1The 2018 A-Level English Exam - A Kid's TakeWow, can you believe it? The big kids had to take theirA-Level English exam last year in 2018! That test must have been super hard. I'm just a little kid in elementary school, but I tried my best to understand the questions and answers. Let me tell you all about it!First up was the reading comprehension section. They had to read these giant passages and answer questions about them. One passage was about the history of video games. How cool is that? I would have aced that part for sure because I'm a pro gamer! The questions asked things like what year the first video game was created and what some of the most popular games were. Easy peasy for this gaming expert! Then there was a passage about climate change and the environment. That one seems a bit boring to me, but I know it's a really important topic. The questions asked students to summarize the main points and explain some of the causes andeffects of climate change. I may have struggled with that one since I'm just a kid and don't know too much science yet. But I'm sure all those smart older students wrote great answers. The writing section looked hard! Students had to write different types of essays and articles. One prompt asked them to give their opinion on whether PE classes should be mandatory in schools. As a kid who loves gym class and recess, I definitely would have said yes to keeping PE! We need time to run around and get our energy out. Another prompt wanted students to write a short story from the perspective of an inanimate object. How weird is that? Like writing as a pencil or a water bottle? I'd try my best, but I'm not sure how good my story would be.Then there were questions on grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary. Ugh, that's the boring stuff! But it's probably important for doing well on the exam. I'm still learning lots of those grammar rules in school. Vocabulary is fun though –I'm picking up new words all the time from books I read. The exam also had a section on spoken language skills. Students had to answer questions based on recordings of conversations and speeches. That sounds really hard to me! Listening carefully is one of the trickiest things. I often zone outwhen my teacher is talking. Hopefully I'll get better at listening by the time I'm old enough for my A-Levels.So yeah, that's my take on the 2018 A-Level English exam questions and answers! It seems crazy difficult to me as a little kid. I can't even imagine having to take a test like that. Those teenagers must be super smart and work really hard in school. I'll just be over here reading comics and playing video games for now. Maybe someday I'll be ready for an exam that intense. But ugh, not for a loooong time!篇22018 English A-Level Exam: A Kid's PerspectiveWow, the 2018 English A-Level exam was really hard! I'm just a kid in elementary school, but my older brother had to take it since he's in his last year of high school. He let me look at the questions after he was done and I have to say, I'm super glad I didn't have to answer those! The first section was all about reading comprehension. There were a few long passages to read and then tons of questions about analyzing the writing style, identifying themes, making inferences, and all that complicated stuff. One passage was about the history of some ancient civilization. Another was somereally old poem that didn't make any sense to me. My brother said understanding those passages and questions was like trying to read alphabet soup! Then there was a section on literary analysis. The students had to write essays analyzing specific novels, plays, and poetry collections that they had studied in their English courses. Can you imagine having to write a whole essay just analyzing one book? And these weren't even fun, modern books - they were all classics from like a billion years ago that nobody actualy enjoys reading anymore. Snooze fest!My personal favorite section was the creative writing part. Students had to choose from a handful of writing prompts and craft either a narrative story or a descriptive essay. One prompt was to write a story about going on an adventure. Another prompt asked students to describe their dream vacation destination in great detail. Those could actually be kind of fun for a kid to write about! Although knowing the exam graders, they probably wanted super serious, scholarly responses without much creativity or imagination. After the creative writing was a huge grammar section where they had to analyze sentences, identify parts of speech, explain proper usage of punctuation and capitalization, and prove theyknew all sorts of crazy grammar rules that nobody actually follows when speaking and writing in real life. Who even talks like that anyways? Not me!The very last section covered literary techniques and devicES like metaphor, simile, rhyme scheme, foreshadowing, paradox, and other fancy literary terms. Students had to identify examples of each technique in given excerpts. Then they had to explain how certain techniques were used to contribute to the overall meaning or effect of the written works. Sounds kind of complicated if you ask me!By the end of it all, my brother looked exhausted. He said it was one of the hardest tests he'd ever taken, with so many reading, writing, and analyzing tasks to complete in one sitting. I'll admit, some of the creative writing prompts piqued my interest. But having to write essays analyzing ancient literature and identify all those literary techniques and grammar rules? No thank you! I'll stick to reading Captain Underpants and watching Phineas and Ferb for now. When I'm in high school and have to take that crazy A-Level English exam, someone please remind me of this essay so I can start studying wayyyy in advance. Or maybe I'll just pursue a career in something that doesn't involve so much reading andwriting. Like a zookeeper or racecar driver! Now those jobs sound fun. Anyways, mad props to any students who can master all that reading, writing, and literary analysis required for theA-Level English tests. You're going to need those skills if you want to get into a good university. As for me, I'll keep working on mastering the art of good ol' show-and-tell!

