But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a state of fatigue(疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we could find it full of fatigue toxins and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what make us tired? Some scientists declared that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional attitudes. One of England’s most all standing scientists, J.A. Hadfield, says,“ The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, A famous American scientist g oes even further. He declares,“ One hundred percent of the fatigue of a sitting worker in a good health is due to emotional problems”.What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No. A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated—those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.4. What surprised the scientists a few years ago?A.Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer’s blood.B.Albert Einstein didn’t feel worn out after a day’s work.C.The brain could work for many hours without fatigue.D.A mental worker’s blood was filled with fatigue toxins.5. According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired?A.Unpleasant emotions. B.Challenging mental work.C.Endless tasks D.Physical labor.6. We can infer from the passage that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to ______.A.have some good food B.discover fatigue toxinsC.exercise regularly D.enjoy their work7. What is the best title for this passage?A.How long can our brain work? B.Why is our brain tired from work?C.Can we work like Albert Einstein? D.When should we take a break in work? Most of us trust our doctors even when they hand us a prescription for a drug we can’t pronounce. But natural, holistic (整体的) products are fully in vogue nowadays, and the Internet has created a way for non-experts to become as or more informed as their general practitioner when it comes toobscure treatment methods. “People are now more willing to take their health and wellness into their own hands,” says Danielle Hardee, a wellness advocate for Do TERRA International.Oddly enough, until fairly recently, Hardee was not one of those people. Her first experience with essential oils came in treating her pet bulldog. After seeking suggestions for the sickly pet on Facebook, a fellow fosterer told Hardee about certain oils she could try applyi ng to the animal’s skin. Pairing her curiosity with healthy skepticism, Hardee dove deep into researching the safety of the oils. “I was very happy with everything I found,” she says. “I started not just using them on the foster dog, but also our son, who needed the benefits of the respiratory support.” While the dog’s recovery was soon apparent, the benefits for her son were almost immediate. The oils in question are considered “essential” not due to any proven vitality, but because they contain the essence of the plants from which they are extracted. Peppermint, lavender and citruses are among the most common on the market today, but numerous essential oils have been in use for several centuries. After seeing how beneficial the concentrated liquids were to both the two-legged and four-legged members of her family, Hardee soon found herself teaching essential oil classes. “It became something I felt so strongly about, I had to share it,” she says. The classes quickly grew in size and geographical span and Hardee soon became an advocate for doTERRA International, a natural nutrition and wellness company. As growing popularity pushes essential oils into the broader market, Hardee recommends curious customers proceed with caution concerning quality and purity. Hardee believes the effects of quality oils will be the evidence that helps them prevail. “I’m not a holistic health guru (专家),” she emphasizes. “I’m just seeing it with my own eyes.”8. Why did Hardee begin to support do TERRA International?A.Her essential oil classes quickly grew. B.She learned treatment methods onFacebook.C.Her family benefited from the essentialoil.D.She felt strongly about the essential oil. 9. Why are those oils considered ”essential“?A.Because they are used to save people’s lives. B.Because they are taken from the essence of plants.C.Because they are essential to patients’ recovery. D.Because they are proven to be useful and energetic.10. What makes natural, holistic products popular according to Hardee?A.The internet which has created a way for them to be known.B.The effects of the products people can see with their own eyes.C.The curiosity people have about quality products.D.The determination of people to control their own health.11. What is Hardee’s suggesti on for curious customers?A.They should buy those good and pure oils. B.They should choose any popular oil product.C.They should start their own essential oil class. D.They should question the effects of the oils at times. On June 6th Columbia University announced that it will no longer co-operate with US News & World Report’s undergraduate rankings. It is the first top-notch institution to do so. Might its departure be the start of a mass departure?Columbia’s decision follows a rankings scandal last year. In February 2022 one of Columbia’s own maths professors accused the college of fudging its data in several areas. The university later admitted to having used “outdated and/or incorrect methodologies”.In the 1980s prospective students started to expand their college search beyond their local area, and it was hard to learn about universities and compare them. Hence, US News began ranking America’s top universities in 1983, and has released its findings annually since 1988.Colleges have gone to great lengths to move up in the ratings. Richard Freeland, Northeastern University’s former president, capped class sizes and hired faculty to improve its spot; it moved from 127th in 2003 to 44th this year. Others went too far. A dean at Temple Universit y’s business school was sentenced to prison and was ordered to pay a $250,000 fine after being found guilty of fraud in relation to artificially inflating his programme’s rankings. The ranking system used