阅读理解-主旨大意二1、 Imagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and thereafter a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there.Sounds unusual, doesn t it? But it’s not that unrealistic, with the development of China's highspeed railway system. And that’s not all. China has an even greater high-speed railwayplan----to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe.China is negotiating to extend its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore. China has proposed three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore via Vietnam and Malaysia. Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe. If China's plan for the high-speed railway goes forward, people could zip over from London to Beijing in under two days. The new system would still follow China's high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes. China's bullet train(高速客车),the one connecting Wuhan to Guangzhou, already has the world's fastest average speed. It covers 1,069 kilometers in about three hours. Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issuevs that need to be settled, such as safety, rail gauge (轨距),maintenance of railway tracks. So,it's important to pay attention to every detail. But the key issue is really money. China is already spending hundreds of billions yuan on domestic railway expansion. China prefers that the other countries pay in natural resources rather than with capital investment. Resources from those countries could stream into China to sustain development. It’ll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will definitely create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on,not to mention the better communicationamong those countries. For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring somemuch-needed resources, but would also help develop China’s far west. We foresee that in the coming decades, millions of people will migrate to the western regions, where the land is empty and resources unused. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west once and for all. And they'll trade with Central Asian and Eastern European countries.1.China s new high-speed railway plan will be a win-win project because .A.China will get much-needed resources and develop its western regionsB.China and the countries involved will benefit from the project in various waysC.China will develop its railway system and communication with other countriesD.the foreign countries involved will develop their railway transportation. business and tourism2.According to the passage, the greatest challenge to the new high-speed railway plan is .A.technical issuesB.safety of the systemC.financial problemsD.maintenance of railway tracks3.Which of the following words best describes the author's attitude towards China's high-speed railway plan?A.Critical.B.Reserved.C.Doubtful.D.Positive.4.Which of the following might be thebest title for the passage?A.New Railway StandardsB.Big Railway DreamsC.High-speed Bullet TrainsD.International Railway Network2、MUMBAI – Indian commandos battled into the early hours of Friday to end a multiple hostage crisis in Mumbai after suspected Islamic militants killed 125 people across the city.Officials said they had almost totally cleared the luxury Taj Mahal hotel where gunmen had been held up for more than 24 hours.Indian security forces personnel released hostages from Nariman House in Mumbai. Thirty-nine people were rescued from the five-star Oberoi hotel, where "mopping up(清理火场)" operations were still underway, police said.Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the militants had come from "outside the country.”The Press Trust of India said one Pakistani militant had been arrested, although Pakistan's government fiercely denied any involvement.Indian media reports said between six and nine foreign nationals were among the dead in Mumbai -- including a Japanese businessman, an Australian, a Briton , a German and an Italian. At least five gunmen had been shot dead and one captured, police said. Fourteen security personnel were also killed, including the head of Mumbai's anti-terror squad. To draw maximum international attention, the militants used small groups to attack a total of about a dozen targets in India's financial hub , including the main railway station, a hospital and a restaurant popular with tourists. An unknown group calling itself the Deccan Mujahedeen claimed responsibility, with one gunman telling an Indian TV channel by phone that the outfit(装备)was of Indian origin and motivated by the treatment of Indian Muslims.Up to 327 people were reported wounded. The main Bombay Stock Exchange was closed until further notice, as were shops, schools and businesses.Prime Minister Singh said the aim had clearly been to spread panic by choosing high profile(知名度高的)targets and "indiscriminately(随心所欲地)killing foreigners. "Witnesses said the gunmen had been very particular in their choice of hotel hostages. "They said they wanted anyone with British and American passports," said one British guest at the Taj Mahal hotel.1.The following statements are NOT true except ________.A.thirty-nine hostages were rescued from the Taj Mahal HotelB.fourteen gunmen were killed in Nariman HouseC.the target of the attack was obviously on Britons and AmericansD.an American was among the killed foreigners2.The best title of this passage can be _______.A.Hostages Released by Indian CommandosB.Mumbai Under Terrorist AttackC.Islamic Militants Attacking Westerners in MumbaiD.Unfortunate Britons and Americans in Mumbai3、If Confucius(孔子) were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out. While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes. But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In m any ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China. In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually included Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantages of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Westerners philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers. So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.1.The opening paragraph is mainly intended to .A.provide some key facts about ConfuciusB.attract the readers’ interest in the subjectC.show great respect for the ancient thinkerD.prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations2.We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students .A.have a great interest in studying