Reading AloudUnit1She was a small woman, old and wrinkled. When she started washing for us, she was already past seventy. All the old women in out street had bent backs and leaned on sticks when they walked. But this washwoman, small and thin as she was, possessed a strength that came from generations of peasant forebears. Mother would count out to her a bundle of laundry that had accumulated over several weeks. She would then lift the bundle, put it on her narrow shoulders, and carry it the long way home. She would bring the laundry back about two weeks later. My mother had never been so pleased with any washwoman. Yet she charged no more than the others. She was a real fine. Mother always had her money ready, because it was too far for the woman to come a second time.count out <非正>逐一数出,大声数; <非正>不把…
Unit2Though he’d portrayed (描述)himself as a fun-loving ,adventurous person online, all that he wanted to do was come home from work and sit in his recliner(躺椅), reading the paper. He rarely wanted to go out and do anything. As I ran up my credit cards on food, restaurants, clothing, fuel and bills, he made it sound as though he was paying for everything. After only nearly three weeks, one night, we had a huge fight, and l began packing my things. Half of me thought that he would --and l wanted him to --stop me. Half of me just wanted all of this to be over. That night as l tried to discuss my leaving with him, he fell asleep in the middle of the conversation, and sealed the fate of our relationship. The next morning l left for home, among accusations that l did indeed “screw him over”that l hurt him, that it was all my fault, that he should never have trusted me ... etc.
When l was a young man, l was once invited to dine at the home of a distinguished New Work gentleman. After dinner out hostess led us to an enormous hall, where an army of servants was arranging chairs in long rows. Up front, leaning against the wall, were musical instruments. Apparently l was facing an evening of chamber music.I sighed. Music meant nothing to me; l am virtually tone-deaf. So l did what l always do when trapped: l sat down, closed my ears from the inside and submerged myself in a sea of thought.
Unit4Now that Osceola ‘s retried, she sits most of the day and read the Bible. That is, when she’s not out getting awards! Every time l go visit, she has a new award. She’s even gone to the White House. She is so happy and proud, though not at all conceited. We had to talk her into getting a VCR so she could tape the programs and see herself on TV --she just sits and smiles.Osceola gave me much more than a scholarship. She taught me about the gift of giving. Now l know there are good people in the world who do good things. She worked her whole life and gave to others, and in turn she has inspired me to give back when l can. Eventually l plan to add to her scholarship fund.I want to give Osceola the family she’s always wanted, so l ‘ve adopted her as another grandma. She even calls me her granddaughter. And when l graduate from USM, she’ll be sitting in the audience between my mother and my grandmother right where she belongs.
During this time, l realized that no matter what life throws our way, personal growth never stops. It comes from within, and needs only to be challenged in order to surface. It is entirely possible to step out of one’s comfort zone to learn something new. My experience of going back to school ended up being far more valuable than just acquiring a diploma. The second thing l did to improve my inner self was to reevaluate my life. It used to be filled with endless, and sometimes meaningless, events. Now, instead of working towards materialistic things and personal glorification, my heart and life are firmly entwined around people l care for.from within从…
