I teach 15 to 18-year-olds, so I try to make my lessons as fun as possible. Most of my students try really hard in lessons and they are enthusiastic about learning English. However, I sometimes have to nudge(推)students who have fallen asleep in the middle of a lesson! One or two students fall asleep in my class every day. I solve this problem by explaining to my students that if I catch them sleeping then they have to answer a question about the day’s learning in front of the class. This has worked very well in my lessons, but I still wanted to know why I had such sleepy students. This is what I have discovered:At my school the first lesson of the day starts at 7:30 am and the last lesson does not finish until 9:30 pm. The students get 10 minutes of free time between each class, plus longer break time for their lunch and dinner. During their lunch break at about 1:30 pm, the school is quiet and the playground is deserted, because every classroom is full of students who are fast asleep. I have also found out that students are expected to attend school on the weekends for extra lessons. When I was a teenager in London, I started school at 8:30 am and finished at 3:30 pm every day. I had weekends to myself and had dinner with my family or friends, usually in my own home. Discovering how hard my students work made me more understanding about their accidental nap(打盹)in the classroom!4. What is it that upsets the author?A. Students aren’t interested in English.B. Chinese students are short of sleep.D. Chinese students have better grades.CIn a forest there was a lake. In this lake there lived a crab(蟹). The crab’s best friend was a swan(天鹅), who lived in the same lake. One year, every time the swan laid an egg, a snake living by the lake would come and eat it up. One day, the swan went to the crab and said, “That cruel snake eats all my eggs in the nest(窝). What can I do?”The crab decided to help his best friend. As he ate, he kept following the fish trail to the snake’s house. Finally, the mongoose reached the house of the snake. When the snake saw the mongoose, he thought the mongoose was there to attack him. They started fighting until the snake was finally killed.Watching this behind the tree, the swan and the crab became very happy. Some days later, the mongoose, looking for more fish, came upon the swan’s nest. There the mongoose found the eggs of the swan. He immediately ate all of them. And when I bought a house several years later, my dad painted it by himself in very hot weather. All he asked was to talk to him, but I was too busy in those days.Four years ago, my dad visited me. No one drinks diet sodas for the taste. People drink diet sodas in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it. Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study.Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn’t drink diet sodas. "What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain,"said Sharon Fowler. The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years. While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations. Nutrition expert, Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet sodas, they don’t lose weight a t all. "We weren’t seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us", said Rogers. So why would diet soda cause weight gain? No one knows for sure yet, but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet sodas, and so over-compensate for the missing calories.A related study found some sweeteners (甜味剂) raised blood sugar levels in some mice. "Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky, said Helen P. Hazud a, professor at the University of Texas’s school of medicine. "They may be free of calories, but not of consequences."12.People drink diet sodas to ____________.A.enjoy its taste B.stay in fashionC.achieve weight loss D.gain more energy13.The new study suggests that drinking diet sodas ____________.A.causes people to become heavier B.helps people to be healthierC.makes people much thinner D.offers people more calories14.We can learn from the passage that ____________.A.regular sodas make people lose more weight B.diet soda drinkers tend to eat more foodC.diet sodas do help reduce calories D.most blood diseases come from diet sodas15.The underlined word "They"in the last paragraph probably refers to "____________".A.sweeteners B.diet sodas and artificial sweetenersC.sodas D.diet soda drinkers and sweetener takers二、七选五Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving Day in the USA, falling on the Friday after the fourth Thursday in November.16.Many people have a day off work or choose to take a day from their annual leave on Black Friday. We lived on a farm and, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems too.One big disadvantage is money---it costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment(娱乐活动). Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising --- and , what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is , when you are in your teens(十几岁)or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.21. What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child?A. Staying on the farm.B. Moving to the countryside.C. Leaving home for the city.D. Running away from the school.22. Which of the following is true about the writer?A. He is very old now.B. He is in good health.C. He prefers driving a car.D. He lives in the city now.23. In the passage, the writer tries to __________.A. express his opinions about way of lifeB. describe his life in the countrysideC. show an interest in the outside worldD. persuade the reader to live in the city24. How is the passage mainly developed?A. By inferring.B. By comparing.C. By listing examples.D. By giving explanations.BPeople believes that climbing can do good to health. Where can you learn the skill of climbing then? If you think that you have to go to the mountains to learn how to climb, you’re wrong. Many Americans are learning to climb in city gyms(体育馆). Here, people are learning on special climbing walls. The climbing wall goes straight up and has small holding places for hands and feet. How do people climb the wall? To climb, you need special shoes and a harness(保护带) around your chest to hold you. There are ropes(绳索)tied to your harness. The ropes hold you in place so that you don’t fall. A beginner’s wall is usually about 15 feet high, and you climb straight up. There are small pieces of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to. Sometimes it’s easy to see the next piece of metal. Sometimes, it’s not. The most difficult part is to control your fear. It’s normal for humans to be afraid of falling, so it’s difficult not to feel fear. But when you move away from the wall, the harness and the ropes hold you, and you begin to feel safe. You move slowly until you reach the top.Climbing attracts people because it’s good exercise for almost everyone. You use your whole body, especially your arms and legs. This sport gives your body a complete workout. When you climb, both your mind and your body can become stronger.25. What can we infer from the passage?A. People are fairly interested in climbing nowadays.B. It is impossible to build up one’s body by climbing.C. People can only learn the skill of climbing outdoors.D. It is always easy to see holding places in climbing.26. The most difficult thing to do in wall climbing is _______.A. to tie ropes to your harnessB. to control your fearC. to move away from the wallD. to climb straight up27. The word “workout” underlined in the last paragraph most probably means _________.A. settlementB. exerciseC. excitementD. tiredness28. Why does the author write this passage?A. To tell people where to find gyms.B. To prove the basic need for climbingC. To encourage people to climb mountains.D. To introduce the sport of wall climbingCSome people think that as more and more people have televisions in their homes, fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers. Why read an article in the newspaper, when the TV news can bring you the information in a few minutes and with pictures? Why read the life story of a famous man, when a short television program can tell you all that you want to know?Television has not killed reading, however. Today, newspapers sell in very large numbers. And books of every kind are sold more than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and enjoyment. Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are printed today as paperbooks (平装本), which are quite cheap. A paperback collection of short stories, for example, is always cheaper than an evening at the cinema or the theater, and you can keep a book for ever and read it many times.Books are a wonderful provider of knowledge and pleasure and some types of books should be in every home. Every home should have a good dictionary. A good encyclopedia (百科全书), though expensive, is useful, too, because you can find information on any subject. Besides, you can have such books as history books, science textbooks, cookbooks, and collections of stories and poems. Then from time to time you can take a book of poems off your shelves and read the thoughts and feelings of your favorite poets.29. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A. TV programs are a chief provider of knowledgeB. cinemas are the best choice in getting informationC. reading is a cheap way of learning and having funD. newspapers are an expensive way to enjoy oneself30. What does the sentences “Television has not killed reading, however” underlined in the second paragraph suggest?A. People only need reading, though.B. Reading is still necessary today.C. Reading is more fun than television.D. Watching television doesn’t help reading. 31.Which of the following is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?A.Types of books. B.Kinds of dictionaries.C.Lists of history books. D.Collections of stories and poems.32. What can we learn from the passage?A. Fewer and fewer people will buy books.B. A good dictionary should be kept in every home.C. Books with hard covers sell better than paperbooks.D. More people like TV programs about famous men.DTwenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.”I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing. At dawn, she suddenl y said,” I’m tired. Let’s go now.”We drove in silence to the address she had given me.“How much do I owe you?” she asked.“Nothing.” I said.“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I answered.Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. But they would do well to remember that a new choice is available --- micro-homes.Fondly called "tiny houses," these houses have all living necessities in a small package, including kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Generally under 50 square meters, most tiny houses can hold just one or two people though some claim the space for more. What's lost in size is not lost in designas these homes are often quite modern in design.Besides an attractive appearance, tiny houses can also have practical features. Making the best of urban space, the 72-to-122-centimeter-wide Keret House in Warsaw, the world's narrowest home, filled in an alley(小巷). The home Ecocapsule uses solar power, wind power and rainwater collection to enable its owner to live practically anywhere.Although micro-homes are attractive, there are a few disadvantages to consider before getting comfortable on a minicouch. Moving into a tiny house, you should throw away unnecessary things. It is also mostly impossible to invite guests. And finally, a micro-home is likely atemporary(暂时的)living choice for most people since they will probably start families and own more things.Though the limitation will scare some, there is usually a benefit. A small size results in low prices and small bills, making tiny houses easier to save up for.And though you won't have many things around the house, it makes it easy and simple to keep it clean. Micro-homes are also eco-friendly, which can't be matched by other homes. They probably aren't for everyone or forever, but when it comes to your next (or first) home, they could be just what you need.4.What can be learnt about micro-homes from Paragraph 2? ______A.People can't take a package into the tiny houses.B.All of the houses canhold more than two people.C.These houses areconvenient though tiny in size.D.Such houses are poorlydesigned due to the small size.5.The author developsParagraph 3 mainly ______ .A.by example B.by compC.by order in space D.by caus6.Micro-homes areespecially suitable for______ .A.a young person who hasmany thingsB.a person who doesn'thave much moneyC.a family wanting toprotect environmentD.a family hoping tosettle down in a city7.What can be the besttitle for the text? ______A.East or west, home isthe best.B.Micro-h C.Home-hunting --- noeasy matter! I wanted to go somewhere new and exciting. This became the theme of the next twenty years. I'd spend the whole year counting down to my next holiday, and then as soon as I left I'd begin to dread having to return home.Year after year.Ten years ago, I decided to build a life that I didn't want to escape from. I knew I wanted to travel in the long term, but I didn't have a lot of money or savings, and there is no one paying for my adventures. I was able to save ﹩16,000 over those five years, which was enough to keep me on the road for a couple of years. But what if two years wouldn't be enough? Before leaving, I began to spend my time in making plans that would allow me to work anywhere that had an Internet connection. At the time, I was studying for a master degree in physics. While studying, I came up with a list of my interests and skills and began researching into a way to do these anywhere. If I could make money from it and if I could do it online, then it was something worth going after.I created a writing file that would help me to find free writing jobs.I researched English and physics teaching online, and built travelwebsites to earn income through sales and advertising. Most of these failed, but I didn't give up.The work I do has changed over the years and it's still changing now. Now, I pay my traveling through several different things.I'm the Student Travel Expert for About.com, and a senior writer for Too Many Adapters, a travel technology website. In addition, I will have my first book published this summer. I also offer a travel planning service to help readers prepare for their travels abroad. To reach this point, where I can cover my expenses and travel full-time,took many, many years of hard work. For me,the freedom makes it worth it.With everything set in place, finally my dreams came true.8.What does theunderlined word "dread" mean inParagraph 1? ______A.fear B.forgetC.miss D.conside9.The author has takenthe following jobs except______ .A.placing advertisements online B.offerin C.teaching physics in auniversity D.free wr 10.Which of thefollowing best describes theauthor? ______A.open-minded B.kind-heC.cold-blooded D.strong-11.What is the passagemainly about? ______A.Why the author desired freedom.B.Why the C.How the author made his living.D.How theLet’s face i t. No onedrinks diet sodas for the taste.People drink diet sodas in thehope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it. Hazuda, professor at the University of Texas’s school of medicine. "They maybe free of calories, but not of consequences."12.People drink diet sodas to ____________.A .enjoy its tasteB .stay in fashionC .achieve weight lossD .gain more energy 13.The new study suggests that drinking diet sodas ____________.A .causes people to become heavierB .helps people to be healthierC .makes people much thinnerD .offers people more calories 14.We can learn from the passage that ____________.A .regular sodas make people lose more weightB .diet soda drinkers tend to eat more foodC .diet sodas do help reduce caloriesD .most blood diseases come from diet sodas 15.The underlined word "They " in the last paragraphprobablyrefersto "____________".A .sweetenersB .diet sodas and artificial sweetenersC .sodasD .diet soda drinkers and sweetener takers 二、七选五Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving Day in the USA, falling on the Friday after the fourth Thursday inNovember. 16.Many people have a day off work or choose to take a day from their annual leave on Black Friday.