In 2017, Wu Yibing became famous after winning the US Open boys’ tournament at 18 to become the first Chinese to win a major junior title, raising high hopes for the “Wonder Boy” to change the fortune of Chinese men in a sport long dominated (主导) by women’s success on the pro stage. In 2018, Wu won his first ATP Challenger title in Shanghai. However, the brutally (残酷地) competitive nature of men’s pro tennis hit the rising Wu with a tough reminder after multiple (多处) injuries — to his elbow, lower back, shoulder and wrist — forced him to be away from the ATP Tour for close to three years. He made his return last year and won three ATP Challenger titles before qualifying (取得资格) for the US Open. “Looking back, I feel like I wouldn’t have been here if not for the ups and downs over the past few years. I take all the difficulties and struggles as an asset (资产) that helps me become better now,” said Wu. “Of course there were a lot of doubts because I had surgery and the rehab (康复) wasn’t going well. The championship today was a payoff for all the hard work and everyone who’s supported me along the way.”4.What did Wu first start playing tennis for?A.Winning awards.B.Developing an interest.C.Killing time.D.Becoming thinner.5.Why was Wu absent from the ATP Tour for nearly three years?A.He wanted to change his major.B.He suffered from serious physical injuries.C.He didn’t stand out in training for the match.D.He can’t deal with the pressure of the A TP Tour.6.What can we learn from Wu’s statement?A.No cross, no crown.B.Well begun is half done.C.More haste, less speed.D.Time waits for no man.7.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.The Development of Chinese TennisB.The Power of Difficulties for AthletesC.The Pioneer of Chinese Tennis SportD.The First Chinese Male Winner of ATPWhen people think about improving their physical fitness, they often neglect (忽视) balance. Good balance is a necessary part of being physically fit and key to living a long life, according to research. It’s important for everyone, no matter your age.Older adults are most affected by poor balance. Falls are the leading cause of injury and death for those 65 and older, with nearly 30% in this age group reporting at least one fall in 2018, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But younger adults frequently fall down, too.Forty-eight percent of young adults reported falling at least once during one 16-week study. The falls most commonly happened during sports activities, with women in the study reporting more falls and fall-related injuries than men.Falls within the previous two years were reported by 18% of young adults (ages 20 to 45) in another study published in the journal BMC Public Health. That figure (数据) compared with 21% of middle-aged adults (46 to 65) reporting falls and 35% of those over 65. While falls among young adults were often connected with sports, falls by the middle-aged group were typicallyrelated to health problems and physical changes. Many factors (因素) can affect your balance outside of age, such as vision changes, brain injuries, overweight and a general lack of physical fitness. Even if you have no risk factors, simply neglecting to work regularly on your balance will result in increased instability (不稳定性).“Our body is conditioned to lose what we don’t regularly use and practice, and balance is no different,” said Susan Baxter.8.What role does a good balance play in our lives?A.It helps us live a healthy and long life.B.It enables us to build a perfect shape.C.It protects us from getting seriously sick.D.It has the power to make us look young.9.How does the author show the research results?A.By having a discussion.B.By following the time order.C.By raising questions.D.By giving a list of figures.10.In which situation are young adults likely to fall down?A.When a health problem comes up.B.When working regularly.C.When a physical change appears.D.When joining in a sport.11.What can we learn from what Susan Baxter said?A.We’ll lose our balance if we don’t practise it often.B.Our body is used to working in its own way.C.We should manage our body properly.D.We are naturally born with balance.A new report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) shows that global animal populations have dropped greatly since 1970. The report is based on information about 5,495 different species of animals around the world. The information was collected by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), which used it to create what it calls the “Living Planet Index” (LPI). The LPI focuses on vertebrates — animals