(The Last Class)i was very late for school that morning, and i was terribly afraid of being scolded[责骂],especially as monsieur[法语:先生] hamel had told us that he should examine us on participles[分词], and i did not know the first thing about them. for a moment i thought of staying away from school and wandering about the fields. it was such a warm, lovely day. i could hear the blackbirds whistling on the edge of the wood, and in the rippert field, behind the sawmill[锯木厂],the prussians going through their drill. all that was much more tempting to me than the rules concerning participles; but i had the strength to resist, and i ran as fast as i could to school.

My husband and I really had some all-out battles about his parents (regarding finances, where we would live, religious issues, etc.). Unfortunately, he was completely oblivious to how I felt or that anything was truly wrong. When I was going through all of this with my husband, I really felt so alone. I thought I was crazy/selfish to feel that way and often blamed myself. At first, I called him a Mama’s Boy and told him I felt like I was a low priority to him. This, of course, did not go over well... so I changed my direction.I’ve been married for three years now, and Jenna’s book played a big role in gaining my husband’s loyalty. I started out by making a decision that I would not berate (责怪) my husband for his family’s actions. After all, he can’t help what his relatives do, and to blame him for other people’s actions wouldn’t really be fair. Secondly, I made a resolution that I would NEVER let them create an argument or problem between my husband and me... this was really a groundbreaking moment for me. After all, it was in my power to control what items became issues in my m arriage. I wouldn’t allow petty stuff his family did to upset our balance... that would just give them more power, control, and influence. This took a lot of time, but once my husband realized that I was taking the high road, he started listening to me more.I promised “for better or for worse” and I decided not to let my in-laws make it worse. Asa new bride, I had no idea what I was in for in terms of family management, and even now I take time to re-read certain sections from Jenna’s book periodically. I t is taking time and patience to gain my husband’s loyalty, and it’s an ongoing process —but I think it’s well worthit.4.What can be learned from the first paragraph?A.The writer agreed with her mother/father-in-law in religion.B.The writer felt really happy the first six months she was married.C.Money might be no problem for the writer’s family.D.Her husband didn’t care about her so much as expected.5.Which of the following column names best suits the passage?A.A method of sound income and environment for employees.B.An inspiration of happy marriage forever for gentlemen.C.A source of hope and encouragement for wives.D.Interesting stories about family relationships.6.What does the underlined “that” refer to in the 2nd paragraph?A.Allowing petty stuff. B.Blaming her husband.C.Creating an argument. D.Upsetting their balance.7.What is the author’s attitude toward Jenna’s book?A.Critical. B.Objective.C.Suspicious. D.Appreciative.Women in East Asia are putting tiny pegs into their nostrils so their nose could look more European. The beauty trend apparently started from South Korea about two years ago and has spread to Japan, Chinese mainland and Taiwan, where women with a pointier European nose are considered more attractive. The beauty trend, however, has sparked serious health concerns. In a recent case from China, a woman reportedly swallowed a peg by accident and the small item was later found in her stomach. The non-surgical nose-lifting trend apparently involves a set of tools which are popular on shopping websites in East and South-east Asia. A typical set consists of two small curved pegs, measuring two to three centimetres long, as well as one adjusting hook. The most popular brand seems to come from South Korea, but various other copycat products have cropped up and sell for as little as 1 pound. According to the instructions online, users should first insert the two pegs into their nostrils respectively. The pegs are said to be made with silicone. Then they should use the hook to adjust the pegs so they stand in a45-degree angle inside the nose. One seller on China’s popular shopping site, Taobao, claimed that because the product was invisible, it could be a woman’s secret weapon in getting a beautiful nose without surgery. An adver tisement posted by the seller said the product, said to be “anti-bacteria”, could change the shape of a nose in less than 10 seconds and is safe to use. However, potential customers are advised not to wear them for more than eight hours.Although the nasal pegs are popular among beauty-conscious females, they have also brought health issues to the customers. Last November, a 25-year-old woman in Taipei nearly lost her nose after a peg poked through her nasal membrane and caused a bacterial infection, according to Apple Daily.8.Why do women put tiny pegs into their nose?A.To be a European. B.To look more appealing.C.To follow the