AI have been teaching animal behavior at the Boulder County Prison in Colorado for 10 years. The course is one of the most popular in the prison. Prisoners have to earn the right to attend the course and they work hard to get in.One reason why the course is so popular is that many prisoners find it easier to connect with animals than with people, because animals don’t judge them. They trust animals in ways they don’t with humans.Yet, they hold a misunderstanding of how animals treat one another. Many admit that their own “animal behavior” is what got them into trouble in the first place. I teach that though there is competition and aggression in the animal kingdom, there is also a lot of cooperation (合作) and sympathy. Many of the students want to build healthy relationships, and they find that the class helps them. I use examples of the social behavior of group-living animals such as wolves as a model for developing and maintaining (维持) friendships among people who must work together for their own good and also for the good of the group. It’s clear that science inspires the students here and it also gives them hope. I know some students have gone back into education after their being set free while others have gone to work for humane (人道) societies or contributed time and money to conservation organizations. One went on to receive a master’s degree in nature writing.Science and humane education help the prisoners connect with values that they otherwise would not have done. It opens the door to understanding, trust, cooperation and hope. There’s a large population of people to whom science could mean a lot, if only they could have access to it. The class helps me, too. I get as much out of it as the students and it has made me a better teacher.21. The author’s course is welcomed by the prisoners because ________.A. they consider animals their best friendsB. they are curious about animal kingdomC. they feel it easier to get along with animalsD. they are more familiar with animal behavior22. The author used wolves as an example to ________.A. provide the prisoners with more knowledgeB. explain the cruel side of group-living animalsC. help the prisoners realize the importance of teamworkD. inform the prisoners that animals get people into trouble23. We can infer from the text that some prisoners ________.A. have turned over a new leafB. are required to attend the courseC. are willing to learn working skillsD. prefer humane education to scienceBRaised in a fatherless home, my father was extremely tightfisted towards us children. His attitude didn’t soften as I grew into adulthood and went to college. I had to ride t he bus whenever I came home. Though the bus stopped about two miles from home, Dad never met me, even in severe weather. If I grumbled, he’d say in his loudest father-voice, “That’s what your legs are for!”The walk didn’t bother me as much as the fear of walking alone along the highway and country roads. I also felt less than valued that my father didn’t seem concerned about my safety. But that feeling was canceled one spring evening. It had been a particularly difficult week at college after long hours in labs. I longed for home. When the bus reached the stop, I stepped off and dragged my suitcase to begin the long journey home.A row of hedge (树篱) edged the driveway that climbed the hill to our house. Once I had turned off the highway to start the last lap of my journey, I always had a sense of relief to see the hedge because it meant that I was almost home. On that particular evening, the hedge had just come into view when I saw something gray moving along the top of the hedge, moving toward the house. Up on closer observation, I realized it was the top of my father’s head. Then I knew, each time I’d come home, he had stood behind the hedge, watching, until he knew I had arrived safely. I swallowed hard against the tears. He did care, after all.On later visits, that spot of gray became my watchtower. I could hardly wait until I was close enough to watch for its secret movement above the greenery. Upon reaching home, I would find my father sitting innocently in his chair. “So! My son, it’s you!” he’d say, hi s face lengthening into pretended surprise.I replied, “Yes, Dad, it’s me. I’m home.”24. What does the underlined word “grumbled” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A. Accepted happily.B. Explained clearly.C. Agreed willingly.D. Spoke unhappily.25. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. My Father’s Secret.B. My College Life.C. Terrible Journey Home.D. AMuch meaning can be conveyed, clearly, with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak. Do you have such kind of experience? In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not too long. And if he is sensing that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable. The same in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down, to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry toward others’ stare at you that way. Eyes do speak, right?Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are different when it comes to stare at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to move his gaze, his intentions are obvious, that is, he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that he is admiring her. However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking, to tell him that he is attentive. If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to dominate (控制) you, you will feel uncomfortable. