In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.Perhaps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy( 书法)to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them. But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spendmore time learning how to write. In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six-year-olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher’s examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. ―If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?‖ we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin. ―The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,‖ she reasons. ―Students must learn now so they don’t forget wh en they grow up.‖ says the teacher.4. What can we learn about the Character Hero?A. It’s open to people of all ages and all walks.B. It’s the most-viewed TV programs in China.C. It aims to spread Chinese culture to the world.D. It draws great public attention across the country.5. Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?A. Chinese people don’t refer to dictionaries very often.B. Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.C. Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.D. Chinese people needn’t write by hand as often with the help of technology.6. According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is_________.A. necessary for adults to survive in ChinaB. a requirement made by the Education MinistryC. helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture aliveD. an ability to be developed only when you are students7. Where does this text probably come from?A. A news report.B. A science report.C. An advertisement.D. Children’s literature.CThe H1Nl virus has been spreading worldwide,it is important for us to know how to control it.Please pay attention to the following points:1.Don’t touch your face.Above all, keep your hands away from your eyes, mouth and nose, all of which serve pathways(途径) for the viruses(病毒) to enter your body.2.Wash your hands. If you have to touch your face, wash your hands, getting under the fingernails for 20 to 30 seconds with hot soap and water before.Soaps with surfactants(表面活性剂) can deal with flu viruses.3.Cover your nose and mouth. When someone sneezes or coughs, liquid(液体) drops with flu viruses as far as three feet through the air and land on your nose and mouth,so it’s best to keep at leas t an arm’s length distance when talking to someone who shows signs of infection(感染).In order to protect others, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue(纸巾) when you cough or sneeze, and clean your hands afterward.Viruses can live for hours,or even longer when on the skin or other surfaces such as keyboards.4.Consider buying a mask in case you need it in the future. Some research suggests that masks reduce the risk of getting the flu viruses by as much as 80%.But it also suggests that if you don’t wash han ds,the mask doesn’t work well.So wash your hands and use the mask, especially wearing face masks in crowded places is also useful.8.The article mainly tells ________.A.the H1N1 virus has been spreading world-wideB.how to control the H1N1 virusC.cover your nose and mouthD.everyone should buy a mask in the future9. Whether that is good or bad, we can’t really say, but for the two of us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle. On April 22, 2011, we decided to go green every single day for an entire year. My wife and I decided to educate people about how they could go green in their lives and hoped we could show people all the green things that could be done to help the environment. Music has the ability to change a child’s mind, soul and body. Because music can create deep feelings and it can have a calming effect on a stressful child. According to the Profiles of the SAT Program, students who take part in music scored much higher on the standardized test than those not involved in a music program.Children can benefit from many types of music. Nursery songs, songs of nature, holiday songs and religious songs all teach children different things about the world around them. These songs should be incorporated (使并入) into a child’s life. In this way, music becomes more than just rhythms and sounds---it becomes a means for learning about different aspects of life.Music helps develop a child’s intellectual abilities. On the left side of the brain are areas responsible for reasoning and language acquisition (知识技能的获得). These are areas that music can influence. Therefore, music can help children process language more efficiently. As a result, a child’s intelligence is improved through music.Different styles of music can help children understand the culture of others. Each culture has a unique style of music. For example, a child who is exposed to music from AFRIC, India, China, and Europe will come to understand and respect those cultures as well as enjoy the difference forms of musical creativity. This also helps children understand how music can reach across the world and unite cultures.Music has the ability to produce skills within children that will benefit them throughout their lifetime. Success in life requires such skills as problem-solving, creative thinking, risk-taking, effective communication and good teamwork. Participation in music requires study skills and communication skills.9. Why is music able to influence children’s mind and soul?A. Because music can calm down stressful children.B. AHaving a large collection of books at home doesn’t really mean that you are a pe rson who loves reading. They may be got from your father and your father’s father or they can just impress people around you with the fact that you are a person of culture. From my point of view, reading is very important in our lives. For example, reading is a means of gaining knowledge in different areas. It can help us have a great imagination and it makes things easier when it comes to making compositions on different themes. It gives you the possibility to speak about science, even if you don’t work in this field; you can express your opinion about a political event at least, because you have read something about that.Reading gives us the possibility to enter the world of imagination. We can dream in the world of the rich or imagine what life will be like in the future.Sometimes, we