The youngest ,who was not in the least ambitious ,took no part in their argument .As soon as they left home ,the father arranged for an adequate income to be provided for each of them ,but insisted that apart from this they were to be financially self-supporting . The elder twin ,who had the advantage of good looks and a striking personality, decided that he would take up the stage as a career. He joined a small repertory company ,acted in minorparts ,was always unpunctual at rehearsals and was accordingly unpopular with his fellow-actors .He earned little and so had to live mainly on his allowance. He occasionally thought of changing his profession ,but always put off making a decision ,and he became increasingly bored and disillusioned二.Many students find the experience of attending university lectures to be a confusing and frustrating experience. The lecturer speaks for one or two hours ,perhaps illustrating the talk with slides, writing up important information on the blackboard ,distributing reading material and giving ort assignment .The new student sees the other students continuously writing on notebooks and wonders what to write .Very often the student leaves the lecture with notes which do not catch the main points and which become hard even for the students to understand .Most institutions provide courses which assist new students to develop the skills they need to be effective listeners and note-takers .If these are unavailable ,there are many useful study-skills guides which enable learners to practice these skills independently .In all cases it is important to tackle the problem before actually starting your studies .It is important to acknowledge that most students have difficulty in acquiring the language skills required in college study . One way of overcoming these difficulties is to attend the language and study-skills classes which most institutions provide throughout the academic year .Another basic strategy is to find a study partner with whom it is possible to identify difficulties ,exchange ideas and provide support.I tackle in overcoming with whom三、One day when Jamie came home after school ,his mother had on her worry face .He knew she was thinking of the weather“It‟s bad out there ,Black clouds are coming form the sea ,”Jamie said .”yes I‟m thinking of those fishing boats at sea .”she saidAt that moment the lights went out .Jamie and his mother were in the dark“The coastline will be in the dark .”Jamie‟s mother said .She got more worried . Troubles always come in threes .I broke my best glasses this morning ,and my sister has the cold .“Now ,don‟t worry ,mum .They …re right ,”They‟re sure go come through this all right .But Jamie really worried about those fishing boats himself .The fishing boats would miss the cove in the darkJamie took flares and rushed into the wind .There was a cliff by the sea. He started to climb .He pulled himself up hand over hand .At last he reached the top .He failed three times . On the fourth try he fired off one of the flares .It rose and cut into the black sky in bright light .Then he saw an answering flare up at sea .Jamie fired off two more .He saw another answering flare up ,then another ,then another .The answering flares from the fishing boats showed they had passed by the entrance to the cove but then changed course and were now sailing into the cove .They were almost home .Jamie helped save the fishermen of the village .四、More and more teachers and parents have noticed another kind of pollution, which came from the printed papers sold on streets .These printed things look like newspaper but have hardly any thing to so with them ,you can only find reading materials badly made up there-some are too strange for anyone to believe ,others are frightening stories of something even worse .However ,many of the young students are getting absorbed in such poisonous reading ,which costs them what they should pay for their breakfast and bring them nightmares and immoral ideas in return, Homework is left undone ,daily games lost .These sellers shout on streets selling their papers well .The writers ,publishers and printers ,whoever they are ,we never know ,are making their silent money .The sheep skinned wolf‟s stories seem to have been forgotten once again .Why not forbid this kind of things at school ?Yes ,both teachers and parents have asked each other for more strict control of the young readers .Yet unfortunately ,the more you want to forbid it ,the more they want to have a look at it ,Sometimes you may even find several children share one patched paper ,which has traveled from one hand to another driven by the curious nature .It really does harm to our society .It has already formed a sort of moral pollution .The worried teachers and parents need more powerful support .Meanwhile ,the young readers need more interesting books go help them get rid of these ugly papers .