ChineseB.take an active part in Chinese competitionsC.try to get high scores in Chinese examsD.fight for a chance to learn Chinese3.What is the best title for the passage?A.Forgotten Wisdom in AmericaB.Huge Fans of the Chinese LanguageC.Chinese Culture for WesternersD.Old Thinker with a Big Future4.The passage is likely to appear in .A.a biographyB.a history paperC.a newspaperD.a philosophy textbook4、Children as young as ten are becoming dependent on social media for their sense ofself-worth, a major study warned. It found many youngsters(少年)now measure their status by how much public approval they get online, often through “like”. Some change their behavior in real life to improve their image on the web.The report into youngsters aged from 8 to 12 was carried out by Children's Commissioner (专员)Anne Longfield. She said social media firms were exposing children to major emotional risks, with some youngsters starting secondary school ill-equipped to cope with the tremendous pressure they faced online. Some social apps were popular among the children even though they supposedly require users to be at least 13.The youngsters admitted planning trips around potential photo-opportunities and then messaging friends—and friends of friends —to demand “likes” for their online posts. The report found that youngsters felt their friendships could be at risk if they did not respond to social media posts quickly, and around the clock.Children aged 8 to 10 were "starting to feel happy" when others liked their posts. However, those in the 10 to 12 age group were "concerned with how many people like their posts", suggesting a “need” for social recognition that g ets stronger the older they become.Miss Longfield warned that a generation of children risked growing up "worried about their appearance and image as a result of the unrealistic lifestyles they follow on platforms, and increasingly anxious about switching off due to the constant demands of social media. She said: "Children are using social media with family and friends and to play games when they are in primary school. But what starts as fun usage of apps turns into tremendous pressure in real social media interaction at secondary school."As their world expanded. she said, children compared themselves to others online in a way that was "hugely damaging in terms of their self-identity, in terms of their confidence, but also in terms of their ability to develop themselves".Miss Longfield added: "Then there is this push to connect—if you go offline, will you miss something, will you miss out, will you show that you don't care about those people you are following, all of those come together in a huge way at once.""For children it is very, very difficult to cope with emotionally." The Children's Commissioner for England's study—life in Likes—found that children as young as 8 were using social media platforms largely for play. However, the research—involving eight groups of 32 children aged 8 to 12—suggested that as they headed toward their teens, they became increasingly anxious online.By the time they started secondary school—at age 11—children were already far more aware of their image online and felt under huge pressure to ensure their posts were popular, the report found. However, they still did not know how to cope with mean-spirited jokes, or the sense of incompetence they might feel if they compared themselves to celebrities(名人)or more brilliant friends online. The report said they also faced pressure to respond to messages at all hours of the day—especially at secondary school when more youngsters have mobile phones. The Children’s Commissioner said schools and parents must now do more to prepare children for the emotional minefield(雷区)they faced online. And she said social media companies mustalso "take more responsibility". They should either monitor their websites better so that children do not sign up too early, or they should adjust their websites to the needs of younger users.Javed Khan, of children's charity Bamardo's, said: "It's vital that new compulsoryage-appropriate relationship and sex education lessons in England should help equip children to deal with the growing demands of social media.“It’s also hugely important for parents to know which apps their children are using.”1.Why did some secondary school students feel too much pressure?A.They were not provided with adequate equipment.B.They were not well prepared for emotional risks.C.They were required to give quick responses.D.They were prevented from using mobile phones.2.Some social app companies were to blame because .A.they didn't adequately check their users' registrationB.they organized photo trips to attract more youngstersC.they encouraged youngsters to post more photosD.they didn't stop youngsters from staying up late3.Children's comparing themselves to others online may lead to .A.less friendliness to each otherB.lower self-identity and confidenceC.an increase in online cheatingD.a stronger desire to stay online4.According to Life in Likes, as children grew, they became more anxious to .A.circulate their posts quicklyB.know the qualities of their postse mobile phones for playD.get more public approval5.What should parents do to solve the problem?municate more with secondary schools.B.Urge media companies to create safer apps.C.Keep track of children’s use of soc ial media.D.Forbid their children from visiting the web.6.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.The influence of social media on children.B.The importance of social media to children.C.The problem in building a healthy relationship.D.The measure to reduce risks from social media.5 、One of the latest trends(趋势) in American childcare is Chinese au pairs. Au Pair in Stamford, Conn, for example, has got increasing numbers of request for Chinese au pairs from zero to around 4,000 since 2004. And that’s true all across the country."I thought it would be useful for him to learn Chinese at an early age," Joseph Stocke, the managing director of a company, says of his 2-year-old son. "I would at least like to give him the chance to use the language in the future." After only six months of being cared by a 25-year-old woman from China, the boy can already understand basic Chinese daily expressions, his dad says. Li Drake, a Chinese native raising two children in Minnesota with an American husband, had another reason for looking for an au pair from China: She didn't want her children to miss out on their roots. "Because I am Chinese, my husband and I wanted the children to keep exposed to(接触) the language and culture(文化)," she says."Staying with a native speaker is better for children than simply sitting in a classroom," says Suzanne Flynn, a professor in language education of children. But parents must understand that just one year with an au pair is unlikely to produce wonders. Complete mastery demands continued learning until the age of 10 or 12."The popularity of au pairs from China has been strengthened by the increasing numbers of American parents who want their children to learn Chinese. Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers concluded that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal. After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym.In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity—or extreme overweight—among adults is only 6%.However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17%—and is growing.1.In what way are the French different from Americans accordingto Dr. Joseph Mercola?A.They go shopping at supermarkets more frequently.B.They squeeze eating between the other daily activities.C.They regard eating as a key part of their life style.D.They usually eat too much canned and frozen food.2.This text is mainly about the relationship between _________.A.Americans and the FrenchB.life style and obesityC.children and adultsD.fast food and overweight3.This text is mainly developed .A.by contrastB.by spaceC.by processD.by classification4.Where does this text probably come from?A.A TV interview.B.A food advertisement.C.A health report.D.A book review.答案以及解析1答案及解析:答案:1.A; 2.C; 3.D; 4.B解析:1.根据第5段第5句话“It’ll be a win-win project. 阅读理解:主旨大意(二)AYou might think that “global warming” means nothing more than a rise in the world's temperature. But rising sea levels caused by it have resulted in the first evacuation (撤离) of an island nation. The citizens of Tuvalu will have to leave their homeland.During the 20th century, sea level rose 812 inches. As a result, Tuvalu has experienced lowland flooding of salt water that has polluted the country's drinking water.Paani Laupepa, a Tuvaluan government official, reported to the Earth Policy Institute that the nation suffered an unusually high number of fierce storms in the past ten years. Many scientists connect higher surface water temperatures resulting from global warming to greater and more damaging storms.Laupepa expressed dissatisfaction with the United States for refusing to sign the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement calling for industrialized nations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions (减少温室效应气体排放), which are a main cause of global warming. “By refusing to sign the agreement, the US has effectively taken away the freedom of future generations of Tuvaluans to live where their forefathers have lived for thousands of years,” Laupepa told the BBC.Tuvalu has asked Australia and New Zealand to allow the gradual move of its people to both countries.Tuvalu is not the only country that is vulnerable (易受影响的) to rising sea levels. Maumoon Gayoon, president of the Maldives, told the United Nations that global warming has made his country of 311,000 an “endangered nation”.篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。

When an animal is under attack, it can run away or fight back.. Plants certainly cannot run away, and they lack teeth and claws. But plants can defend themselves by using both physical and chemical means. Some plants have their own ways to keep animals away. For example, the leaves of the holly plant have sharp spines (刺) that discourage grass-eating animals. Holly leaves on lower branches have more spines than leaves on upper branches. This is because the lower leaves are easier for most animals to reach. Some plants, such as the oak tree, have thick and hard leaves that are difficult for animals to eat. Some grasses may contain a sandy material; eating such grasses wears down the animal's teeth. Many plants also have chemical defenses. Some plants produce chemicals that taste bitter or cause an unpleasant reaction. Some plants may fight against an attack by increasing the production of these chemicals. When a caterpillar (毛虫) bites a tobacco leaf, the leaf produces a chemical messenger. This messenger sends to the roots the information to produce more nicotine. The higher levels of nicotine discourage the caterpillar. Many plants depend on both physical and chemical defenses. A certain plant in China, for instance, has prickly (多刺的) leaves, and each prickle contains poisonous venom (毒液) A single experience with this kind of plant will teach an animal to stay away from it in the future.8. Most of us don' t know the reasons anymore but people today follow them because they are good fun.Today the bride (新娘) carries flowers but long ago she carried strong-smelling grass. This was to frighten away the evil spirits and to cover the smell of people who do not wash often. People also used to believe that the bride brought good luck, so they would try to get something from her. Today, the bride will offer the guests some good luck by throwing the flowers to them after the wedding. It is said that if you catch the flowers, you will be the next one to get married. Of course, many of the single girls at a wedding try to catch the flowers. In early times, the bridesmaids (伴娘) and the bride all wore similar dresses. This was to confuse the evil spirits. Now bridesmaids still wear similar dresses but the bride wears a different dress that is often white. Many brides wear veils (面纱) over their faces. This comes from a time when the young couple was not allowed to see each other before the wedding. The families were afraid that the groom might not like the bride. So he was only allowed to lift her veil just before the wedding. By this time it was too late to refuse to marry her.Brides often wear "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue". In earlier times, if the bride didn' t do this, she felt she would be in danger from the evil spirits. Wearing "something old " represents the journey between being single and being married. "Something new" represents the change from being a child to being an adult. "Something borrowed" means if you borrow something from a happily married couple, it will bring you good luck. He has taught others that great truth: What we see will come to be.Some see themselves as they are, others as they can be.
