t understand very well will help clear up any possible confusion. Last but not least, we should not ignore the importance of cooperation in our society. Working with others helps develop our team spirit, which has become essential in this modern world of ours. After all, two heads are always better than one.(125words)▆Sample EssayCollege is Not an Ivory TowerPeople often say that college is an ivory tower and life on campus is cut off from the harsh realities of the real world. When he remained silent, I ran out and went off to play games with my friends in the neighbourhood. When it was turning dark, I saw my father looking around for me. He patted me on the head and walked back home with me, his arm wrapped around my shoulder. When I got home, I saw my book had “returned” to my reading table. My mother gave in each time I threatened to do that, but one day, she criticised me really hard. She scolded me for being selfish and inconsiderate and asked me to sit in a corner and reflect on my own behaviour. I couldn’t believe my mother would be so angry with me and I grew afraid. The Advantages and Disadvantages of Living in the 21st century(生活在21世纪的优缺点)Living in the 21st century offers certain advantages, such as a higher standard of living, but it also has some disadvantages, such as a polluted environment. To begin with, most people now have more money for less hard work. They earn higher salaries than before and enjoy better social security, such as social welfare for laid-off workers and disability insurance.Secondly, because of the advance in medical technology which leads to better medical care and treatment, people’s life expectancy is longer. Moreover, most people now can afford to buy foods of high nutrition and enjoy their leisure time.Thirdly, modern conveniences such as radio, TV, internet, various vehicles and labour-saving machines in the home, all greatly facilitate human communication, transportation and housework as well.Nevertheless, living in the 21st century also has its disadvantages. The most serious one is the increasingly polluted environment; air is filled with smog and water is contaminated by iehemicals from factories.Another main disadvantage is the personalization of human relattonships which mostly result from people’s ever-increasing contact with machines and numbers. Still one more disadvantageis the weakening of spiritual values. An undeniable fact is that a large number of people are solely interested in materialistic culture, while neglecting spiritual civilization. Limited by space, we have to skip the examples. In conclusion, although the 21st century has indeed given us a lot of advantages, it may not have made us wiser, because it has also made our earth dirtier, our people less humane, and our spirituali iife poorer, We shpuld continue to enjoy the benefits of technological advancement, however, we mustmake a concerted effort to preserve our natural environment for future generations. Moreover, we should take the time now to make our lives more meaningful in anihcreasingly impersonal, computerized world.二On responsibility .(关于个人责任)We Chinese place a high value on responsibility. It is traditional deal for us Chinese to take care of our parents. We owe them a great deal for the love they give us while we are growing up. It is right, then, when they are getting older with each passing day, we help them and see that they are well cared for. In this way, we give back some of the love and care they have given to us.As loyal Chinese citizens, we must have a strong sense of responsibility to our country. I t is our duty to keep China strong in the eyes of the world. Therefore, we shouldstudy and work hard for China’s strongness which also depends on the advanced science and technology. We must be willing to join the Army and defend our country, would we be threatened by an invader(侵入者). In short, to be a responsible citizen ,we must put our country’s welfare above our own needs. Finally, we must remember that we have a responsibility to the world we live in. It is important that we learn to live in peace with the other nations of the world and to protect our environment. If we carry out these responsibilities, we will be respected (受尊敬的)citizens of our country.三如何看待挑战For thousands of years, people have accepted challenges in different fields. There are not only physical challenges, but also social andintellectual(聪明的) challenges. Some people risk(冒…险) their lives in playing sports to see how well they can do. Others try to make and invent(发明) something to make life easier. They all enjoy challenges. Why do people enjoy these challenges? There are probably many reasons. One is curiosity. The other is the personal feeling of success, of achievement, and nowadays, for some people, it is a business.Today, we still have many challengers before us. Medical science faces the challenges of conquering manydiseases which still attack human beings. Engineers and planners must build new cities, design and produce new kinds of transportation. Scientists must develop new forms of energy. In short, we live in an age of challenges.四My View on Job-Hopping1. 有些人喜欢始终从事一种工作,因为……。
