新教与天主教的区别在于对教会作用的认识上。
按照天主教的说法，由于教皇掌管着到天堂的钥匙，所以基督徒要想死后到天堂，就必须经过教会，圣经也只有神职人员在教堂布道才是代表神的旨意。
而新教则否认这些原则，认为圣经人人有权看，到达天堂是神的意思并不由教会批准与否。
信徒者提出要求，清除国教中天主教的残存因素，他们的主张被称为“清教”，他们则被称为清教徒。
