一、阅读理解(共7小题;每小题2分,满分14分)AThere are many dangerous sea creatures in the world. The following are someexamples. The needlefish are commonly seen living near the surface of tropical (热带的) waters. But they can also break cover the water, and once in the air they can become dangerous flying swords. Though it is rare, people have been seriously hurt and even killed by the fish. Night fishermen in small boats are at particular risk because theirlights may attract the fish.Saltwater crocodiles are the world's largest crocodiles ,sometimes reaching 23 feet in length and topping 2,200 pounds. Yet these crocodiles hunt quietly ,lying in wait below shoreline waters to attack turtles and thirsty animals that have come to drink.Saltwater crocodiles kill a number of people each year. There is no doubt that the great white shark sits atop the ocean food chain. The world's largest fish can weigh at over 5,000 pounds and reach lengths of more than 20feet. Great white sharks have about 3,000 teeth ,which they typically sink into sea lions ,seals ,and sea turtles. These sharks are responsible for a third to a half of the 100shark attacks on humans every year. The sea anemone (海葵) may look like the beautiful flower for which it's named ,but fish that swim too close may regret it. The sea anemone ,which lives on the sea floor ,uses its poisonous tentacles (触须) to stab passing creatures with a kind of poison —making them helpless and fit to be eaten.此卷只装订不密封班级 姓名 准考证号 考场号 座位号The surgeonfish (刺尾鱼) is an attractive reef fish that is poisonous. Scientists believe that the world’s seas hold some 1, 200 different surgeonfish species and think that they injure about50,000 people per year. But the surgeonfish poison can also bring great benefit—they are useful in the development of new drugs.1. The underlined phrase “break cover” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.A. jump out ofB. break away fromC. get away fromD. go back to2. How many attacks on humans do great white sharks do every year?A. About 26.B. About 45.C. About 60.D. About 75.3. It can be learned from the passage that ________.A. the saltwater crocodiles are gentle and never hurt peopleB. the sea anemone lives near the surface of the seaC. the great white shark is the largest fish in the worldD. the needlefish live in the sea all around the world4. Which of the following can be used to benefit human society?A. The needlefish.B. The sea anemone.C. The great white shark.D. The surgeonfish.BThere is a huge demand for shark fins (鳍) in Asian countries. As a result, many sharks are caught and killed. In Palau, where more than half of tourists are drawn by diving excursions, each reef shark brings in about $179,000 in tourism revenue annually, or about $1.9 million during its lifetime. Due to overexploitation and lack of proper management, many shark species are under considerable risk of unrecoverable decline with some species having declined to near extinction in recent years. According to reports, sharks are being killed at an alarming rate of up to 273 million worldwide per year. Some experts predict that if the killing continues at the current rate many shark species will be lost forever. It can be very dangerous. Sharks are very important and they should be protected. In a study of the east coast of the United States, 11 species of sharks were eliminated from their range. Of the 14 species of ocean life that those sharks used to eat, the populations of 12 exploded and caused great damage to the ecosystem. For example, the cownose ray (鳐) population was no longer kept under control by sharks and so grew out of control. As a result, the rays destroyed the population of bay scallops (扇贝), their favorite food. The scallop fishery, which had been in good condition for over 100 years, was wiped out. Also, the removal of the scallops most likely had an effect on water quality as they were no longer there to perform their function of cleaning the water.Sharks play a vital role in the oceans in a way that the average fish does not. Most sharks serve as top predators at the pinnacle of the marine food pyramid, and so play a critical role in ocean ecosystems. Directly or indirectly they regulate the natural balance of these ecosystems. Sharks tend to eat very efficiently, going after the old, sick, or slower fish in a population, keeping that population healthy. Sharks help keep many populations of ocean life to the right size so that those prey (猎物) species don’t cause harm to the ecosystem by becoming too populated. The ocean ecosystem is made up ofvery complex food webs. For the most part, sharks are at the top of these webs and are considered by scientists to be "keystone" species, meaning that removing them may cause the whole structure to fall apart, including key fisheries such as tuna and other important fish species that maintain the health of coral reefs. Therefore, we should protect sharks because doing so is to protect the whole ecosystem.5. The underlined word "eliminated" in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by "________".A. separatedB. removedC. forbiddenD. protected6. After the number of cownose rays greatly increased, ________.A. water quality improved as wellB. bay scallops grew out of controlC. the health of coral reefs worsenedD. the local scallop fishery was harmed7. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. Why sharks are killed worldwide.B. Why sharks should be protected.C. How humans keep the ecosystem balanced.D. How ocean life affects the ecosystem.二、单词拼写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)1. If you _________ (跳水) into some water, you jump in head-first with your arms held straight above your head.2. Do you know what the building which is being built is used for?Do you know what the building________ ________is used for?