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim, since he believes in the false idea that to look straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication. Quite the contrary. In fact, continuous eye contact is confined (有限的) to lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time, to show affection that words cannot express.Evidently, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the specific situation.21. Which of the following behaviors is proper according to the passage?A. To the opposite sex, stare at him or her.B. To a stranger, avoid looking at him or her.C. In a conversation, look at the listener all the time.D. Make eye contact depending on the relationship and different situations.22. If two persons exchange eye contact gently for long, what is probably their relationship?A. Boss and employee.B. Lovers.C. Teacher and student.D. Strangers23. What’s the best title of the passage?A. Don’t stare at othersB. Body language is importantC. Eyes can speakD. Eye contact benefits youBSome people think if you are happy, you are blind to reality. But when we research it, happiness actually raises every single business and educational outcome for the brain. How did we miss this? Why do we have these social misunderstandings about happiness? Because we assumed you were average. When we study people, scientists are often interested in what the average is.Many people think happiness is genetic. That’s only half the story, because the average person does not fight their genes. When we stop studying the average and begin researching positive outliers—people who are above average for a positive aspect like optimism or intelligence—a wildly different picture appears. Our daily decisions and habits have a huge impact upon both our levels of happiness and success.Scientifically, happiness is a choice. It is a choice about where your single processor brain will devote its limited resources as you process the world. If you scan for the negative first, your brain really has no resources left over to see the things you are grateful for or the meaning embedded (嵌入) in your work. But if you scan the world for the positive, you start to acquire an amazing advantage.I wrote the cover story for the Harvard Business Review magazine on “Happiness Leads toProfits.” Based on my article called “Positive Intelligence” and my res earch in The Happiness Advantage, I summarized our researched conclusion: the single greatest advantage in the modern economy is a happy and busy workforce.A decade of research in the business world proves that happiness raises nearly every business and educational outcome: increasing sales by 37%, productivity by 31%, and accuracy on tasks by 19%, as well as a number of health and quality-of-life improvements.25. The underlined word “this” in the first paragraph refers to ________.A. the fact that people are happyB. the connection between happiness and educational outcomeC. the fact that people often misunderstand happinessD. the fact that most people are average26. What can we learn from the passage?A. Scientists are only interested in what the average is.B. You can choose to be happy or not.C. The average are not happy at all.D. Our decisions and habits have nothing to do with happiness.27. Why does the writer mention his articles and research?A. To advertise himself.B. To arouse the readers’ interest.C. To support his point about happiness.D. To attract the readers to read his articles.28. What is the author’s purpose of writing this article?A. To explain what is happiness.B. To describe the misunderstandings about happiness.C. To show people the importance of happiness.D. To make the point that happiness promotes business and educational outcome.CScientists investigated why Ebola virus is so deadly when it spreads from animals to humans and then from human-to-human contact. The research team looked at the Zaire Ebola virus in an animal system to understand how it gains strength. This virus is responsible for the current outbreak in West Africa. They found that initially (最初) the animal systems were not affected by the virus, but succeeding transmission (传送) into other animals caused the virus to “hot up” and become more severe. The team analyzed the viruses at different stages and were able to identify several changes in its genetic material that were associated with increased disease.Professor Julian Hiscox, who led the study from the University’s Institute of Infection and Global Health, explains: “The work tells us that the evolutionary goal of Ebola virus is to become more fatal.”“We were able to show through genetic analysis whi ch parts of the virus are involved in this process. The information we have gathered will now allow us to monitor for such changes in an outbreak as well as develop future treatment strategies.”Professor Roger Hewson, leading the study from Public Health England, Porton Down, said: “Ebola virus is such a destructive infection to the people affected by the disease and the economy of West Africa.”