高中英语学习材料(灿若寒星*制作整理)Unit 2 Fit for lifePart One Welcome to the unit话题信息导入一、阅读短文并根据内容判断正误Researchers at Stanford University in California say acupuncture can be an effective weapon against depression in pregnant women.Depression can pose serious health risks to mother and baby, according to Rachel Manber, a Stanford University psychiatry professor. "Depression is associated with suffering, can be associated with suicide " She adds that depression has been linked to babies who are more difficult to console.Psychological counseling is commonly used to treat depression in pregnancy. But many women avoid taking antidepressants while they're pregnant because of safety concerns. That makes finding an alternative treatment important.Acupuncture has been used to treat other medical conditions during pregnancy, like pain and nausea. It's also used to treat depression in other patients. Manber and her colleagues wanted to find out if the technique could be used to ease depression during pregnancy as well. They recruited pregnant women who suffered from major depressive disorders for a study. "We then randomized them to receive eight weeks of treatment with one of three treatments. One of the treatments was the acupuncture that we have tested for depression." The two other groups, who received massage therapy and acupuncture treatments not known to ease depression, were used as controls. After eight weeks, the women were tested to see if their symptoms of depression remained. "What we found is that women who received the acupuncture for depression had a greater reduction in symptom severity and a greater proportion of women have responded to treatment than the control groups," Manber says.Researchers found acupuncture to be about as effective as the current treatment approaches, counseling and drugs. "We found 63 percent of the women who received the acupuncture for depression ended up responding to treatment, which is really at the high end of response rates for treatment for depression in outpatients."Manber says the results must be independently replicated, and scientists need to better understand the mechanisms of how acupuncture therapy works.()1. Back pain affects one in three British adults, costs the country over £5billion every year and is notoriously difficult to treat. But now Britain's National Health Service (NHS) will be offering a new solution: acupuncture. The ancient Chinese needle therapy has been around in the UK for many years, but this is the first time it has been officially endorsed by the NHS's advisory body, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).Traditionally, doctors in the UK have advised back pain sufferers to stay active, do stretching exercises and take painkillers when necessary. In more serious cases some people are given X-ray treatment or injections with therapeutic substances.NICE, however, say there is evidence that acupuncture may be more effective than expensive X-rays or injections, so patients who have been suffering for over six weeks should be given a choice. As an alternative to acupuncture, patients will be able to opt for either a course of spinal manipulation, or a series of special exercise sessions. In the UK, acupuncture is classed as a complementary therapy, which is the term given to a medical procedure which hasn't been subjected to the strict trials by which scientists prove some treatments work. While many experts have welcomed the move to make acupuncture available on the NHS, some are still sceptical about its effectiveness.Research from the US earlier this month found that simulated acupuncture using toothpicks which do not pierce the skin could be as good as using real needles. So while some are yet to be convinced, back pain sufferers will be hoping that acupuncture helps get them feeling healthy and mobile again. Employers, on the other hand, will be hoping it gets them back to work.1. What is the single largest cause of sick leave in the UK?2. What treatment will Britain's NHS offer as a new way to treat back pain?3. What are the back pain sufferers adivised to do traditionally?4. Why is acupuncture classed as a complementary therapy in the UK?5. What did the US researchers find earlier this month?Key:一、T F F F T二、1.Back pain2.