to seem unstoppable. Universities have tried to ditch it before, only to find that doing so can backfire badly. US News still ranks non-participating universities, using publicly available information, and the data often do not go in their favour. Reed College, a liberal-arts college, stopped taking part in 1995. It tumbled from the top quartile to the bottom. Columbia did not submit data for this year’s analysis, citing concerns about Dr Thaddeus’s claims, and its ranking fell from second in 2021-22 (tied with Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to 18th in 2022-23 (tied with the University of Notre Dame).Recently the mood has begun to change, however, especially among graduate schools. In 2022, of the 15 highest-ranked law schools, only the University of Chicago submitted data. Some undergraduate schools have already opted out this year (Rhode Island School of Design, Colorado College, Stillman College), but none are as prestigious as Columbia. In May US News announced changes to its ranking methodology. It is moving away from metrics that rely on reputation and towards student outcomes. One way or another, the rankings—and universities more broadly—are in a state of constant change.12. What is true about the US News undergraduate rankings?A.It faked the information for the ratings. B.It filled an information gap at one time.C.It promoted the quality of higher education. D.It has been released every year for 40 years.13. If a college does not cooperate with US News, ______.A.it will be ordered to pay a fine B.it will be excluded from the listC.its ranking will suffer consequently D.its spot in the ranking won’t be affected 14. The underlined word “capped” in the fourth paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.A.limited B.increased C.inflated D.maintained15. It can be inferred from the passage that US News undergraduate rankings may focus more on______ in the future.A.scores given by former students B.donations from all walks of lifeC.evaluations from other colleges D.earnings for college graduatesIn China under imperial rule, National Day was a celebration of the Emperor’s birthday or his rise to the throne. On October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong declared the formation of the People’s Republic of China. 16 The holiday is held annually in Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China. The first seven days of October are referred to as the Golden Week. This is a time of travel and leisure that is celebrated differently in various parts of China. People in cities often travel to rural areas to relax and enjoy the quiet surroundings. People from urban areas also travel to other cities throughout China to take part in celebrations. 17 Each year, a large National Day celebration is held in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.Beijing’s National Day festivals are filled with military performan ces, food vendors, live music, and various other activities. In Beijing and other cities, musical and dance concerts are held to celebrate National Day. Crafts, painting, and a range of other activities can be enjoyed by people of various ages.18 This fireworks show is approved by the Chinese government and some of the highest quality rockets and explosives are used to fill the sky with sparkling colors of gold and red.In addition to patriotic celebrations, National Day in China is also a time for people to enjoy being with their families. Family members of all ages will often use this as an opportunity to travel to a central location to reconnect after months of working. 19Although National Day is entered around patriotism and China’s history, Nation al Day is also a time of shopping. 20 So people should put a bit of money to the side and use this as an opportunity to purchase some of the things that have been on their wish lists for a while.Dorothy Casterline was an American researcher, writer and poet. B.Establish a music band with friends. C.Copy songs and styles of famous singers. D.Mix vocal exercises with self-motivation. 2.According to the text, singing practice can help you ________.A.live a positive life B.land a place in chorusC.create music strategies D.strengthen bonds with friends3.The text is targeted at those who ________.A.lack confidence in singing B.run a band or a music studioC.want to register for a music course D.desire to win Grammy Awards“Can we eat this one, Dad?” my four-year-old daughter, Alicia, asks. We’re on one of our Thursday adventures, searching the nearby woods for eatable mushrooms. She’s pointing at a bright-red cap covered with white dots. I pull out my handy mushroom-identification app, which notes that Amanita muscaria, while eatable if prepared properly, is also a known hallucinogen (致幻剂). I have a firm “tell them the truth and be as precise as possible” philosophy and explain what the app says, and that I don’t think our Thursday adventures are ready to get quite that adventurous yet.Watching your kids learn new skills is extraordinarily rewarding, but I’ve experienced more personal growth than I have at any other point in my life.Last year, after a winter of practicing skiing on the green tracks for beginners each week, Alicia was french-frying her way down blues and even attempted her first black. That month also witnessed me visiting the mountain more times than in the 15 years combined and I’ve got myself a partner f or life. It’s not all easy—but sometimes that’s the point. Alicia practices the violin every day, and although she enjoys it, even 15 minutes of practice can upset her. The trick, I’ve found, is to let her watch me try to get better at something, too. I start taking piano lessons at 41 years old with the idea that if she sees me struggling as I practice and then improve, she’ll understand that things don’t come easy, even forgrown-ups. I know there’s going to be a time when I’ll end up on the sideline che ering her on as she finds her own passions. I’m okay with this, and I’m hoping that by then she’ll carry the joy of practice and knowledge through life.4.What does the father imply by saying “I’ve got myself a partner for life.”