“Our understanding of Ebola virus biology is way behind that of other viruses and our cooperation shows how we c an bring together our specialists’ skills to close this knowledge gap.”Professor Miles Carroll, a co-author of the work, said: “This study has allowed the team to be at the forefront of developing methodologies to analyze patient samples recently taken by the European Mobile Laboratory from West Africa to understand disease evolution during the current outbreak.”29. What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?A. How severe Ebola virus is.B. How Ebola virus spreads.C. How Ebola virus gradually becomes deadly.D. What contributions scientists have made on Ebola virus.30. Which of the following statements is mentioned in the passage?A. In the first stage, the virus hurts its victims much.B. As the virus spreads, it’ll change and become more and more de adly.C. The research in Ebola virus is more advanced than that in other viruses.D. The scientists have a negative attitude to the research in Ebola virus.31. The underlined word “fatal” has the closest meaning to ________.A. optimisticB. deadlyC. commonD. fantastic32. Where can we probably read this passage?A. In a science report.B. In a storybook.C. In an advertisement.D. In a textbook.DI was sure that I was to be killed. I became terribly nervous. I fumbled (摸索) in my pockets to see if there were any cigarettes, which had escaped their search. I found one and because of my shaking hands, I could barely get it to my lips. But I had no matches, they had taken those. I looked through the bars at the guard. He did not make eye contact with me. I called out to him “Have you got a light?” He looked at me, shrugged and came over to light my cigarette. As he came close and lit the match, his eyes unconsciously locked with mine. At that moment, I smiled. I don’t know why I did that. Perhaps it was nervousness, perhaps it was because, when you get very close, one to another, it is very hard not to smile. In any case, I smiled. In that instant, it was as though a spark jumped across the gap between our two hearts, our two huma n souls. I know he didn’t want to, but my smile leaped through the bars and caused a smile on his lips, too. He lit my cigarette but stayed near, looking at me directly in the eyes and continuing to smile.I kept smiling at him, now thinking of him as a pe rson and not just a guard. “Do you have kids?” he asked. “Yes, here, here.” I took out my wallet and nervously fumbled for the pictures of my family. He, too, took out the pictures of his family and began to talk about his plans and hopes for them. My eyes filled with tears. I said that I feared that I’d never see my family again, never have the chance to see them grow up. Tears came to his eyes, too. Suddenly, without another word, he unlocked my cell and silently led me out. Out of the prison, quietly and by back routes, out of the town. There, at the edge of town, he released me. And without another word, he turned back toward the town.32. What had happened to the man before?A. He had been badly treated.B. He had killed someone.C. He had been searched.D. He had been forbidden to get in touch with anyone.33. Why did the man want to smoke cigarettes?A. Because he was sure he was to be killed.B. Because he wanted to ease his nervousness.C. AA sure way to destroy your chances of learning how to write skillfully is to believe that writing i s a “natural gift” rather than a learned skill. People with such an attitude think that they are the only ones for whom writing is unbearably difficult. They feel that everyone else finds writing easy or at least tolerable. Such people often say, “I’m not any good at writing” or “English was not one of my good subjects.” They imply that they simply do not have a talent for writing while others do. The result of this attitude is that these people try to avoid writing, and when they do write, they don’t try their best. Their writing fails chiefly because they believe that they don’t have the “natural talent” needed to write. Unless their attitude changes, they probably will not learn how to write effectively.A realistic attitude about writing must build on the idea that writing is a skill. It is a skill like driving, typing, or cooking; and, like any skill, it can be learned. If you have the determination to learn, you will develop your writing skills by practicing extensively. Many people find it difficult to do the active thinking that clear writing demands. It is frustrating to discover how much of a challenge it is to transfer thoughts and feelings from one’s head onto a sheet of paper. But writing is not an automatic process: We will not get something for nothing—and we should not expect to. For almost everyone, skillful writing comes from hard work—from determination and sweat. The good news is that the skill of writing can be mastered, and if you are ready to work, you will learn what you need to know.21. Why do some people think writing is difficult?A. They have no time to practice writing.B. They believe few people can write well.C. They have no good teachers to help them.D. They don’t think writing can be learned.22. It can be inferred from Para. 1 that ________.A. “natural gift” is the determining factor in one’s successB. diligence can result in successC. a person without “natural gift” is sure to fail in writingD. attitude determines what one will be23. What is the topic of the passage?A. Why writing is important.B. Whether writing is a born gift.C. Benefits of essay writing.D. How to improve writing skills.BBesides containing attractive flowers, trees and other plants that beautify the community, eco-friendly rain gardens are healthy for the environment and the people living and working nearby.A rain garden is not very different from a traditional garden. It is just a far more ecofriendly