Mastering a large number of words is essential to achieving fluency in a foreign language. An unofficial, but often quoted, figure for the Cambridge First Certificate examination suggests that students with a vocabulary of less than 3,500 words are unlikely to be successful in the exam. Current research also suggests that native English speakers who have been educated up to 18 years old or beyond know at least 16,000 English words. And unless you already speak a language like Spanish or German, there are no short-cuts to get a large vocabulary in English: you just have to rely on diligence and dedication. Of course you can figure outfrom the context the meanings of some new words you come across in your reading, but more often than not you have to look them up in a dictionary in order to be clear about their accurate meanings. A practicable way to pick up new words may be to read a lot, preferably stories that you find interesting or exciting. It's often good to read the same book over and over again: every time you read it, you will learn different new words, and the familiar context helps to fix them in your mind.Unit 21、我认为向他求助是不现实的。

One Writer's Beginnings1 I learned from the age of two or three that any room in our house, at any time of day, was there to read in, or to be read to. My mother read to me. She'd read to me in thebig bedroom in the mornings, when we were in her rocker together, which ticked in rhythm as we rocked, as though we had a cricket accompanying the story. She'd read to me in the dining room on winter afternoons in front of the coal fire, with our cuckoo clock ending the story with "Cuckoo", and at night when I'd got in my own bed. I must have given her no peace. Sometimes she read to me in the kitchen while she sat churning, and the churning sobbed along with any story. It was my ambition to have her read to me while I churned; once she granted my wish, but she read off my story before I brought her butter. She was an expressive reader. When she was reading "Puss in Boots," for instance, it was impossible not to know that she distrusted all cats.作家起步时我从两三岁起就知道,家中随便在哪个房间里,白天无论在什么时间,都可以念书或听人念书。

Old Age
As regards health, I have nothing useful to say since I have little experience of illness. I eat and drink whatever I like, and sleep when I cannot keep awake. I never do anything whatever on the ground that it is good for health, though in actual fact the things I like doing are mostly wholesome.
Psychologically where are two dangers to be guarded against in old age. One of these is undue absorption in the past. It does not do to live in memories, in regards for the good old days, or in sadness about friends who are dead. One’s thoughts must be directed to the future, and to things about which there is something to be done. This is not always easy; one’s own past is a gradually increasing weight. It is easy to think to oneself that one’s emotions used to be more vivid than they are, and one’s mind more keen, if this is true it should be forgotten, and if it is forgotten it will probably to be true.
The other thing to be avoided is clinging to youth in the hope of sucking vigor from its vitality. When your children are grown up they want to live their own lives, and if you continue to be as interested in them as you were when they were young, you are likely to become a burden to them, unless they are unusually callous. I do not mean that one should be without interest in them, but one’s interest should be contemplative and if possible, philanthropic, but not unduly emotional. Animals become indifferent to their young as soon as their young can look after themselves, but human beings, owing to the length of infancy, find this difficult.
A Y oung Mother
The bus was moving at a moderate speed in the drizzle.
It stopped at a station, and among those who came aboard was a young mother. She had a baby on her back, who was fast asleep and whose sex could not be identified. Her hands were full: an umbrella, a plastic bag full of fruits and vegetables and a huge brightly red tub. The hand-embroidered pack was gorgeous, the tailoring and colour showing the beautiful taste of country folk. When someone was offering his seat to her, the bus suddenly braked.
Instantly, she held the baby closer to her back, and her body lurched forward in spite of herself. In her desperate effort to avoid a fall, she put her head against the side of the bus. It wasn’t a very beautiful movement, but she succeeded in steadying herself. She quickly resumed her former posture, and realizing her momentary loss of beautiful carriage, she flushed to the roots of her hair.
The little one was all the time enjoying her sleep.