?A.It is rewarding to learn new skills. B.Skiing has become his lifelong hobby.C.He will explore more with his daughter. D.His daughter will accompany him forever. 5.Why does the father start learning to play the piano?A.To prove it is never too old to learn. B.To set a good example for his daughter.C.To experience the joy of piano practice. D.To share with his daughter musical knowledge. 6.Which of the following can best describe the father?A.Rigid and humorous. B.Cautious and inspiring.C.Creative and thoughtful. D.Ambitious and patient.7.Which can be a suitable title for the text?A.The Thrill of the Skill B.Practice Makes PerfectC.Like Father, Like Daughter D.The Power of KnowledgePlastic fishing nets, the so-called ghost nets, abandoned yearly in the sea—about 1 million tons—are more than just rubbish; they’re a killer. Fish, sea birds, and turtles get caught in the netting and die, with more species at risk.Much shocked at this, Pranveer Singh Rathore, a materials-science engineer and materials R&D manager at Samsung, and his team set themselves the task of giving new life to the deadly nets. Last month, Samsung revealed a new line of Galaxy products made in part from recycled plastic fishing nets for the first time. The company estimates this year alone it can recycle over 50 tons of ocean-bound plastic into the key components that will go into its smartphones, tablets, and computers, thus taking a bite out of the global ghost nets problem. It’s no small task to give waste fishing nets a second act. The nets are ty pically made of a substance called nylon which tends to dramatically degrade (降解) the longer it sits in the ocean and is exposed to the sun. “This makes it nearly impossible to use abandoned fishing nets directly,” Rathore explains. Besides, high-performance smartphone, tablet, or PC has to be waterproof and can survive severe weather. The nylon in the fishing nets falls far short of that level of durability (耐用).To deal with that problem, Samsung last summer teamed up with two partners: one to collect and transform the nets into tiny nylon pellets (颗粒) while the other to strengthen their toughness and durability. The end result: The partners hit upon an eco-friendly and high-performance plastic material that’s being used to build the component parts for i ts latest line of products. For example, two parts of the Galaxy S22 mobile phone—the key bracket and the inner cover—are made of these fishing-net plastic materials. Samsung aims to use even more upcycled materials in future product lines.“That’s the hope for the globe and our mission,” Rathore smiles.8.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refer to?A.Rubbish in the sea. B.Recycling the deadly nets.C.Ocean species’ extinction.D.Ghost nets’ threat to sea life.9.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?A.The low level of durability of nylon. B.The second act of waste fishing nets.C.The great difficulty in reusing ghost nets. For help, I called Ja mes Danckert, a psychologist who studies boredom at the University of Waterloo in Canada. “A lot of people think about being bored as being lazy. And it’s absolutely not that,” he says. “Bored people want to be engaged with their world, eager to do something satisfying and exciting. But any attempt to do so is failing.”That means boredom is usually very upsetting. And it can have physical consequences. In one of his experiments, Danckert made people extremely bored by showing them a video of two people hanging clothes to dry. He found that when people got bored, their hearts beat faster and their levels of a hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) went up, compared to when they watched another video that made them sad. These physical changes were signs that boredom w as stressing them out. “It’s not like having a full-on panic attack,” Danckert says. But it’s certainly enough to make boredom unpleasant.Let’s come back to if boredom can kill you. Back in the 1980s, scientists asked people who worked for the British government a whole bunch of questions, including how bored they felt in their daily lives. The study tracked the participants over time. When any one of them died, the survey recorded the cause of death. In 2010, two researchers matched up these causes of de ath with the participants’ level of boredom. It turned out that people who said they were more bored were also more likely to have died of heart disease. “We know that prolonged exposure to stress is bad for your health,” Danckert says. A single boring day can’t kill you. But if you’re always bored, the stress could add up into something dangerous.“Oh no,” you might be thinking. “School is boring, my friends are boring, everything is boring! What’s going to happen to me?” Don’t worry, Danckert says: “As you get older, you get less bored,” mainly because you gain more independence and have to get busy to achieve your long-term goals. Andtrust me: that’s anything but boring.12.According to James Danckert, people feel bored because ________.A.they are too lazy to do anything B.they can’t gain excitement in lifeC.they are too frightened to have a try D.they can’t fully understand boredom13.What can we learn from paragraph 2?A.Doing housework will make people bored. B.People’s heart rate increases with bor edom. C.Physical changes can lead to extreme boredom. D.Watching something sad is a boring experience. 14.What does the underlined word “prolonged” in paragraph 3 mean?A.Continued. B.Repeated. C.Sudden. D.Active.15.What does Danckert recommend to save people from boredom?A.Depending on friends. B.Setting long-term goals.C.Keeping yourself occupied. D.Trusting people around you.二、七选五Rene Campbell has devoted most of her life to shaping her figure into one completely against what society thinks a woman should look like.“I was always very insecure about my body image, as everyone seemed to know for sure that women needed to look a cer tain way,” she says when reflecting on her motivation to transform herself.