garden. Usually it is built lower than the ground. Rain gardens make smart use of rain and storm water by temporarily holding water from rain and storms and letting it soak (浸入) slowly into the ground before it runs into streams or enters the public drinking water supply. Thus, a rain garden keeps the water, allowing it to be used as needed by plants in the rain garden, rather than flowing immediately into nearby streams and going unused. The water will soak slowly into the ground within a day or two. This creates an advantage that the rain garden does not allow mosquitoes to breed. This is a simple, attractive, and eco friendly “green” way to treat storm water. What’s more, planting a rain garden helps reduce pollution and improve the environment. Without using expensive machinery and chemicals, rain gardens remove harmful chemicals in the rainwater and cut down on the amount of pollution reaching streams and rivers by up to 30%.Native plants are recommended for rain gardens because they are more used to the local climate, soil, and water conditions. They may attract local wildlife such as native birds. Wateryour rain garden immediately after planting and once a week, unless you have had at least an inch of rain during the week. Once native plants establish the necessary root system, they will require little care.Often, local governments and private businesses develop large rain gardens in their yards and in public parks as a way to improve the environment and solve flooding problems. As parents, they wanted to do something to help their daughter survive despite having a tube following her all the time. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends. My earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard. On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor cafe. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before? The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.56. Why did the author feel bitter about her father as a young adult?A. He was silent most of the time.B. He was too proud of himself.C. He did not love his children.D. He expected too much of her.57. When the author went out with her father on weekends, she would feel _______.A. nervousB. sorryC. tiredD. safe58. What does the author think of her father after her visit to Tucson?A. More criticalB. More talkativeC. Gentle and friendlyD. Strict and hard-working59. The underlined words “my new friend” in the last paragraph refer to _______?A. the author’s sonB. the author’s fatherC. the friend of the author’s fatherD. the cafe ownerBSome people think that as more and more people have televisions in their homes, fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers. Why read an article in the newspaper, when the TV news can bring you the information in a few minutes and with pictures? Why read the life story of a famous man, when a short television program can tell you all that you want to know?Television has not killed reading, however. Today, newspapers sell in very large numbers. And books of every kind are sold more than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and enjoyment. Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are printed today as paperbacks (平装本), which are quite cheap. A paperback collection of short stories, for example, is always cheaper than an evening at the cinema or the theater, and you can keep a book for ever and read it many times.Books are a wonderful provider of knowledge and pleasure and some types of books should be in every home. Every home should have a good dictionary. A good encyclopedia (百科全书), though expensive, is useful, too, because you can find information on any subject. Besides, you can have such books as history books, science textbooks, cookbooks, and collections of stories and peoms. Then from time to time you can take a book of peoms off your shelves and read the thoughts and feelings of your favorite poets.60. It can be inferred from the passage that _________.A. TV programs are a chief provider of knowledge.B. cinemas are the best choice in getting information.C. reading is a cheap way of learning and having fun.D. newspapers are an expensive way to enjoy oneself.61. What does the sentence “Television has not killed reading, however” underlined in the secondparagraph suggest?A. People only need reading, though.B. Reading is still necessary today.C. Reading is more fun than televisionD. Watching television doesn’t help reading.62. Which of the following is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?A. Types of booksB. Kinds of dictionaries.C. Lists of history booksD. Collections of stories and poems63. What can we learn from the passage?A. Fewer and fewer people will by books.B. A good dictionary should be kept in every home.C. Books with hard covers sell better than paperbacks.D. More people like TV programs about famous men.CThe meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services.” There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children and picking up garbage (垃圾) from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s home in Calcutta. The following is her story.