In Salt Lake City there were 69 arrests. But those captured were anything but terrorists, most of them illegal immigrants from Central or South American. Authorities said the undocumented worker s illegal status made them open to blank mall(讹诈)by terrorists. Many immigrants in Salt Lake City were angered by the arrests and said they felt as if they were being treated like disposable goods.Mayor Anderson said those feelings were justified to a certain extent. “We re saying we want you to work in these places. We re going to look the other way in terms of what our laws are, and then when it s convenient for us, or when we can try to make a point in terms of national security, especially after Sept.11, then you re disposable. There are whole families being uprooted for all of the wrong reasons.” Anderson said.If Sept.11 had never happened, the airport workers would not have been arrested and could have gone on quietly living in America, probably indefinitely. 2014吉林教师招聘英语模拟试题(阅读理解)一吉林教师考试交流群:279620409一、For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do?Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents' point of view ,the only cause of their fight is their adolescents' complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feet trapped. In this article. I'll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no - win situation is quarrels over unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teen's hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child's failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right, it doesn't matter what the topic is politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg--the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority someone who actually knows something and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they'll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.1.Why does the author compare the parent-teen war to a border conflict?()A.Because both can continue for generations.B.Because both are about where to draw the line.C.Because neither has any clear winner.D.Because neither can be put to an end.2.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?()A.The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict.B.The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict.C.The teens cause their parents of misleading them.D.The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.3.Parents and teens want to be right because they want to()A.give orders to the otherB.know more than the otherC.gain respect from the otherD.get the other to behave properly4.What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?()A.Causes for the parent-teen conflicts.B.Examples of the parent-teen war.C.Solutions for the parent-teen problems.D.Future of the parent-teen relationship.二、Edward Wilson is America' s, if not the world' s, leading naturalist. In The Future of Life, he takes us on a tour of the world' s natural resources(资源). How are they used? What has been lost ?What remains and is it able to continue with the present speed of use? Wilson also points out the need to understand fully the biopersity(生物多样性) of our earth.Wilson begins with an open letter to the pioneer in environment (环境)protection, Henry David Thoreau. He compares today' s Walden Pond with that of Thoreau' s day. Wilson will use such comparisons for the rest of the book. The problem is clear: man has done great damage to his home over the years. Van the earth, with human help, be made to return to biopersity levels that will be able to support us in the future?Biopersity, Wilson argues, is the key to settling many problems the earth faces today. Even our agricultural crops can gain advantages from it. A mere hundredspecies(物种)are the basis of our food supply, of which but twenty carry the load. Wilson suggests changing this situation by looking into ten thousand species that could be made use of, which will be a way to reduce the clearing of the natural homes of plants and animals to enlarge farming areas. At the end of the book, Wilson discusses the importance of human values in considering the environment. If you are to continue to live on the earth, you may well read and act on the ideas in this book.1.We learn from the text that Wilson cares most about.()A.the environment for plantsB.the biopersity of our earthC.the wastes of natural resourcesD.the importance of human values2.How many species are most important to our present food supply?()A.Twenty.B.Eighty.C.One hundred.D.Ten thousand.3.Wilson suggests that one way to keep biopersity is to()A.learn how to farm scientificallyB.build homes for some dying speciesC.make it clear what to eate more species for food4.We can infer that the text is()A.a description of natural resourcesB.a research reportC.a book reviewD.an introduction to a scientist三、Below is a housing guide for students going to London.University accommodation (住所) officesMany university accommodation offices have their own list of registered landlords (房东). Others also provide information on accommodation agencies and other housing organization. The advantage of using your university accommodation is that you can get support if you have a problem. The disadvantage is that they are unlikely to have enough registered landlords to houses all their students.Property papers: Loot and Rentingloot is an important source (来源) of information about private housing for co-renters. The offers are from private