Ⅳ. 阅读理解(每小题2.5分,共20分)AScientists today are making greater effort to study ocean currents (洋流). Most do it using satellites and other high-tech equipment. However, ocean expert Curtis Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way —by studying movements of random floating garbage. A scientist with many years’ experience, he started this type of research in the early 1990s when he heard about hundreds of athletic shoes washing up on the shores of the northwest coast of the United States. There were so many shoes that people were setting up swap meets to try and match left and right shoes to sell or wear.Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes —about 60,000 in total —fell into the ocean in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back. As expected, the company told him that they didn’t. Ebbesmeyer realized this could b e a great experiment. If he learned when and where the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed, he could learn a lot about the patterns of ocean currents. The Pacific Northwest is one of the world’s best areas for beachcombing (海滩搜寻) because winds and currents join here, and as a result, there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area. Ebbesmeyer got to know a lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed. In a year he collected reliable information on 1,600 shoes. With this data, he and a colleague were able to test and improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents, and publish the findings of their study. As the result of his work, Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean. He has even started an association of beachcombers and ocean experts, with 500 subscribers from West Africa to New Zealand. They have recorded all lost objects ranging from potatoesto golf gloves.1. The underlined phrase swap meets in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to________.A. fitting roomsB. trading fairsC. business talksD. group meetings2. Ebbesmeyer phoned the shoe company to find out ________.A. what caused the shipping accidentB. when and where the shoes went missingC. whether it was all right to use their shoesD. how much they lost in the shipping accident3. How did Ebbesmeyer prove his assumption?A. By collecting information from beachcombers.B. By studying the shoes found by beachcombers.C. By searching the Web for ocean currents models.D. By researching ocean currents data in the library.4. What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage?A. To call people’s attention to ocean pollution.B. To warn people of shipping safety in the ocean.C. To explain a unique way of studying ocean currents.D. To give tips on how to search for lost objects on the beach.BLobsters (龙虾) can be found throughout the world’s oceans, with the exception of the north and south polar regions. Different types of lobster choose different areas to live. Many lobsters live in shallow water in the coastal areas around islands. One group of lobsters, called deep-sea lobsters, lives in the cold, deep sea. When it comes to predators (捕食者), humans have to be placed first on the list thanks to a multibillion dollar fishing industry. In the oceans lobsters face threats from a range of fish and sea mammals.Atlantic cod are found throughout the Atlantic Ocean at depths of between 200 and 440 feet. Small cod are primarily bottom feeders. Fully-grown cod will eat pretty much anything they can swallow whole including lobsters.Summer FlounderThe summer flounder is a flat fish. What is unique about the fish is that both its eyes are on one side of its body. They stay close to the sea beds in the Atlantic waters off the coast of North America. They are effective predators that search for food on the sea floor. The flounder has sharp teeth capable of crushing (粉碎) small lobsters.Harbor SealsFound in Arctic and sub-arctic waters in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the harbor seals rest on sandy beaches and take to the water to hunt. Seals have a varied diet, eating a range of fish. They also eat lobsters. WolffishThe wolffish is found in coastal waters on both sides of the North Atlantic. It has a large mouth with sharp and long teeth. These teeth are specifically for eating hard-shelled animals. Lobsters are easy prey for the fish.5. Ⅰ阅读理解AAs I began my junior year of college, I began to think of plans after graduation. I knew that I wanted to work in the field of my major, public relations. But I also knew that it was difficult to find a position considering my inexperience. That was when I decided to pursue an internship(实习工作).So I chose to talk to my advisor first. He had worked in the field of public relations for many years before he became a professor, and therefore had numerous contacts and associates in the field. After talking to him about a few of the positions, I decided to pursue the Cincinnati Fine Arts Fund because of my interest in the arts and the passion I would feel working for a nonprofit organization. I sent out a cover letter and a resume and was hired on the spot in the interview.I soon began my position. After class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I would drive to work and apply all the skills I was learning in the classroom. I was amazed at the amount of practical knowledge in class that was directly applicable to my internship position. It became a very useful and beneficial experience. Not only was I working for arts organizations and seeing my name printed on documents I had created, but also gaining confidence in my skills and myself. As the semester came to a close, I finished my work with the Fine Arts Fund.