“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school. We watch a video (录像) about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch.I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”64. According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who _________.A. is willing to help those in need without pay.B. can afford to travel to different places.C. has a strong wish to be successful.D. has made a big fortune in life.65. Tracy started her work as a volunteer __________.A. after she met Mother Teresa.B. after she finished high school.C. when she was touring Calcutta.D. when she was working in a hospital.66. Why did Tracy choose to be a volunteer?A. She liked to work with Mother Teresa.B. She had already had some experience.C. She was asked by Mother Teresa to do so.D. She wanted to follow Mother Teresa’s example.67. What is Tracy’s “new idea” (Paragraph 2) of being a volunteer?A. Going abroad to help the sick.B. Working in Mother Teresa’s home.C. Doing simple things to help the poor.D. Improving oneself through helping others.DAre you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time ---about eight hours after you wake up---your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later. In many parts of the world, people take naps (小睡) in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates (气候), where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap ---even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.68. Why do people feel sleepy in the early afternoon according to the text?A. They eat too much for lunch.B. They sleep too little at night.C. Their body temperature becomes lower.D. The weather becomes a lot warmer.69. If you get up at 6:30 am, what is the best time for you to take a nap?A. About 12:30 pm.B. About 1:30 pm.C. About 2:30 pmD. About 3:30 pm70. What would be the best title for the text?A. Just for a RestB. All for a NapC. A Special Sleep PatternD. Taking Naps in Warmer Climate.四、书面表达据报道,越来越多的农民去城市打工,孩子被留在农村,成为“留守儿童”。

AAbout 30 years ago, I left Cuba for the United States with my son. After getting settled finally in Brunswick, New Jersey, I enrolled (注册) my son in kindergarten. Several weeks later, my son’s teacher asked me to meet him at his office. In the teacher’s office, and exchange of greetings was followed by his questions: “Is your son mentally retarded (弱智的)? Does he suffer from any kind of mental disability?”Was he talking about my wonderful Scola? NO, no, it can’t be. What a helpless, lonely moment! I told him that Scola was a quiet, sweet little boy, instead. I asked him why he was asking me all these questions. My son could not follow the teacher’s directions, he told me, and thus, Scola was disrupting the class. Didn’t he know my son did not speak English yet?He was angry; “Why hasn’t your son been taught to speak English? Don’t you speak English at home?”No, I didn’t speak English at home, I replied. I was sure my son would learn English in a couple of months, and I didn't want him to forget his native language. Well, wrong answer! What kind of person would not speak in English to her son at home and at all time? “Are you one of those people who come to this country to save dollars and send them back to their country, never wanting to be a part of this society?”Needless to say, I tried to tell him I was not one of “those people.” Then he told me the meeting was over, and I left.As I had expected, my son learned to speak English fluently before the school year was over. He went on to graduate from college and got a job, earning close to six figures. He travels widely and leads a well-adjusted, contented life. And he has benefited from being bilingual (双语的)。

More than 30 kinds of seeds, including that of rice, oats etc., were placed inside the multi-module Chang'e 5 spacecraft and orbited around the moon for about 15 days.Scientists wished to check what would happen to the seeds after being exposed to extraterrestrial(地外的)forces in lunar orbit and also hoped that they could develop beneficial mutations(突变). This mission offered good opportunities to scientists, which enabled them to deepen their studies on the effect of cosmic rays on the growth and evolution of life on Earth.Space-based mutation breeding refers to the process of exposing seeds to fores such as microgravity, vacuums and cosmic radiation during a spaceflight and then sending them back to Earth for further observation and planting. Researchers observe and examine several generations of plants grown from space-bred seeds and investigate their mutations—some are positive and desirable while others are negative. Those with positive mutations will be kept and analyzed, and will be introduced to farmers after their certification and approval.Space breeding can generate mutations faster and more conveniently than ground-based experimentsand can bring about some desirable traits that are otherwise hard to introduce. Compared with natural or conventionally bred types of plants, space-developed versions with positive mutations usually feature higher nutritional content, greater annual yields, shorter growth periods and better resistance to diseases and insect pests.China conducted its first space breeding experiment in 1987, using a satellite to carry seeds into space. Since then, hundreds of kinds of seeds and seedlings have traveled with dozens of Chinese spaceships. Space breeding has helped to produce more than 200 new types of mutated plants in China that have been approved for large-scale cultivation, ranging from grains to vegetables and fruits. AThere was once a lonely girl who longed so much for love. One day while she was walking in the woods she found two starving songbirds. She took them home and put them in a small cage, caring them with love. Luckily, the birds grew strong