In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone He didn’t have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter form the freezing wind and snow. Then he piledbranches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as hecould.By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow anddrank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn’t lose toomuch water. Not knowing how muchlonger he could last, Nicholasdid the only thing he could — he huddled (蜷缩) in his cave and slept. The n ext day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’tfind anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday,Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a milewhen a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in thesnow, Nicholas was saved.Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not beenfor TV. He had often watched Grylls’ survival show Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode(一期节目) of Man vs. Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area andhas to find his way out. When Grylls heard about Nicholas’ amazing deeds, he wassuper impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew betterthan anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.BRevolutionary TV EarsTV Ears has helped thousands of people with various degrees of hearing loss hear the television clearly without turning up the volume(音量) and now it’s better and more affordable than ever With TV Ears wireless technology, you set your own headset volume, while other TV listeners hear the television at a volume level that’s comfortable for them. However, social changes are broughtabout by new technology are often mistaken for a change in attitudes. An example at hand is the involvement of parents in the lives oftheir children who are attending college. Surveys (调查) on this topicsuggests that parents today continue to be “very” or “somewhat”overly-protective even after their children move into collegedormitories. The same surveys also indicate that the rate of parental involvement is greater today than it was a generation ago. This isusually interpreted as a sign that today’s parents are trying tomanage their children’s lives past the point where this behavior isappropriate. However, greater parental involvement does not necessarily indicate that parents are failing to let go of their “adult” children. In the context (背景) of this discussion, it seems valuable to firstfind out the cause of change in the case of parents’ involvement withtheir grown childr en. If parents of earlier generations had wanted to be in touch with their college-age children frequen tly, would thishave been possible Probably not. On the other hand, does the possibility of frequent communication today mean that the urge to do so was n’t present a generation ago Many studies show that older parents—today’s grandparents—would have called theirchildren more often if the means and cost of doing so had not beena barrier.Furthermore, studies show that finances are the most frequentsubject of communication between parents and their collegechildren. The fact that college students are financially dependent ontheir parents is nothing new; nor are requests for more money to besent from home. This phenomenon is neither good nor bad; it is afact of college life, today and in the past. Thanks to the advanced technology, we live in an age ofbettered communication. This has many implications well beyondthe role that parents seem to play in the lives of their children whohave left for college. But it is useful to bear in mind that all such changes come from the technology and not some imagined desireby parents to keep their children under their wings.67. The surveys inform us of______.A. the development of technologyB. the changes of adult ch ildren’s behaviorC. the parents’ over-protection of their college childrenD. the means and expenses of students’ communication68. The writer believes that__________.A. parents today are more protective than those in the pastB. the disadvantages of new technology outweigh its advantagesC. technology explains greater involvement with their childrenD. parents’changed attitudes lead to college children’s delayed independence69. What is the best title for the passageA. Technology or AttitudeB. Dependence or IndependenceC. Family Influences or Social ChangesD. College Management or Communication Advancement70. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in this passageDLife in the ClearTransparent animals let light pass through their bodies the same way light passes through a window. These animals typically live between the surface of the ocean and a depth of about 3,300 feet—as far as most light can reach. Most of them are extremely delicate and can be damaged by a simple touch. Sonke Johnsen, a scientist in biology, says, “These animals live through their life alone. They never touch anything unless they’re eating it, or unless something is eating them.”And they are as clear as glass. How does an animal become see-through It’s trickier than you might think. The objects around you are visible because they interact with light. Light typically travels in a straight line. But some materials slow and scatter(散射) light, bouncing it away from its original path. Others absorb light, stopping itdead in its tracks. Both scattering and absorption make an object look different from other objects around it, so you can see it easily. But a transparent