landlords, agencies and inpiduals looking for other co-renters. They also have a website: www. loot. com. The advantage of using Loot is that there are some excellent bargains .The disadvantage is that there is no quality control over the offers.Renting is another useful paper. The offers in this paper are mainly from accommodation agencies. Their website is at www. renting, co. uk.Accommodation agenciesThe majority of rented accommodation in London is probably advertised through accommodation agencies. The advantage of using accommodation agencies is that you will have access to a large number of accommodations. A good agent will listen to your requirements and can save your time in looking for the right accommodation. The disadvantage is that they will make a range of charges to potential renters.Notice boardsAround the universities you will find a number of notice boards where offers of accommodation will be posted. These will either be from landlords or from students. Some universities will also have online notice boards where students can advertise to other students. Advertisements from students can be an excellent way to find accommodation. However, advertisements from landlords can be problem atic.Word of mouthSome of the best housing in London is never advertised but is passed on from one group of students to another by word of mouth. It might be that you can find out about good offers from final year students. However, don't suppose that just because you have found out about housing from a friend it is necessarily going to be better than that found through any other source.FamilyFaced with the very high rents charged in London, some students and their parents will consider buying as an alternative. In some cases this might be a good choice.1.What is the advantage of using Loot?()A.It has more offers from accommodation agencies than Renting.B.It gives you personal information about other co-renters.C.Their website is designed mainly for students.D.There are some good bargains.2.A good agent can help you__________.A.know more peopleB.find cheap accommodationC.get the right accommodation quicklyD.get free information about most accommodations3.The information passed on by word of mouth is important because__________.A.it is better than that found through any other sourceB.it helps you find some of the best housing never advertisedC.the final year students always offer better informationD.the landlords have little valuable information4.For students going to London for the first time, which of the following provides the most reliable information?()A.University accommodation officesB.Loot and RentingC.Notice boardsD.Family四、Stop Spam! When I first got an e-mail account ten years ago, I received communications only from family ,friends, and colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my e-mail, I have an endless series of advertisements and other correspondence that do not interest me at all. If we want e-mails to continue to be useful, we need specific laws that make spamming(发送垃圾) a crime. If law makers do not do something soon to prohibit spam, the problem will certainly get much worse. Computer programs allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of e-mails almost instantly .As more and more advertisers turn to spam to sell their products, inpidual(个人的) e-mail boxes are often flooded with spam e-mails. World people continue to use e-mail if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time? This problem is troubling for inpiduals and companies as well. Many spare e-mails contain computer viruses that can shut down the entire network of a company. Companies rely on e-mails for their employees to communicate with each other. Spam frequently causes failures in their local communications networks, and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively. Such as it nation results in a loss of productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks .These computer problems raise production costs of companies, which are, in the end, passes on to the consumer. For these reasons, I believe that lawmakers need to legislate (立法) against spare. Spammers should be fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people. E-mail is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate conveniently, but spare is destroying this convenience.1.What does the underlined word "correspondence" in the Paragraph 1 probably mean?()A.MessagesB.IdeasC.ConnectionsD.Programs2.According to the text, what is the major cause of the flooding spam?()panies rely on e-mails for communications.B.More people in the world communicate by e-mails.C.Many computer viruses contain spam e-mails.D.More advertisers begin to promote sales through spam.3. According to Paragraph 3, who is the final victim of spare?()A.The businessB.The advertiserC.The employeeD.The consumer4.What is the purpose of the text?