little by little. Every morning they greeted her with a wonderful song. The girl felt great love for the birds. One day the girl left the door to the cage open accidentally. The larger and stronger of the two birds flew from the cage. The girl was so frightened that he would fly away. So as he flew close, she grasped him wildly. Her heart felt glad at her success in capturing him. Suddenly, she felt the bird go weak, so she opened her hand and stared in horror at the dead bird. It was her desperate love that had killed him.She noticed the other bird moving back and forth on the edge of the cage. She could feel his strong desire—needing to fly into the clear, blue sky. Unwillingly, she lifted him from the cage and threw him softly into the air. The lucky bird circled once, twice, three times. The girl watched delightedly at the bird. Her heart was no longer concerned with her loss. What she wanted to see was that the bird could fly happily. Suddenly the bird flew closer and landed softly on her shoulder. It sang the sweetest tune that she had ever heard.Remember, the fastest way to lose love is to hold on it too tight; the best way to keep love is to give it wings!21. Its citizens are fundamentally prosperous and the way of life in the major cities and towns is much the same however many miles divide them. It takes a sharp ear to identify regional accents. However, there is some difference in lifestyle between city settlers and the country people. Almost 90 percent of the population lives in the fast-paced cities along the coast and has little more than a passing familiarity with the desert. The major cities preserve images of colonial heritage, but the overall impression is modem, with new buildings reflecting the country’s youth. In contrast, the rural communities tend to be slow-moving and conservative. For many years, Australia was said to have “ridden on the sheep’s back” , a reference to wool being the country’ s main money earner. However, it is no longer dominant (主宰的). Much of Australia’s relatively sound economy is now achieved from natural coal and wheat, and by being the largest diamond producer in the world. Newer industries such as tourism and wine making are also increasingly important. Australians are generally friendly and relaxed, with a modest sense of humor.Yet, contrary to widespread belief, very few Australians have true prisoner origins. Within only one generation of the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, Australia had become a nationof immigrants. Originally coming almost entirely from the British Isles, today one in three Australians comes from elsewhere. Australia’s liberal postwar immigration policies led to a flowing of survivors from war-torn Europe, most notably Greeks, Italians, Poles and Germans. The emphasis has shifted in recent years and today the majority of new immigrants are from Southeast Asia. Today Australia is a “mixture of nations” and although some racism exists, it has generally been a successful experiment and the country is reasonably proud to have one of the most harmonious multicultural communities in the world.24. Yet research seems to show that some training can improve such skills. A recently published study also appears to attest that the good effects of training can last for many years after that training has ended.Researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland wanted to learn how long memory and thinking skills would last in older people who were trained to keep them. The people were part of the ten-year research project. They were taught methods meant to improve their memory, thinking and ability to perform everyday tasks.More than 2,800 volunteered for the study called ACTIVE—short for Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly. Most were studied when they were more than 70 years old.The volunteers took one of several short training classes meant to help them keep their mental abilities. One class trained participants in skills including how to remember word lists. Another group trained in reasoning. A third group received help with speed-of-processing—speed of receiving and understanding information. A fourth group—the control group did not get any training.Earlier results had established that the training helped the participants for up to five years. Now, leading study writer George Rebok says, the research showed most of the training remained effective a full ten years later.Professor Rebok and his team found that the people trained in reasoning and speed-of- processing did better on tests than the control group.“We are wondering whether those effects which endured over time would still be there ten years following the training, and in fact, that’s exactly what we found.”The effect on memory, however, seemed not to last as long. Still, the old people in any of the three classes generally reported less difficulty in performing daily activities than the control group. The total training time for the older people was between 10 and 15 hours.32. Which statement is false according to the text?A. This kind of training can only have effects on people for a few years.B. The people were trained during a period of ten years.C. Most of the people who were studied were more than 70 years old.D. The first group were trained how to remember word lists.33. Perform daily activities better.34. What does the underlined word “attest” in the first paragraph mean?A. Affect.B. Deny.C. Prove.D. Improve.35.
