“Blue skies," I sang,“smiling at m..." But no one was smiling. My classmates looked bored as they waited to rehearse(排练). It was just hours before the talent show, and my voice wasn't sounding good. I sadly sat down on the floor. My act was too bad.

My parents were on their way. My mother had been my age when she started painting seriously, and had shown and sold works in her thirties. But her hands were now too busy washing, cleaning and making salad. Still, 1 kept hoping she'd start again. I gave her sketchbook(写生簿) every Mother's Day and Christmas.

“Maybe 1 should read poems," 1 found the show's host and let her know.

“Next up, Sandra Beasley ,”came the introduction.

No one had warned me about the spotlight(聚光灯)。1 squinted(眯着眼看), looking for my parents, but 1 couldn't pick out either of their faces. My first poem was one to blueberries. Then 1 read a poem about chemistry class and found a rhythm, "This last one," I said, "is for my mum."

The poem described our laundry(洗衣) room, which had once been her studio. She was an artist. Where was her art?

“How can I1 learn," the poem finished, “if you do not teach?”

“Thank you," 1 said. The audience(观众) gave a big hand. A friend took my arm as I left the stage.

“Wonderful!" she said.“Jeez, is your mum her e?" My heart dropped. My mother had expected to hear me sing Blue Skies. Instead, she had been chastised(谴责) in front of all the audience.

When the house lights came up, 1 noticed my dad waving me over.“Well, hey," he said. “That was something else." She w as standing on his other side. She could have said, “That's not your story to tell."

Instead she pulled me toward her. I laid my face to her shoulder so quickly that I'd never know for sure if her eyes were wet. There are some tears that a mother is not willing to show, and there are some tears a daughter is not

ready to see.

Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive(欺骗)? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.

For example, some might say,“I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery(彩票). It was great. 1 took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!"

This guy is a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $ 200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser!

He didn't say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That's called a half truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.

Some politicians often use this trick. Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of the persons who don' t support her says, “During Governor Smith's term, the state l ost one million jobs!" That's true. However, an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith's term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs."

Advertisers will sometimes use half truths. It's against the law to make false statements, so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Y ucky Pills to cure toothache." It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.

This kind of deception happens too often. It's a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well .

The other day, I arrived at my gym at 5:30 a.m. for exercise, and then came back at 7 a.m. to go to work. But I couldn't find my car. 1 walked back over to the parking signs and discovered one saying that towing(拖车) started at 6:30 a.m. My car had been towed.

I called the number on the sign which connected me to our local police station, but they had no record of my car being towed. I waited for a while and then decided to go into the building next to my gym, where I asked the woman behind the information desk if she had seen my car towed. Nope, she had just come on at 7 a.m.

But she said, "Let me call the police station for you." They still didn't know where my car was.

I had started to turn away when she said,“Well, 1 know a lot of the towing companies that tow around here." She called Eastham's down the street, but no luck.

So, again, I started to turn away. And she said,“Oh no, don't go. I know some others 1 can call." So she looked up the number for G&G Towing. Again, no luck.

She told me not to despair, looked up another towing company s number, and called it. This time it worked. They said my car had been towed to a street in town that neither of us had heard of. So she printed me out a map. and gave me directions to get started.

All this took over 20 minutes. When I kept thanking her for her help, she repeatedly replied, "Oh, of course 1 should help you."

I did find my car and went to work that day. Since then, I haven't forgotten this woman behind the information desk. She gave, to a total stranger in need, a helping hand. Before 1 turned to walk away, I took both her hands and thanked her,“Many blessings(祝福) to you."

Having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, drink and

even fight. They often do something dangerous.

Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely to make irrational decisions

than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers

are too young to tell right from wrong? Not really. So what's the reason?

According to Laurence, a teacher from an American university, the reason is that

teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同龄人) view them-- that is "peer

influence".

As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and also they care more about what they think of them. This makes teenagers make decisions without thinking about the costs.

In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends watching around them. they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely.

Why do peers have such a big influence on teens' behaviour?

As Laurence sees it. a teenager's brain is like a car with a good accelerator(油门) but a weak brake(刹车). The “accelerator is fully developed by teenage years while the “brake" is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers. they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to end up in an accident.

But the good news is that a violent teenager doesn’ t necessarily become a violent adult. About two thirds to three quarters of violent youth grow out of it. They get more self- controlled.

( )1. What does the underlined word “irrational," in the 2n d paragraph probably mean?

A. Quick.

B. Crazy. .

C. Careful.

D. Correct.

( )2. According to the passage, teenagers often take risks because .

A. they like challenging themselves

B. they are too young to tell right from wrong

C. they don't think about costs

D. they care about what their peers think of them

( )3. How does Laurence explain the influence of peer influence on teens' behaviour?

A. By using a metaphor( 比喻).

B. By giving real examples.

C. By presenting research results.

D. By doing experiments.

( )4. We can learn from the text that .

A. teenagers are easy to have traffic accidents

B. peer influence has a good influence on teenagers

C. most of the teenagers become less violent when they grow up

D. teenagers shouldn't spend all the free time with their friends

2020届中考英语阅读理解50篇(含答案)

2020届中考英语阅读理解50篇 (绝对精品训练题,接近实战考题,值得下载练习) 1 When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelon was expensive. One of my father’s friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul. Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock(码头), feet dangling(摇晃), and got ready for a big meal. Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free part—and throw away the rest. Bernie was my father’s idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon. What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life. For many years, I forgot that lesson I’d learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could. Well, I’ve relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw t he rest away. 1. We learned from the second paragraph that the writer and his father were feeling ______. A. relaxed B. worried C. hungry D. proud 2. How did the writer and his father eat the watermelon? A. They ate it in a polite way. B. They only ate its best part. C. They ate every part of it. D. They shared only one piece. 3. In the eyes of the writer’s father, Bernie ______. A. was just a rich businessman B. worked hard all the time C. lived a rich but healthy life D. knew how to make money

“停课不停学”:2020高考英语时事热点拓展阅读(四) Passage1妙哉!大学生首创文言文编程。 词数310 建议阅读时间5分钟 World's First Classical Chinese Programming Language Although programming vary forms and rules, the keywords used for almost all of them are in English. The International Data Corporation (IDC) estimates however that nearly half of the world’s 22.3 million software developers come from the Asia-Pacific region. China and India alone account for about one third of the world’s total developer population. In an attempt to add some diversity to the range of available programming languages, Carnegie Mellon University computer science major Lingdong Huang has developed ‘Wenyan-Lang,’ a programming language based on Chinese hanzi characters and the wenyan classical Chinese grammar system. Huang did not simply replace the English characters with Chinese hanzi, instead he applied NLP techniques to convert (转变) classical Chinese grammar to JavaScript, Python, and Ruby. He has open sourced the wenyan-lang project on GitHub, where it received a staggering (令人难以相信的)11,900 stars in a week or so. A fan of classic Chinese literature, Huang came up with the idea of programming in Chinese in order to shed light on the beauty of wenyan and to inherit (继承) the historical imprint left by generations of eminent (非凡的) figures in Chinese history. But most importantly, Huang believes the goal of communication is to go beyond the limits of language: “My project still has a lot of room for improvement, but my desire for communication is as strong as some of the historical figures.” Huang says programming punctuation and line breaks can be removed without affecting the output.