object doesn’t absorb or scatter light, at least not very much, Light can pass through it without bending or stopping. That means a transparent object doesn’t look very different from the surrounding air or water. You don’t see it ----you see the things behind it.To become transparent, an animal needs to keep its body from absorbing or scattering light. Living materials can stop light because they contain pigments(色素) that absorb specific colors of light. But a transparent animal doesn’t have pigments, so its tissues won’t absorb light. According to Johnsen, avoiding absorption is actually easy. The real challenge is preventing light from scattering.Animals are built of many different materials----skin, fat, and more----and light moves through each at a different speed. Every time light moves into a material with a new speed, it bends and scatters. Transparent animals use different tricks to fight scattering. Some animals are simply very small or extremely flat. Without much tissue to scatter light, it is easier to be see—through. Others build a large, clear mass of non-living jelly-lie(果冻状(de))material and spread themselves over it .Larger transparent animals have the biggest challenge, because they have to make all the different tissues in their bodies slow down light exactly as much as water does. They need to look uniform. But how they’re doing it is still unknown. Onething is clear for these larger animals, staying transparent is an active process. When they die, they turn a non-transparent milky white.63. According to Paragraph 1, transparent animals_______.A. stay in groupsB. can be easily damagedC. appear only in deep oceanD. are beautiful creatures64. AExplorers Camp●Full day camp for kids aged5-13.●Monday‒Friday,July8‒26,9am‒4pm.Week1|July8‒12Week2|July15‒19Week3|July22‒26●Register for a single week or multiple weeks.●Fees:$365per week.●Thelastday to cancel registration and receive a full refund(退款)is June15.Camp StructureThe day is divided into two thematic sessions per age group.Campers have a three-hour morning class engaging with a morning theme(9am to12noon)and a one-hour lunch break, followed by another three-hour class engaging with an afternoon theme(1pm to4pm).Snack periods are held throughout the day.Allcampersshould bring their own bagged lunch and snacks. Camp ContentExplorers Camp organizes engaging arts, history and science-related activities in every class, and focuses on a range of topics that emphasize active learning, exploration and, most of all, fun! All camp sessions are created with age-appropriate activities that are tailored to the multiple ways that kids learn.Camp StaffCampers enjoy a staff-to-child ratio ranging from1:4to1:7depending on the age group. Instructors are passionate educators who are experts in their fields and have undergone training and a background check.21.On which of the following dates can you cancel your registration with a full refund?A.June12.B.June22.C.July19.D.July26.22.How are campers divided into different groups?A.By gender.B.By nationality.C.By interest.D.By age.23.How many hours of class will you have altogether if you register for a single week?A.15.B.21.C.30.D.42.BLivewithroommates?Have friends and family around you?Chances are that if you're looking to liveamoresustainable lifestyle, not everyone around you will be ready to jump on that bandwagon.I experienced this when I started switching to a zero waste lifestyle five years ago,as I was living with my parents, and I continue to experience this with my husband,as he is not completely zero waste like me.I've learned a few things along the way though, which I hope you'll find encouraging if you're doingyourbesttofigure out how you can make the change in a not-always-supportive household.Zero waste was a radical lifestyle movement a few years back.I remember showing my parents a video of Bea Johnson, sharing how cool I thought it would be to buy groceries with jars, and have so little trash!A few days later,I came back with my first jars of zero waste groceries, and my dad commented on how silly it was for me to carry jars everywhere. It came off as a bit discouraging.Yet as the months of reducing waste continued,I did what I could that was within my own reach.I had my own bedroom,so I worked on removing things I didn't need.Since I had my own toiletries(洗漱用品),I was able to start personalising my routine to be more sustainable.I also offered to cook every so often,so I portioned out a bit of the cupboard for my own zero waste groceries.Perhaps your household won't entirely make the switch, but you may have some control over your own personal spaces to make thechanges you desire.Asyou make your lifestyle changes, you may find yourself wanting to speak up for yourself if others comment on what you're doing, which can turn itself into a whole household debate. If you have individuals who are not on board, your words probably won't do much and can often leave you feeling morediscouraged.Sohere is my advice:Lead by action.24.Whatdotheunderlined words“jumponthatbandwagon”meaninthefirstparagraph?A.Share an apartment with you.B.Join you in what you're doing.C.Transform your way of living.D.Help you to make the decision.25.What was the attitude of the author's father toward buying groceries with jars?A.He disapproved of it.B.He was favorable to it.C.He was tolerant of it.D.He didn't care about it.26.What can we infer about the author?A.She tohave one's own personalspace