compare ourselves with the people in the stories we read and they can give us some clues to solve our problems and tell us what to do in certain situations. Books are based on real life. Even if writers are considered to be somehow different from common people, they often face the same problems as we all do and suffer like us, too.In short, I would like to say that reading is the perfect means of enriching our culture, expressing correctly and having a rich vocabulary, being able to understand different fields and really being considered to be an erudite person.1.In the writer’s opinion, some people have many books at home only to.A.make their houses look more beautifulB. show that their fathers are wealthyC. impresses others with the fact that they love reading very muchD. show that they are rich enough to have such a large collection of books 2.We can learn from the fourth paragraph that .A. people in stories are always unbelievableB. what we read can be useful in our daily lifeC. writers are good at dealing with problems in lifeD. writers often have different experiences in life3.The underlined word "erudite" in the last paragraph probably means " ".A. learnedB. enthusiasticC. smartD. creative4. In her poem, Elizabeth tells a storyabout how she desperately loves someone but must behave as if she does not. These actions cause her great pain and confusion. After a while she becomes resistant to her feelings until she discovers she can no longer hide them. She is faced with denying her duty or denying her heart. As she talks through her feelings, I have the impression of someone dealing with the death of a loved one. At first, she is in denial and then becomes somewhat angry. Through the second stanza (节)she moves on to feelings of sadness and regret. Finally, in the third stanza she completes this cycle of copy by resigning herself to her feelings. In her hopes of finding closure, she ends by pleading, "Or let me live with some more sweet content, /or die, and so forget what love e’er meant."In On Monsieur’s Departure, the reader discovers a woman who is apparently distraught (发狂的)over her feelings for a lo ver she cannot get. Due to Elizabeth’s royal position as queen and the duties that she must uphold, it is no wonder that she would not be permitted to choose any suitor of her liking. She must choose according to what will be suitable to her position on the throne. Elizabeth has to put the concerns of her government and the people she rules ahead of her own wishes. This must have been a terrible burden on her and must have brought on a feeling of isolation (孤独)as well. She did try to find some small escape from these pressures and personal conflicts (冲突)by writing poetry. Through reading On Monsieur’s Departure, the reader is able to grasp the inner struggle Elizabeth has over her feelings for this lover and the knowledge that she cannot have him.8.Why does the author of On Monsieur’s Departure feel sad and regretted?A. She loses the one she loves.B. She is shouldering a heavy burden and is too busy.C. She can’t choose the one she loves.D. She is turned down by her lover.9.Which of the following is true about Elizabeth?A. She hates her royal position as queen.B. She must put her duty above her love.C. She is not suitable to be queen.D. She prefers love to power.10.Elizabeth wrote poetry probably to .A. escape from her pressures and troubled feelingsB. sing praise for true loveC. enrich her personal lifeD. express her love for someone 11.The passage is probably taken from .A.a personal journalB.a newspaper storyC.a research paperD.a poetry reviewDI moved into a new house in July. Since then I have met a few of my neighbors who are very nice people. For Christmas,I thought I would do something nice for each of the neighbors I know. There were nine neighbors whom I knew by name or spoke with often when I was out in my yard. I knew which houses they lived in.I decided to add one more to my list. This lady I decided to add lives down the street from me. I meet her every morning walking to work as I drive down the street. She always smiles to me. But I had no idea who she was and which house she lived in.I planned to make small fruit baskets and leave them on my neighbor’s front porches(门廊)on Christmas Eve. I signed the cards:“Happy Holidays from 5104 Northumberland Road.”I saved the last for the friendly lady. I finally decided on a house where I met her each morning and guessed that it was hers.My neighbors really appreciated the baskets and would tell me as they saw me in the yard or they would call, and a couple even came by to thank me. This morning I found a small note in the mailbox. It was addressed simply:Resident,5104 Northumberland Road. The thank—you card really caught me by surprise. I opened it and read the message,“Thank you for the lovely fruit basket you left on our porch. It was very thoughtful. Richard Kelly passed away last week. He talked a lot about how nice it was that someone remembered him in his time of illness. He really appreciated it.”I had no idea who Richard Kelly was and that he had been seriously ill. I had left that nice lady’s basket on his porch by mistake. I wanted to say sorry, but that would be wrong. I believe that Mr. Kelly was meant to have that basket becausehe was dying. I hate that the nice lady did not get to receive a fruit basket on Christmas, but I believe if she knew what had happened, she would be happy. I feel pleased to have helped Richard Kelly’s last days be more cheerful.12.How many Christmas gifts did the author intend to send?A. Nine.B. Eight.C. Ten.D. Eleven.13.Where did the friendly lady live?A. She lived at the end of Northumberland Road.B. Her address was 5104 Northumberland Road.C. She was thought to share a house with Mr. Kelly.D. But it's not that unrealistic, with the development of China’s high-speed railway system. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and finally Eastern Europe.China is planning to extend(延长) its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore. If China’s plan for the high-speed railway goes forward, people could rush from London to Beijing within two days. The new system would still follow China’s high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes.China’s bullet train(高速列车), the one connecting Wuhan to Guangzhou, already has the World’s fastest average speed. It covers 1,069 kilometers in about three hours.Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issues that need to be settled, such as safety and maintenance(保养) of railway tracks. So, it’s important to pay attention to every detail. But the key issue is really money. China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on longer railway constructionChina prefers that the other countries provide natural resources rather than financial investment. Resources from those countries could flood into China to support development. It’ll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will certainly create more opportunities for business, to urism and so on, not to mention the better communication among those countries. For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop China’s far west. We predict that in the coming decades, millions of people will move to the western parts, where the land is empty and resources unused. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the wes t. And they’ll trade with Central Asian and Eastern European countries.8. According to the passage, the greatest challenge to the new high-speed railway plan is.A. financial problemsB. safety of the systemC. technical issuesD. m aintenance of railway tracks9. China and the countries involved will get much-needed resourcesB. China and the countries involved will benefit from the project in various waysC. Chin a will develop its railway system and communication with other countriesD. the foreign countries involved will develop their railway transportation, business and tourism11. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?A. International Railway NetworkB. High-speed Bullet TrainsC. Big Railway DreamsD.New Railway StandardsDI heard many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling(叛逆). I suggested they recall their own teenage years. At that age they would like to be growing away from parents. They preferred to stand on their own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of going out fighting bravely on their own, most of them are clutching (紧握) at one another’s hands for reassurance. They declare they want to dress as they like. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up gathering around listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in a similar way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon (蚕茧) into a larger cocoon. It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this create a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go for it. Find yourse lf. Be yourself. Popularity will come —with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really matters.12. This passage is aimed at _______.A. people who try to understand and respect each otherB. readers who try to be popular with people aroundC. parents who try to control and guide their childrenD. teenagers who try to seek for their real selves13. 并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑.AWhen I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that my life has its problems too.One big disadvantage is money. It costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment. Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising—and , what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is , when you are in your teens or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.1. What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child?A. Staying on the farm.B. Moving to the countryside.C. Leaving home for the city.D. Running away from the school.2. Which of the following is true about the writer?A. He is very old now.B. He is in good health.C. He prefers driving a car.D. He lives in the city now.3. In the passage, the writer tries to __________.A. express his opinions about way of lifeB. describe his life in the countrysideC. show an interest in the outside worldD. persuade the reader to live in the city4. How is the passage mainly developed?A. By inferring.B. By comparing.C. By listing examples.D. By giving explanations.BAbout twenty of us had been fortunate enough to receive invitations to a film-studio(影棚)to take part in a crowd-scene. Although our "act" would last only for a short time, we could see quite a number of interesting things. We all stood at the far end of the studio as workmen prepared the scene, setting up trees at the edge of a winding path. Very soon, bright lights were turned on and the big movie camera was wheeled into position. The director shouted something to the camera operator and then went to speak to the two famous actors nearby. Since it was hot in the studio, it came as a surprise to us to see one of the actors put on a heavy overcoat and start walking along the path. A big fan began blowing tiny white feathers down on him, and soon the trees were covered in "snow". Two more fans were turned on, and a "strong wind" blew through the trees. The picture looked so real that it made us feel cold. The next scene was a complete contrast (对比). The way it was filmed was quite unusual. Pictures in front taken on an island in the Pacific were shown on a glass screen (幕). An actor and actress stood of the scene so that they looked trick like this, palm trees, sandy beaches, as if they were at the water's edge on an island. By a simple and blue, clear skies had been brought into the studio!Since it was our turn next, we were left wondering what scene would be prepared for us. For a full three minutes in our lives we would be experiencing the excitement of being film "stars"!5. Who is the author?A. A cameraman.B. .A film director.C. A crowd-scene actor.D. A workman for scene setting.6. What made the author feel cold?A. The heavy snowfall.B. The man-made scene.C. The low temperature.D. The film being shown.7. What would happen in the "three minutes" mentioned in the last paragraph?A. A new scene would be filmed.B. More stars would act in the film.C. The author would leave the studio.D. The next scene would be prepared.CCoolest Hotels in the WorldArtau Aragon TowersThe Ariau Amazon Towers hotel lets you sleep in a tree house. Experts from across many fields are full of advice on just how to present your best performance in an interview using conscious (自觉的) body language choices. While many of these experts say there is a “secret” system for