Taos is a small town in New Mexico, America. Many people come here for a visit every year. They do not come to see the beautiful scenes or eat delicious food. They come to listen to a kind of strange sound: Taos Hum.

The word “hum” means a low sound that never stops. Why is the sound strange? Firstly, the Taos Hum that people hear is quite different. Someone says it sounds like a little bee flying around you. Others think it sounds like a car moving in a faraway place.

Secondly, no one knows where the sound comes from. Joe Mullins, a scientist from the University of New Mexico, is the first person to do research on the Taos Hum. He put sensitive equipment (敏感设备) in places where people could hear the hum, but the equipment could not “hear” any hum!

Many people try to explain the strange sound. Someone says it is a noise made by insects. Someone believes it must come from some secret government projects. Someone says there might be an underground UFO base (基地)! But up to this day, no one can make sure which is right.

It might be interesting for visitors to listen to the hum, but it is not for people who live in the town. They have to hear the sound all the time. That is really a hard life.

Do you know what are the world’s tallest animals? Have you ever been curious (好奇的) about how they sleep and drink? Here we will tell you how giraffes sleep and drink.

You may think it’s difficult for them to sleep, but they have no such problems because giraffes don’t often stop for a snooze (打盹). As they are so tall—males (雄性) can grow up to 18 feet, giraffes actually have the shortest sleep requirement of all mammals (哺乳动物), with an average of half an hour a day. When they sleep, they seldom lie down and sleep for minutes at a time, since it’s difficult for them to get up again and it’s dangerous in the wild. But the giraffe in the zoo sleeps around 4.6 hours per day, mostly at night. It usually sleeps lying down.

Drinking water may cause problems for the animals because their long necks are too short to reach the ground. To drink, they must spread their legs in an uncomfortable position,

which makes them easily hunted by other animals like Africa’s big cats. As a result, they get most of their water from the plants that they eat. They only need to drink water every few days.

Is it possible for kids to be connected with birds? Yes, if the bird is Harvey Beaks (青鸟哈维).

Harvey Beaks is a new animated (动画的) television series (系列节目). I recently talked to the show’s creator Greenblatt. He said he designed the series so kids would be able to connect to the experiences of an animated bird.

It took Greenblatt five years to turn his idea into a series. He said he first drew a child, and then came up with the idea to have the child be friends with a bird. Greenblatt began to see more of himself in the bird character, which would finally become Harvey Beaks.

Greenblatt and his team of writers had a few methods for coming up with story ideas. Sometimes, they remembered events from their childhood, and those were then changed for the show to be funnier and crazier. Other times, the team would think of an experience, such as a failure or a game, and built a story around the idea.

Kids voiced most of the characters on Harvey Breaks. I also talked with Madeleine Curry, a seventh grader, who voiced the part of Piri Piri. Her father does voice-overs (解说) ,which got her interested in doing voice work too. According to Curry, fans of the show are able to laugh at each episode (集) while also learning important lessons. “Harvey Beaks is a very sweet show,” said Curry. “You almost never see Harvey sad, and it’s nice to get to experience that in life because everyone can be a little happier sometimes.”

Red Nose Day (RND) is a well-known event in the UK. It is on the second or third Friday in March. It raises money for people in need in Africa and the UK.

Red Nose Day is organized by Comic Relief. This organization was set up by Richard Curtis and Lenny Henry in 1985. They wanted to use comedy and laughter to bring more attention to poverty (贫穷) in the UK and Africa, and make sure that everybody could have fun at the same time. That’s why Red Nose Day was born. The British celebrated the first Red Nose Day on February 5, 1988 and they celebrate it every two years now. A third of the money raised goes to projects (项目) in the UK and two thirds to projects in Africa.

People call it Red Nose Day because on this day many people buy a plastic (塑料的) red nose to wear. Even if someone doesn’t wear it, he will go and buy one. Some people put them on the front of their cars to show their support. The money made from selling plastic red noses goes to Comic Relief.

Today more and more building designers (设计师) are thinking about how to make buildings that are good for the environment. They use materials that are easy to find or recycle old materials to make new buildings. Here are some examples:

In August 2013, Shigeru Ban, a building designer from Japan, made a new church for people in Christchurch, New Zealand. The church is mainly made of cardboard (硬纸板). It stands 25 meters high, with a plastic top to protect the building from rain. The church can last up to 50 years, and it can be recycled.

Another example is from Taiwan. This building was built for a Flora Exhibition (植物博览会). The building is designed by Arthur Huang, and it is made of 1,500,000 recycled plastic bottles! The building is strong, beautiful and comfortable. It cost much less than other buildings in the exhibition.

The last example is made by Choi Jeong-Hwa, an artist from South Korea. He used old doors to decorate (装饰) an old, ten-floor building. He painted bright, beautiful colors on the doors. The building is a colorful surprise in the street!

The use of recycled materials to build public buildings is growing. They not only cost little, but are beautiful and good for the environment. Maybe soon, these buildings will appear in your city!

Your school days may be the best and happiest in your life. You should learn to get the most from them, and don’t waste this wonderful chance to learn.

Be positive (积极的) about school. Don’t say things are difficult or boring. Be interested in school life and your school subjects. Join lots of activities. Be quick to put your hand up. Go around the school with a big smile. Work hard. School isn’t a holiday camp. If you’re not working hard or you’re not learning, you’re wasting your time at school. Teachers cannot make everything pleasant and funny.

Keep fit. If you don’t eat a good breakfast, you’ll be thinking about food in class. If you go to bed late and don’t have enough sleep, you’ll be sleepy in class. Play some sports to keep your body strong.

Do today’s work today. Don’t say you’ll do things tomorrow. If you fall behind, it’s very difficult to catch up. You cannot finish a run if you rest all the time.

Don’t be too disappointed if things sometimes go badly. Everyone fails some tests, loses some matches or has bad days. Friends aren’t always good, and they sometimes say and do unpleasant things. Don’t let small problems seem very big and important.