with backbones, such as birds, fish, and mammals. The LPI report shows that between 1970 and 2020, the average size of these populations dropped by 73%.The LPI can be a little perplexing. It doesn’t show the change in the total number ofanimals on the planet. Instead, it shows the average change in the size of animal populations since 1970. For example, if one species dropped from 1,000 animals to 500, that’s a 50% drop. If another species dropped from 100,000 to 50,000, that’s also a 50% drop. The number of animals lost in the second population is much higher, but they would both count as a 50% drop for the LPI. But even if the numbers aren’t perfect, scientists agree that animal populations are dropping. And that’s a serious problem. The report shows that populations have dropped in all kinds of habitats (栖息地). Freshwater habitats, such as rivers and lakes, saw the biggest drop, averaging 85%, followed by land animals at 69%. In the oceans, the drop was56%. Geographically, Latin America experienced the greatest loss at 95%, while Africa’s animal populations fell by 76%, and Asia and the Pacific by 60%. Europe and North America had smaller drops, but they still saw a 33% drop since then.Human activities, including habitat destruction, farming, climate change, pollution, and over- hunting, are the primary cause. The WWF calls for urgent action to protect Earth’s wildlife, recommending that 30% of the world’s land, oceans, and freshwater be protected by 2030 and that humans change how they eat, farm, and produce energy.12.What does the LPI report show?A.The total number of animals on Earth.B.The habitats of different endangered animals.C.The average change in animal population sizes.D.The number of species that have already died out.13.What does the underlined word “perplexing” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A.Simple.B.Confusing.C.Exciting.D.Important.14.Based on the report, which region saw the largest average drop in animal populations?A.Europe.B.Latin America.C.North America.D.Asia and the Pacific.15.What recommendation does the WWF make to protect wildlife?A.Developing new farming technologies.B.Increasing the number of zoos worldwide.C.Introducing new animal species to endangered areas.D.Caring for the world’s land, oceans, and freshwater. If you live in a place that gets a good deal of snow and ice each winter, you already know what the next few months may hold: snowball fights, hot chocolate, and so on! 16 At the first sign of snow or ice in the forecast, drivers will be out spreading salt on the roadways. You may also see people spreading salt on their sidewalks and driveways.17 It helps prevent ice from forming on the pavement, making it much safer to drive during winter weather. Are you wondering how exactly salt makes the roads safer? You may have heard people say salt melts ice. However, the process is a bit more complicated than that. It has to do with a concept called freezing point depression (冰点降低).Liquid water (液态水) becomes frozen ice at 0℃. 18 When salt is added to water, it makes it harder for water molecules to freeze. In effect, this lowers the freezing point of water to about -9.4℃. Below that temperature, even roads that have been salted may be covered in ice.Salt offers a cheap and effective way of making roads safer during winter months. 19 Rock salt used to treat roads ends up in local bodies of water and even in ground water. In large quantities, this can reduce the amount of freshwater in an area and negatively impact plants and animals that rely on it.Salted roads may also be the cause of increased chloride (氯化物) levels in nearby lakes and rivers. 20 In addition, the salt is corrosive and can damage roads, bridges, and vehicles. These impacts have led some groups to advocate other solutions for icy roads, like sand. Some even suggest using sugar or juice in place of salt.A.This is its freezing point.B.Why do people put salt on roads in winter?C.Are you looking forward to winter weather?D.This chemical can do harm to plants and animals.E.However, it also has a negative effect on the environment.F.Of course, along with the snow, salt trucks become a common sight.G.The salt spread on roads and sidewalks often appears gray or brown. On Sunday, 30-year-old Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya set a new world record for the fastest marathon ever run by a woman, finishing in 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 56 seconds. She’s the first21 ever to finish a marathon in under 2 hours and 10 minutes.A marathon is a 22 race, covering 42.195 kilometers.