()A.To informB.To educateC.To persuadeD.To instruct五、Have you winterized your horse yet? Even though global warming may have made our climate more mild, many animals are still hibernating(冬眠). It's too bad that humans can't hibernate. In fact, as a species, we almost did.Apparently, at times in the past, peasants in France liked a semi-state of human hibernation .So writes Graham Robb, a British scholar who has studied the sleeping habits of the French peas-ants. As soon as the weather turned cold people all over France shut themselves away and practiced the forgotten art of doing nothing at all for months on end.In line with this, Jeff Warren, a producer at CBC Radio's The Current, tells us that the way we sleep has changed fundamentally since the invention of artificial (人造的) lighting and the electricbulb. When historians began studying texts of the Middle Ages, they noticed something referred to as"first sleep", which was not clarified, though. Now scientists are telling us our ancestors most likely slept in separate periods. The business of eight hours' uninterrupted sleep is a modern invention. In the past, without the artificial light of the city to bathe in, humans went to- sleep when it be-came dark and then woke themselves around midnight. The !ate night period was known as "The Watch". It was when people actually kept watch against wild animals, although many of them simply moved around or visited family and neighbours.According to some sleep researchers, a short period of insomnia (失眠) at midnight is not a disorder. It is normal, Humans can experience another state of consciousness around their sleeping ,which occurs in the brief period before we fall asleep or wake ourselves in the morning. This period can be an extraordinarily creative time for some people. The impressive inventor, Thomas Edison ,used thisstate to hit upon many of his new ideas.Playing with your sleep rhythms can be adventurous, as anxiety may set in. Medical science doesn't help much in this ease. It offers us medicines for a lull night's continuous sleep, which sounds natural; however, according to Warren's theory ,it is really the opposite of what we need.1.The example of the French peasants shows the fact that __________.A.people might become lazy as a result of too much sleepB.there were signs of hibernation in human sleeping habitsC.people tended to sleep more peacefully in cold weatherD.winter was a season for people to sleep for months on end2.The late night was called "The Watch" because it was a time for people__________.A.to set traps to catch animalsB.to wake up their family and neighboursC.to remindothers of the timeD.to guard against possible dangers3.What does the author advise people to do?A.Sleep in the way animals do.B.Consult a doctor if they can't sleep.C.Follow their natural sleep rhythm.D.Keep to the eight -hour sleep pattern.4.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?A.To give a prescription for insomnia.B.To urge people to sleep less.C.To analyze the sleep pattern of modern people.D.To throw new light on human sleep.六、Federal regulators Wednesday approved a plan to create a nationwide emergence alert (警报) system using text messages delivered to cell phones. Text messages have exploded in popularity in recent years, particularly among young people .The wireless industry's trade association, CTIA, estimates(估计) more than 48 billion text messages are sent each month. The plan comes from the Warning Alert and Response Network Act, a 2006 federal law that re-quires improvement to the nation's emergency alert system. The act tasked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) with coming up with new ways to alert the public about emergencies. "The ability to deliver accurate and timely warnings and alerts through cell phones and other mobile services is an important next step in our efforts to help ensure that the American public has the information they need to take action to protect themselves and their families before, and during ,disasters and other emergencies," FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said following approval of the plan .Participation in the alert system by carriers telecommunications companies is voluntary, but it has received solid support from the wireless industry. The program would be optional for cell phone users. They also may not be charged for receiving alerts. There would be three different types of messages, according to the rules. The first would be a national alert from the president, likely involving a terrorist attack or natural disaster. The second would involve "approaching threats," which could include natural disasters like hurricanes or storms or even university shootings. The third would be reserved for child abduction (绑架) emergencies, or so-called Amber Alerts. The service could be in place by 2010.1.What is the purpose of the approved plan?A.To warn people of emergencies via messages.B.To popularize the use of cell phones.C.To estimate the monthly number of messages.D.To promote the wireless industry.2.The improvement to the present system is in the charge of__________.A.CTIAB.the Warning Alert and Response NetworkC.FCCD.federal regulators3.The carriers participation in the system is determined by__________.A.the US federal governmentB.mobile phone usersC.the carriers themselvesD.the law of the United States4.Which of the following is TRUE of cell phone users?A.They must accept the alert service.B.They may enjoy the alert service for free.C.They must send the alerts to others.D.They may choose the types of messages.吉林教师考试微信号:jljsksw中公教育官方资料,严谨非法盈利行为!中公教育官方网站:中公教师考试网站站: 吉林省公职考试交流论坛:。