trend. D.To be smarter.9.According to the seller on Taobao, what advantage does the peg have?A.It is made from silicone. B.It is a bacteria-free product.C.It is hidden and non-surgical. D.It costs as little as 1 pound.10.What message does the passage mainly convey to people?A.The most popular brand peg comes from South Korea.B.Women in East Asia are putting tiny pegs into their nostrils.C.People should be cautious about using beauty pegs.D.A pointier European nose is in fashion at present.11.Who are intended readers of the passage?A.Girls in their teens. B.Beauty-conscious females. C.Scientists and doctors. D.Potential peg producers. On Remembrance Day members of the armed forces (soldiers, sailors and airmen) are commemorated (纪念).The other common name for this day is Armistice Day which marks the date and time when armies stopped fighting World War Ⅰ, on November 11th at 11am in 1918 (the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month). Some 100,000 Canadian soldiers died in the First and Second World Wars.In Canada, Remembrance Day is a federal statutory (法定的) holiday — with a notableexception of Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, Ontario and Quebec — as it is in many other countries in the world where this day is observed on the national level. All government buildings fly the Canadian flag this day and people remember those who fought for Canada during a two-minute silence at 11am. Many people wear poppies before and on Remembrance Day to show their respect and support for Canadian troops. Poppies are generally handed out free but often a voluntary donation is given in exchange. In the United Stat es this day is called Veterans’ Day and is also observed on November 11th.Should Remembrance Day be a state holiday in every province? We continue to receive lots of messages from people all over the country who are outraged (气愤的) why Remembrance Day is not a state holiday everywhere in Canada. Indeed, it would make sense to make this a state holiday in every province and territory — even in Ontario. But not everyone agrees. Send us your thoughts about this issue in the comment area near the bottom of this page.Recently we received a comment from Jason and would like to post it on this page because we think that Jason makes a very good point in his message:“Please DO NOT make Remembrance Day a statutory holiday in Ontario. Family Day is a much more appreciated break for families in the heart of the long cold depressing winter. Remembrance Day is better observed in a ceremony at your school, community centre or place of work.”12.What can be learned about Remembrance Day?A.It was established on November 11th, 1918.B.It is also referred to as Armistice Day.C.It is not observed on the same day as Veterans’ Day.D.It is held in memory of American soldiers that died in two world wars.13.What usually take place to mark Remembrance Day in Canada?A.The Canadian flag will appear on all buildings.B.People hold a two-minute silence at 12 am.C.All people wear poppies just on the day.D.Poppies are often offered in exchange for some donation.14.Why is Jason’s comment posted based on the text?A.There is something in what he said about the issue.B.Not everyone agrees to have Remembrance Day.C.To collect people’s different views on the issue.D.To show Family Day is appreciated in Ontario.15.Where is this passage most likely taken from?A.The Internet. B.The magazine.C.The newspaper. D.The history book. Google announced this week that its building 100 self-driving car prototypes and Lloyd wrote a great piece discussing various city and planning implications, questions, and suggestions. 16.It’s electric!Google didn’t make a big point of this, but the self-driving cars will be 100% electric. 17.Their small size would further help on the green front, but one commenter noted to me that the aerodynamics could be much better. Indeed. However, my understanding is that the shape of the vehicle is centered around the laser and radar sensors, maximizing their view. You can summon the car!As The Guardian puts it,” the car is summoned by a smartphone for pickup at the user’s location with the destination set.” 18.19.A key point that was very quickly mentioned in Lloyd’s post is that the cars only contain “two seats, a space for passengers’ belongings, buttons to start and stop, and a screen that shows the route —and that’s about it".The car will have a range of 100 miles.20.And the infamous and overhyped “range anxiety” shouldn’t be a problem for anyone, as the car should be smart enough to know whether or not it can get to its destination.A.It has no pedals, no steering wheel.B.Confused? Don’t worry, this isn’t just for fun.C.The car doesn’t want you to feel too at home.D.That would certainly make them much greener than typical cars.E.I know that’s what we all think of, but I thought that step of the technology was still a long way off.F.On a full charge, the car will have a range of 100 miles, which is a lot for a non-Tesla 100% electric car.G.Here are a few more points about the self-driving cars themselves that we thought were pretty interesting. I’d like to take you back about seven years in my life.
