The Olympic Games

Ladies and gentlemen, Good morning! Today I am very glad to have this opportunity to report my teaching ideas to you. My talking topic is The Olympic Games. It is the Reading Part of Unit 8 Senior One. Now, Please let me get down to my topic talk. It is made up of 4 parts.

Part One: On Teaching Materials

Aiming at reading comprehension, it tells something about The Olympic Games. According to the teaching syllabus, the Ss are expected to fully understand the passage. At the same time, they should do some reading, listening and writing. Of course, the Ss can also get some moral lessons from this passage; that is, they should love sports because it can help them to keep their bodies strong and have a good time every day. Teaching aims:

1.Improve the students’ read ing ability by fast-reading and

careful-reading.

2. Enable the students to master the information of some passages

about the Olympic Games, as well as the language points.

3. Train the students to love and take an active part in the sports.

Key and difficult question:

How to further develop the Ss’ reading ability by learning the text. Part Two: On Teaching and Learning Methods

When I deal with it, I’ll try to use t he following methods:

1. Discuss the method to make the students understand what they’ve

learned better.

2. At the same time, I’ll try to enlighten the Ss in the course of

teaching. I’ll try to adopt the student-centred teaching style, getting every student to take an active part in teaching-and-learning

activities through PairWork or Group Work.

3. In order to make the lesson lively and interesting, I’ll try to use

modern equipment, e.g. computer; software; powerpoint. I’ll also use a lot of pictures, material objects, gestures and so on.

Part Three: On Teaching Process

It’s made up of 5 steps.

Step 1 Greetings

Greet the whole class as usual.

Step 2 Lead-in and Pre-reading

Have a free talk with the whole class. then play a song Hand in Hand for them to enjoy. Tell the Ss what they will learn in this period ——The Olympic Games. Ask the students the following questions by Showing two pictures talking about Liu Xiang and Yao Ming, at the same time the teacher can do some sketching on the blackboard.

Do you like sports?

Which sport do you like best?

Who is your favorite sport star?

Then the teacher can ask the Students this question:

What do you know about the Olympic Games?

The teacher goes on telling some information about the Olympic Games.

1. Where and when did the first modern Olympic Games happen?

(The first modern Olympic Games happened in 1896 in Greece.)

(The Olympic motto “Faster, Higher, Stronger” means every athlete should try to run faster, jump higher and throw further.)

( They are held every four years. The competitors from all over the world take part in the games.) The ancient Olympic Games began around the year 776 BC in Greece. In ancient times the young men competed in these games, but women were not allowed to take part in them. After about the year 393 the Olympic Games stopped. The first Olympic Games in modern times happened in Greece in 1896. In the 1896 games there were 311 competitors from just 13 countries. The 27th Summer Olympics were held in Sydney, Australia in 2000. Over 10,000 athletes from nearly 200 countries competed in the games.

the same as表示“和……一样”,其中as是关系代词,引导定语从句, 且在从句中作宾语、主语或表语。e. g.

注意: the same...as也表示“和…… 一样”, 其中same为形容词, 后

面接名词, as仍然引导定语从句, 指相似的人或物; the same...that 表示“……和……一样”, 其中that为关系代词, 引导定语从句, 指同一人或物。如:

2. The ancient Olympic Games began around the year 776 BC in Greece.

The year 776BC,公元前776年,BC是before Christ(耶稣)的缩写形式,即:“耶稣诞生前;公元前”。

AD 393,公元393年,AD是Anno Domini的缩写,意为:“公元”。

3. It means that every athlete should try to run faster, jump higher and throw further.

句子中further相当于farther, 表示“更远”, 但further还可用于表示“进一步, 进而”。

Step 6 Discussion

1. Being the host of the Olympics will have good and bad effects on the host city. Work together and write down some of the effects.

Good effects: (People all over the world will learn about the city and its people; Attracting investment; Many sports fans will visit the city and will bring great benefits to the city.)

Bad effects: (It is very expensive to host the Olympics. Maybe the money should be used for other things; Too many visitors may do harm to the environment of the city; The venues and buildings may be wasted

after the Olympic Games. )