By the time she got to the platform, Lisa felt weak and tired--maybe it hadn' t been a good idea to give blood the night before, she thought. She rested herself against a post close to the tracks.Several yards away, Frank ,43 ,and his girl friend ,Jennifer ,found a spot close to where the front of the train would stop. They were deep in discussion about a house they were thinking of buying ,But when he heard the scream, followed by someone yelling," Oh, my God, she fell in!" Frank didn' t hesitate. He jumped down to the tracks and ran some 40 feet toward the body lying on the rails. "No! Not you!"his girlfriend screamed after him.She was right to be alarmed. By the time Frank reached Lisa, he could feel the tracks shaking and see the light coming. The train was about 20 seconds from the station. It was hard to lift her. She was just out. But he managed to raise her the four feet to the plat-form so that bystanders could hold her by the grins and drag her away from the edge. That was where Lisa briefly regained consciousness, felt herself being pulled along the ground, and saw someone else holding her purse.Lisa thought she'd been robbed. A woman held her hand and a man gave his shirt to help stop the blood pouring from her head. And she tried to talk but she couldn't, and that was when she realized how much pain she was in.Police and fire officials soon arrived, and Frank told the story to an officer. Jennifer said her boyfriend was calm on their do-minute train ride downtown--just as he had been seconds after the rescue ,which made her think about her reaction at the time. "! saw the train coming and I was thinking he was going to die. "she explained. What was the most probable cause for Lisa' s weakness?A.She had run a long way.B.She felt hot in the subway.C.She had done a lot of work.D.She had donated blood the night before.42、 Why did Jennifer try to stop her boyfriend?A.Because they would miss their train.B.Because he didn't see the train coming.C.Because she was sure Lisa was hard to lift.D.Because she was afraid the train would kill him.43、 How did Frank save Lisa?A.By lifting her to the platform.B.By helping her rise to her feet.C.By pulling her along the ground.D.By dragging her away from the edge.44、When did Lisa become conscious again?A.When the train was leaving.B.After she was back on the platform.C.After the police and fire officials came.D.When a man was cleaning the blood from her head.45、The passage is intended toA.warn us of the danger in the subwayB.show us how to save people in the subwayC.tell us about a subway rescueD.report a traffic accident46、完成46-51选项CPeople from East Asia tend to have more difficulties than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions--and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly( 均匀的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes."We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions," Jack said. "Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth. "According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed, As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations. The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral, They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.吉林教师考试微信号:jljsksw中公教育官方资料,严谨非法盈利行为!中公教育官方网站:中公教师考试网站站:吉林省公职考试交流论坛:。

"Mary responded in typical teenage fashion. From that moment on, "the very last thing I ever thought about doing was taking a typing course," she recalls. The show business thing worked out, of course. In her career, Mary won many awards. Only recently, when she began to write Growing Up Again, did she regret ignoring her mom,"I don't know how to use a computer," she admits.Unlike her 1995 autobiography, after all, her second book is less about life as an award - winning actress and more about living with diabetes (糖尿病) ~ All the money from the-book is intended for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an organization she serves as international chairman. "I felt there was a need for a book like this," she says. "I didn't want to lecture, but !wanted other diabetics to know that things get better when we're self-controlled and do our part in managing the disease. "But she hasn't always practiced what she teaches. In her book, she describes that awful day ,almost 40 years ago, when she received two pieces of life-changing news. First, she had lost the baby she was carrying, and second, tests showed that she had diabetes. In a childlike act, she left the hospital and treated herself to a box of doughnuts (甜甜圈). Years would pass before she realized she had to grow up again and take control of her diabetes, not let it control her. Only then did she kick her three -pack -a -day cigarette habit, overcome her addiction to alcohol, and begin to follow a balanced diet.Although her disease has affected her eyesight and forced her to the sidelines of the dance floor ,she refuses to fall into self - pity. "Everybody on earth can ask, why me? about something or other," she insists. "It doesn't do any good. No one is immune (免疫的) to heartache, pain, and disappointments. Sometimes we can make things better by helping others. I've come to realize the importance of that as I've grown up this second time. I want to speak out and be as helpful I can be."Why did Mary feel regretful?A.Because she didn't achieve her ambition.B.Because she didn't take care of her mother.C.Because she didn't complete her high school.D.Because she didn't follow her mother's advice.37、We can know that before 1995 MaryA.had two books publishedB.received many career awardsC.knew how to use a computerD.supported the JDRF by writing38、Mary's second book Growing Up Again is mainly about her.A.living with diabetesB.successful show businessC.service for an organizationD.remembrance of her mother39、When Mary received