第8讲 :礼貌原则
A child who is not allowed to say anything but“No, thank you”at home, will not mortify this mother in public by screaming“I hate steak, I want ice-cream!” (Emily Post, Etiquette, 1922) Instancing the rudeness of waiters, Andrew Billen quoted one as saying “I don’t know, can you?” in reply to his question, “Can you order now?”. If Mr. Billen had been taught good manners as a child, he would have asked “May we order now?”... Mr. Billen should learn proper manners himself before complaining about the lack of niceness in others. ( Letter to the editor of the Evening Standard, 25 November 1998)