making the most of an interview, the reality is that most of them focus on a few general types of behavior that have the greatest effect during a job interview.Entering the interview location — Your walk should be active and confident. Keep your shoulders straight, head up, and make eye contact with the people around you. Maintain (保持) an active facial expression and be confident when shaking hands and greeting people to whom you are introduced.During the interview — Sit in a straight and attentive posture. Never let your shoulders drop or your head hang down, but rather keep your head up and make eye contact with the interviewers. Don’t play with any papers or notes you have in front of you, and don’t lean (倚靠) your arms heavily on the table. Keep your body position open and make eye contact while listening to and answering questions.Leaving the interview location—No matter how you feel about your performance during the interview, carry yourself with confidence till you leave the interview location. Be confident when shaking hands and making eye contact as you say goodbye, and keep your body posture straight as you walk all the way to your car.Remember, the more you make active and confident body language a part of your daily life, the more it becomes a habit that follows you wherever you go.12. AHobbs was an orphan(孤儿). He worked in a factory and every day he got a little money. Hard work made him thin and weak. He wanted to borrow a lot of money to learn to paint pictures, but he did not think he could pay off the debts. One day a lawyer said to him, “One thousand dollars, and here is the money.”As Hobbs took the package of notes, he was very dumbfounded. He didn't know where the money came from and how to spend it. He said to himself, “I could go to find a hotel and live like a rich man for a few days; or I give up my work in the factory and do what I'd like to do: painting pictures.I could do that for a few weeks, but what would I do after that? I should have lost my place in the factory and have no money to live on. If it were a little less money, I would buy a new coat, or a radio, or give a dinner to my friends. If it were more, I could give up the work and pay for painting pictures. But it's too much for one and too little for the other.”“Here is the reading of your uncle's will(遗嘱)”,said the lawyer, “telling what is to be done with this money after his death. I must ask you to remember one point. Your uncle has said you must bring me a paper showing exactly what you did with his money, as soon as you have spent it.”“Yes, I see. I'll do that,” said the young man.1.Hobbs wanted to borrow money to ________.A. learn to paint picturesB. work abroadC. pay off the debtsD. study abroad.2.What does the underlined word “dumbfounded”(in Paragraph 2) probably mean?A.Satisfied B.Frightened C.Surprised D.Excited3.With the money he got, at first Hobbs ________.A.planned to have a happy life for a few daysB.decided to give up his work in the factoryC.was to give a dinner to his friendsD.had no idea what to do4.Hobbs was asked to ________.A.tell the lawyer what was to be done with the moneyB.read his uncle's willC.tell the lawyer what he did with the money after spending itD.buy some picturesBIn ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics(策略).One tactic involves where to display the goods. Foe example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food later in their trip. In department stores, the women’s shoe section is generally next to the women’s cosmetics(化妆品) section:while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over cosmetics they might want to try later.Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers’ senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wines went up.When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decisions in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $10 million houses.5. Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section?A. To save customers times.B. To show they are high quality foods.C. To sell them at discount pricesD. To help sell junk food.6. According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy?A. Opening the store early in the morning.B. Filling the store with the smell of fresh breadC. Inviting customers to play music.D. Displaying British wines next to French ones.7. What is the California builder’s story intended to prove?A. A good first impression increases salesB. The more expensive the house is, the better it sells.C. An ocean view is much to the customers’ taste.D. The house structure is a key factor customers consider.8. What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To show dishonest business practices.B. To report researches on customer behavior.C. To introduces how businesses have grown from the past.D. If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These "Polar Bears" are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members ofthe Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group. This is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter. The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system (循环系统)because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming. The main benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim year-round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says. "When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away."12. The members of the Polar Bear Club must meet the following requirements exceptthat __________.A. they must reach the age of 60B. they should be easy to make friends withC. they must swim outdoors at least 8 times in the four cold monthsD. they must agree to swim outdoors from November through February13. The Polar Bears like to swim all the year round, for __________.A. they can remain youngB. it is an easy way to keep the body warm in winterC. they find it enjoyable and interestingD. they might meet fewer troubles in life15. Software on smart phones and computers allows usersto type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them. But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?” we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin. “T he ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,” she reasons. “Students must learn now so they don’t forget when they grow up.”says the teacher.4.