the life-changing news, sheA.lost control of herselfB.began a balanced dietC.Med to get a treatmentD.behaved in an adult way40、What can we know from the last paragraph?A.Mary feels pity for herself.B.Mary has recovered from her disease.C.Mary wants to help others as much as possible.D.Mary determines to go back to the dance floor.41、根据下列材料,请回答41-46题The largest earthquake ( magnitude 里氏 9.5 ) of the 20th century happened on May 22, 1960 off the coast of South Central. The complete destruction of democracy, the persecution of Jews, the war on religion, the cruelty and barbarism of the Nazis ,and especially the plans of Germany and her allies, Italy and Japan, for world conquest caused great indignation in this country and brought on fear of another world war. While speaking out against Hitler's atrocities, the American people generally favored isolationist policies and neutrality. The Neutrality Acts of 1935 and 1936 prohibited trade with any belligerents or loans to them. In 1937,the President was empowered to declare an arms embargo in wars between nations at his discretion .American opinion began to change somewhat after President Roosevelt's "quarantine the aggressor" speech at Chicago (1937) in which he severely criticized Hitler's policies. go,because college will help them earn more money, become“better people”,and learn to be more responsible citizens than those who don't go.But college has never been able to work its magic for everyone. And now that close to half our high school graduates are attending, those who don't fit the pattern are becoming more and more, and more obvious.College graduates are selling shoes and driving taxis;College students get in the way of each other's experiments andwrite false letters of recommendation(推荐)in the competition for admission to graduate school.Others find no interest in their studies, and drop out—often encouraged by college administrators(教导主任).Some observers say the fault is with the young people themselves—they are spoiled and they are expecting too much. But that is a condemnation(谴责)of the students as a whole, and does not explain all campus unhappiness.Others blame the state of the world, and they are partly right. We've been told that young people have to go to college because our economy cannot take in an army of untrained eighteen year old.But disappointed graduates are learning that it can no longer take in an army of trained twenty year old, either. Some adventuresome educators and campus watchers have openly begun to suggest that college may not be the best, the proper, the only place for every young person after the completion of high school. We may have been looking at all those surveys(调查)upside down,it seems, and thinking of the rosy glow of our own remembered college experiences.Perhaps college does not make people intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal,or quick to learn things—maybe it is just the other way round, and intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal,or quick people are only the ones who have been attracted to college in the first place. And perhaps all those successful college graduates would have been successful whether they had gone to college or not. This is heresy(异端邪说)to those of us who have been brought up to believe that if a little schooling is good, more has to be much better. But opposite evidence is beginning to mount up.( )1.According to the passage all the following statements are true to drop outD.more and more young people are found unfit for college( )2.Which of the following is one of some observers opinions?A.The students expect so much that they are not satisfied with the hard college life.B.The economic situation is so discouraging that the youth have to attend college.C.Colleges should improve because of so much campus unhappiness.D.Colleges provide more chances of good jobs than anywhere else.( )3.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 mean?A.Our college experiences prove that those surveys are incorrect.B.The surveys may remind us of our beautiful college experiences.C.The surveys should all be reexamined according to our college experiences.D.Our college experiences may make us misunderstand the results of the surveys. ( )4.What is the main purpose of this passage?A.To value young people's further education in college.B.To put forward an idea that college should not be the first choice.C.To argue against the idea that college is the best place for all young people.D.To persuade young people into working after the completion of high school.中公教育官方资料,严谨非法盈利行为!中公教育官方网站:中公教师考试网站站:吉林省公职考试交流论坛:。

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Yesterday our teacher of English asked me to say something about pollution. Now I give you my views on this vital question.
As a matter of fact, the influences of industrial pollution are well known to everyone: polluted water, polluted earth, and so on. Though a great deal has already been done to deal with these problems, they are still serious. Continued population increase, smog and chemical waste produced by factories and cars, not only threatens to exhaust our resources, but also pollutes our environment.
We do need fresh air, clean water and our children s health.
In my opinion, to solve the problem of pollution, everyone should refrain from polluting our environment. We should know that protecting environment is the duty of every person, not of the government alone.
