There now are about 4 billion of us on earth. That could reach 6 billion by the end of the century and 11 billion in a further 75 years. Experts have long been concerned about such a growth. Where will we find the food, water, jobs, houses, schools and health care for all these people?A major new study shows that the situation may be changing. A large and rapid drop in the world’s birth rate had taken place during the past 10 years. Families generally are smaller now than they were a few years ago. It is happening in both developing and industrial nations.Researchers said they found a number of reasons for this. More men and women are waiting longer to get married and are using birth control devices and methods to prevent to delay pregnancy. More women are going to school or working at jobs away from home instead of having children. And more governments, especially in developing nations, now support family planning programs to reduce population growth.China is one of the nations that have made great progress in reducing its population growth. China has already cut its rate of population growth by about one half since 1970.Each Chinese family is now urged to have no more than one child. And the hope is to reach a zero population growth with the total number of births equaling the total number of deaths by the year 2000.Several nations in Europe already have fewer births than deaths. Experts said that these nations could face a serious shortage of workers in the future. And the persons who are working could face much higher taxes to help support the growing number of retired people.51. Suddenly he saw the owner, with a group of friends, coming towards him in the wood. There was a look of anger on Lord Northwood’s face as he caught sight of the gun in Pat’s hands. Pat’s heart sank with fear, but he saw there was no hope of escape, so he walked boldly up to the company said to Lord Northwood, “Good morning, sir, and what has brought you out so early this morning?”Lord Northwood, rather surprised, said he and his friends were taking a little exercise to get an appetite for their breakfast. Then, looking at Pat with suspicion, he said, “But why are you out so early in the morning?”“Well, sir,” said Pat, “I just came out to see if I could get a breakfast for my appetite.” The whole crowd burst into laughter at Pat’s ready wit, and with a smile Lord Northwood walked on , leaving Pat to try his luck with the rabbits.56. It is the most traditional of American holidays. The first Thanksgiving was held in Massachusetts in 1621. After a year of great hardship, the Pilgrim colonists wanted to give thanks to God for their first harvest. They invited their Indian friends to join them in a big feast. Today the holiday is still celebrated as a day for giving thanks. It is a day of family reunion and it is customary to invite friends to share the meal. In some large cities, there are carnival parades for children. In other cities, there are important football games that are played on Thanksgiving Day.In my family, we always go to my grandmother’s house on Thanksgiving Day. All my aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and nieces gather for a family homecoming. We always invite some friends to join us. Everyone is glad to see everyone else and there is a very busy exchange of gossip. The women soon disappear into the kitchen to help my grandmother prepare the dinner. The men, meanwhile, settle down to watch a football game on television or to discuss business or politics. If the weather permits, some of the more athletic men go outside to play ball with the children. At about four o’clock we all sit down to dinner. My grandfather gives thanks for the blessing we have received and then he starts to carve the turkey. We always have the traditional dinner of stuffed turkey, cranberry sauce, apple cider, sweet potatoes, chestnuts, and pumpkin pie. After dinner, no one can move and we all sit around and talk, play word games, or tell jokes until it is time to go home. It is always difficult to leave because Thanksgiving Day is one of the few days of the year when the entire family gets together.61. Thanksgiving Day _____.A became traditional in America in the 16th centuryB has long been a popular holiday in the WestC has long been a national holiday for the AmericansD is a holiday only in a few states in the United states62. Why?A It is their custom.B They have just eaten to much.C People want to sit around and talk.D The day offers a good chance for people to meet each other.Passage FourI hear many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At this age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out on their own, most of them are clutching at one another’s hands for reassurance. They say they want to dress as they please, but all of them wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music, but all of them end up huddled round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in this and that way is that the crowd is doing it.It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and go his or her own way. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come--- with the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.66. In this passage the writer wants to tell ______.A. readers how to be popular with peopleB. teenagers how to learn to decide things for themselvesC. parents how to control and guide their childrenD people how to understand and respect each other67. According to the writer, many teenagers think they are brave enough to act on their own, but in fact, most of them _____.A. have a lot of difficulty understanding each otherB. lack firm trust in themselvesC. dare to deal with problems by themselvesD. are very much afraid of getting lost68. Which of the following statements is not true according to the passage?A. There is no popularity that really counts.B. What many parents are doing is in fact preventing their children from findingtheir own paths.C. It is not bad for a teenager to disagree with his or her classmates.D. most teenagers say that they want to do what they like to, but they are actuallydoing the same.69. The writer thinks that advertisements _____.A. give new directions in musicB. make all teenagers wear the same clothesC. have a great influence on teenagersD. help industry develop a teenage market70. During the teenage years, one should learn to ____.A. be different from others in as many ways as possibleB. get into the right season and become popularC. find one’s real selfD. learn from others around you四、完型填空题(每小题0.5分,共10分)(此题答案涂在答题卡上)Directions: There are 20 blanks in the following passage.