at home.C.How to live a zero waste lifestyle in a household.D.Howtocontrol the budget when buying groceries.CA machine can now not only beat you at chess,it can also outperform you in st week,in a public debate in San Francisco,a software program called Project Debater beat its human opponents, includingNoaOvadia,Israel's former national debating champion.Brilliant though it is,Project Debater has some weaknesses. It takes sentences from its library of documents and prebuilt arguments and strings them together. This can lead to the kinds of errors no human would make.Such wrinkles will no doubt be ironed out,yet they also point to a fundamental problem. As Kristian Hammond, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Northwestern University, put it:“There's never a stage at which the system knows what it's talking about.”What Hammond is referring to is the question of meaning, and meaning is central to what distinguishes the least intelligent of humans from the most intelligent of machines.A computer works with symbols. Its program specifies a set of rules to transform one string of symbols into another. But it does not specify what those symbols mean.Indeed,to a computer, meaning is irrelevant.Humans,in thinking, talking, reading and writing, also work with symbols. But for humans, meaning is everything. When we communicate,we communicate meaning. What matters is not just the outside of a string of symbols, but the inside too,not just how theyare arrangedbut what theymean.Meaning emerges through a process of social interaction, not of computation, interaction that shapes the content of the symbols in our heads. The rules that assign meaning lie not just inside our heads, but also outside,in society,in social memory, social conventions and social relations. It is this that distinguishes humans from machines. And that's why, however astonishing Project Debater may seem, the tradition that began with Socrates and Confucius will not end with artificial intelligence.28.Why doesthe author mention Noa Ovadia in the first paragraph?A.To explain the use of a software program.B.To show the cleverness of Project Debater.C.To introduce the designerof Project Debater.D.To emphasize the fairness ofthe competition.29.What doestheunderlined word“wrinkles”inparagraph2referto?A.Arguments.B.Doubts.C.Errors.D.Differences.30.Whatis ProjectDebaterunable to do according to Hammond?A.Create rules.prehend meaning.C.Talk fluently.D.Identify difficult words.31.What can we learn from the last paragraph?A.Social interaction is key to understanding symbols.B.Thehuman brain has potential yet to be developed.C.Ancientphilosophersset good examples for debaters.D.Artificial intelligence ensures humans a bright future.DAccording to the Solar Energy Industry Association, the number of solar panels installed(安装)has grown rapidly in the past decade, and it has to grow even faster to meet climate goals. But all of that growth will take up a lot of space, and though more and more people accept the concept of solar energy, fewlike large solar panels to be installed near them.Solar developers want to put up panels as quickly and cheaply as possible,so they haven't given much thought to what they put under them.Often, they'll end up filling the area with small stones and using chemicals to control weeds. The result is that many communities, especially in farming regions, see solarfarmsas destroyers of the soil.“Solarprojects needto be good neighbors,”says Jordan Macknick, the head of the Innovative Site Preparation and Impact Reductions on the Environment(InSPIRE)project.“They need to be protectors of the land and contribute to the agricultural economy.”InSPIRE is investigating practical approaches to“low-impact”solar development, which focuses on establishing and operating solar farms in a way that is kinder to the land. One of the easiest low-impact solar strategies is providing habitat for pollinators(传粉昆虫).Habitat loss, pesticide use,and climate change have caused dramatic declines in pollinator populations over the past couple of decades, which has damaged the U.S.agricultural economy.Over28states have passed laws related to pollinator habitat protection and pesticide use.Conservation organizations put out pollinator-friendliness guidelines for home gardens, businesses, schools, cities—and nowthere are guidelines for solar farms.Over the past few years, many solar farm developers have transformed the space under their solar panels into a shelter for various kinds of pollinators, resulting in soil improvement and carbon reduction.“These pollinator-friendly solar farms can have a valuable impact on everything that's going on in the landscape,”saysMacknick.32.What do solar developers often ignore?A.Thedecline in the demand for solar energy.B.The negative impact of installing solar panels.C.The rising labor cost of building solar farms.D.The most recent advances in solar technology.33.What does InSPIRE aim to do?A.Improve the productivity of local farms.B.Invent new methods for controlling weeds.C.Make solar projects environmentally friendly.D.Promote the use of solar energy in rural areas.34.What is the purpose ofthe laws mentioned in paragraph4?A.To conserve pollinators.B.To restrict solar development.C.To diversify the economy.D.To ensure the supply of energy.35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.Pollinators:To Leave or to StayB.Solar Energy:Hope for the FutureC.InSPIRE:A Leader in
