Recently I and other Red Cross volunteers met a group of victims from Hurricane Katrina. We were there, as mental health professionals, to offer "psychological first aid" and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter, we were greeted with a burst of gratitude (感激) from the first person we met. I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn’t really done anything yet.I first realized the powe r of presence many years ago when a friend’s mother passed away unexpectedly. I had received a call saying she had just passed away. I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didn’t want to intrude (打搅) on this very personal period of sadness. I was torn about what to do. Another friend with me then said, "Just go. Just be there." I did, and I will never regret it.Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others. Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS — related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others’ presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive. In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. In it, none of us are truly alone. It is not only something we give to others but also changes me for the better.1.Why were the hurricane victims grateful to the author?A. He built shelters for them.B. He gave immediate first aid to them.C. He came to stay with them.D. He brought mental health professionals.2.What did the author do when his friend’s mother passed away?A. He hesitated over whether to go.B. He went to his friends’ at once.C. He knew what to do instantly.D. He decided not to disturb.3.What does the underlined word "solemn" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Heavy but warm.B. A little sad but cosy.C. Relaxing and delightful.D. Very serious and unhappy.4.What has the author learned from his experience?A. A friend in need is a friend indeed.B. Being present can make a big difference.C. The family harmony is the happiest thing in life.D. Being a volunteer can make one’s life more significant【文章大意】本文是一篇记叙文。

Prepackaged, mass-produced snack foods are hugely popular in grocery stores around the world. Many people are accustomed to choosing snack foods in grocery stores. The first problem with packaged snack foods like cookies, crackers, and other bite-sized options is that they are often loaded with unhealthy materials. The reason for this is fairly easy to understand. Mass-produced foods need to be uniform in color, taste and so on. In order to achieve this uniformity, snack food producers use sugar, salt, and other chemical preservatives (防腐剂) and coloring materials in large amounts. These materials contribute to a rather unhealthy food.In addition to requiring uniformity of taste and appearance, mass-produced snack foods like potato chips and candies need to be shelf stable. Preservatives and complex packaging make products shelf stable, but this stability and non-perish ability (抗腐性) often come at the expense of nutrition. One reason that pre-made snacks are so popular in grocery stores is their prices. Food producers can keep costs down by using established production facilities and processes to quicklyproduce a huge amount of food. Shoppers are drawn to what they see at low prices.People who are interested in improving the quality of their snacking can use magazines, books, and the Internet to discover a lot of healthy snacking tips and ideas. Even television shows about health and food sometimes talk about healthy snacking alternatives. Some healthy snacks, like fresh fruit, require no preparation at all.Once people are aware of the drawbacks of clearly cheap and easy snack foods, they can start turning to better options. Soon, perhaps, the old and unhealthy snack options will no longer be profitable for food producers.Title: Prepackaged, mass-produced snack foodsFactPrepackaged, mass-produced snack foods are well (71) ________ aroundthe world.(72) _______•Having preservatives, coloring materials and (73)________ packaging • Having uniformity of (74)________ and appearance• Being shelf stable• Being at low (75) ________Problems • (76) ________ unhealthy materials• Being shelf stable and non-perishable leading to some nutrition (77) ________Measures•Discover healthy snacking tips and ideas by (78)________ magazines, books, the Internet and television shows. Conclusion• People will turn to better options once (79) _______ the drawbacks of cheap and easy snack foods.•The old and unhealthy snack foods will no longer bring (80) _______ to food producers.【参考答案】任务型阅读71. received 72. more energy than walking down a sidewalk—because the weight of your body pushes into the sand.It turns out that the same thing is true for vehicles driving on roads.“The weight o f the vehicles creates a very shallow indentation(凹痕) in the pavement—like it’s continuously driving up a very shallow hill,” said Jeremy Gregory,a scientist at MIT.He modeled with his teammates how much energy could be saved and how much greenhouse gases could be avoided by simply hardening the nation’s roads and highways. And they found that hardening 10 percent of the nation’s roads every year could prevent the emission(排放) equal to 440 megatons of carbon dioxide over the neount is equal to how much CO2you’d spare the planet by keeping a billion barrels of oil in the ground or by growing 7 billion trees for a decade. It reduces 0.5% of projected transportation emissions over that time period. As for how to harden roads,Gregory says you could combine small amounts of certain fibre with high technology into paving materials.Or you could pave the roads with specially-made concrete, which is harder than ordinary construction materials. This system could also be a way to shave carbon emissions without some of th e usual barriers.“Usually, when it comes toreducing emissions in the transportation sector, you’re talking about changing policies related to vehicles and also driver behavior, which involves(牵涉) millions and millions of people—as opposed to changing the way we design and preserve our pavements. That’s just on the order of thousands of people who are working in food goes right into the garbage can.Eight to ten percent of global greenhouse gas emissions(排放物) are related to food waste, according to a report by t he UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.“When you throw away anegg or a sandwich,” says Yvette Cabrera, food waste director at the Natural Resources Defense Council(NRDC),“you’re also throwing away all the resources that went into producing those things.”They include not only all the water, land, and fertilizer(肥料) that went into producing that food, but also the massive amounts of fossil fuels used to power the farms, transport the food, and create the packaging. Then there’s the issue of what happens to food after it’s thrown out.More food ends up in ndfills than any other type of trash.Food rotting in landfills produces methane(甲烷),a greenhouse gas that’s roughly 25 times more powerful at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, which is produced by burning fossil fuels.Food waste is a difficult problem to solve, though,in part because it happens for different reasons depending on the country. In developing nations,40 percent of food is lost before it ever reaches people’s homes, because many of those countries lack the technology and tools to preserve food. It’s another story in wealthier countries, where most of the food is wasted in people’s kitchens.Americans, for example, throw out a quarter of their groceries each year,on average, according to the NRDC.That’s like going to the grocery store, leaving with four bags of groceries, and then throwing one of them into the garbage before you get home.12.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.The problem of food waste.B.The awareness of food saving.C.The necessity of food diversity.D.The ways of food preservation.13.What does the underlined