____16____ For quite some time, she struggled with eating disorders because she was trying to keep her weight really low and appear skinny, like the women on magazine covers. ____17____ It was then that she became attracted by the way these seemingly confident women held themselves. However, building her dream body—gaining over 85 pounds, going from a size 8 to 14—has had its challenges, too. “____18____ When I tell them that I am a female bodybuilder, the first reaction is,‘Muscles for women are just not attractive,’” Campbell says. If we think of what we happily might have been, and then of what we are, we cannot but admit the total failure or the helpless insufficiency of our education.Looking back on those years upon years which we spent in school, we know that something was wrong. If we will remember, we did not, at the time, exactly approve of the school system. Many of us, in fact, went in for sabotages. Our favorite brand of sabotage was the “withdrawal of efficiency” — in our case a kind of unconscious passive resistance. Good-natured onlookers, such as our parents or the board of education, might have thought that we were leaning something all the while; but that’s just where we fooled them! There were, of course, a few of us who really learned and remembered everything — who could state off-hand, right now, if anybody asked us, in what year Norman the Conqueror landed in England. But the trouble is that so few people ask us!There was one bit of honesty in our schooling — at its very end. They called that ending a Commencement. And so indeed we found it. Confused, unprepared, out of touch with the realities, we commenced then and there to learn what life is like. We found it discouragingin a thousand ways; but the thing which struck us at the time most forcibly was that it was in every respect quite unlike school. One could not cram for a job as if it were an examination; one could not get in the good graces of a machine as if it were a teacher; the docility which won high “marks” in school was called lack oforiginality in the business world, dullness in social life, stupidity in the realm of love. We had been quite carefully prepared to go on studying and attending classes and taking examinations; but the real world was not like that. So, what difference does schooling make, to us or to the world? And what to us now are those victories and humiliations, the failure or success of school?12. What is the purpose of this article?A.To complain about the educational system.B.To encourage readers to get educated in school.C.To discuss about how to get good education in school.D.To talk about the relationship between school and society.13. What does the underlined word “sabotage” in 2nd paragraph most probably mean?A.an unconscious act of destruction B.the low ability to be efficientC.a deliberate strategy of disrespect D.the active resistance to success14. What does the author mean by the last sentence of the 2nd paragraph?A.Not many understand knowledge learned from education.B.Too much dead knowledge is given to students in school.C.Few people are interested in educational questions.D.The more questions you ask the more trouble you face.15. What is the main idea of the 3rd paragraph?A.Commencements shouldn’t be carried out in schools.B.School values are not consistent with outside realities.C.We have attended too many classes and examinations.D.WE should be educated on different aspects at school.二、七选五Falling asleep or coming down from anxiety might never be as easy as 1-2-3, but some experts believe a different set of numbers—4-7-8—comes much closer to doing the trick.“What a lot of sleep difficulties are all about is people who struggle to fall asleep because their mind is buzzing,” said Rebecca Robbins, an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School.“16 And that’s exactly what we need to dobefore we go to bed.”The 4-7-8 method doesn’t require any equipment or specific setting, but when you’re initially learning the exercise, you should sit with your back straight, according to Weil. Practicing in a calm, quiet place could help, said Robbins. 17During the entire practice, place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue behind your upper front teeth, as you’ll be exhaling (呼气) through your mouth around your tongue. Then follow these steps, according to Weil:● Completely exhale through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.● 18● Hold your breath for a count of seven.● Exhale through your mouth, making a whoosh sound for a countof eight.● Repeat the process three more times for a total of four breath cycles.● Keeping to the ratio of four, then seven and then eight counts is more important than the time you spend on each phase, according to Weil.● “19 With practice you can slow it all down and get used to inhaling and exhaling more and more deeply,” his website advised. When you’re stressed out, your sympathetic nervous system (交感神经系统)— responsible for your fight-or-flight response — is overly active. This makes you feel overstimulated and not ready to relax and transition into sleep, Rebecca said. “An active sympathetic nervous system can cause a fast heart rate as well as rapid and shallow breathing.”The 4-7-8 breathing practice can help activate your parasympathetic nervous system — responsible for resting and digesting — which reduces sympatheticactivity. 20 Activating the parasympathetic systemalso gives an anxious brain something to focus on besides “why am I not sleeping?” Weil said.A.Breathe out some air for a count of four.B.It can put the body in a state easier for restful sleep, he added. C.Once you get the hang of it, you can use the technique while lying in bed.D.But if you’re a beginner, you could feel a little lightheaded a t first, Rebecca said.E.Close your mouth and quietly inhale through your nose to a mental count of four.F.But exercises like the 4-7-8 technique give you the opportunity to practice being at peace.G.If you have trouble holding your breath, speed the exercise up but keep the ratio (consistent) for the three phases.三、完形填空Charlie Plumb was a Navy jet pilot.