五、It is always interesting to visit another country ,especially for those who have never traveled a great deal .Foreign travel can be very educational for anyone if he is interested enough to make preparations beforehand .Learning the language of the new country would be difficult for the traveler ,but the benefits of such an effort would become obvious immediately on his arrival. It may not seem important to him when he comfortably stays at home ,but knowing how to order a meal or book a room is necessary for the newcomer in a strange country . Without knowing the language ,it is very difficult for the stranger to understand the people of the new country and their customs .Of course ,in our small world it is often possible to find someone who understands ourown ,but this is only second-best for the traveler. To be sure ,he can see places and things without the use of a language ,but places and things are not the heart of any country .To get the greatest benefit from a trip to another country ,it is how important for the visitor to have an understanding of the language .六Did you sleep well last night ? (已提交)参考答案:C问题解析:Every one of us is a mother, father, son or daughter - and we all have dreams - big and small. Unfortunately, too many of us keep these dreams to ourselves because we fear what others might say. My point in writing this is to say it's OK to dream and dream big and talk about your dreams so that others are inspired to dream big too. What a world we would have if everyone did this! My dad was a dreamer. He told methat one day he was going to have a sailboat. We would go to theboat shows whenever they came to town and climb into them. My father would talk to the sales people and I would be busy pretending to sail the boat. It was fun. Then one day we went to the boat place and took out a sailboat on the ocean, what a thrill! Soon afterwards he bought his first boat and named it "LETSGO" and we sailed and sailed big bays and seas around New England. When I was older I got to be the skipper because he not only told me his dream he showed it to me and let me taste the idea on my own. Now I was inspired to dream big too. You see dreams can do wonders for you. When you believe in your dreams, they take on a life of their own. Now you start dreaming up things to do to make your inspiration a reality. More dreams, moreinspiration, then more dreams and a few more. Then one morning youwake up and the dream has come true. My dreams have taken me toso many beautiful places; I've been below the surface of the oceanwatching the beauty of coral and fish as I swim by. I've flown anairplane with pontoon floats from a lake in northern Maine and anotherdifferent plane on a flight over the Grand Canyon. I've also riddenunder my own wind blown sails. The pictures in my head are pricelessand better than any I've taken. Some of the best times I've had werelistening to older people talk about their dreams and what their dreamsdid for their lives. When I hear some of their dreams it inspires me to thinkand dream how I might do that too. I interviewed a man some yearsago who was 80-something years young. He was a sturdy man with thehands to match the story he told me. Hands still strong enough to crackthe shells of the walnuts he offered me and munched on. He hadoutlived his wife but still lived in their neat home with bookcases nearthe fireplace he no doubt built. I asked one question and I didn’t move for hours. His story of leaving home to explore the world and learna new trade was fascinating to my young mind. But it was after hearinghis tale that I realized what he was really saying to me - not as anaspiring journalist but as a person. He told me he dreamed that hewould have a great life and he had one, so, I could dream abouthaving a great life and get one too. Just as my father had said to meearlier, here was another confirmation. I did just what they said to do, because I could do anything I wanted. Therefore, I say dream... dreambig dreams about your great life to come. I?heading out toward my next one, how about you?11.(单选题) According to the author, people keep dreams tothemselves because ________.A. they don’t think their dreams will come trueB. they don’t have time to realize their dreamsC. their parents don’t support themD. they fear what others might say答题: A. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't oldenough and we'll be more content when they are. After that we'refrustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We always tell ourselvesthat our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her acttogether. when we get a nice car, and are able to go on a nicevocation when we retire. The truth is, there's no better time than rightnow. If not now, when? Yur life will always be filled with challenges. It'sbest to admit this to ourselves and decide to be happy anyway. One ofmy favorite quotes comes from Alfred Souza. He said. "for a long time ithad seemed to me that life was about to begin-real life. But there wasalways some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Thenlife would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were mylife." This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way tohappiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment that youhave and treasure it more because you share it with someone special, special enough to spend your time with… ans remember that time waits for no man. So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back toschool; until you lose ten pounds ,until you have husband and kids; untilyour kids leave the house; until you get a new car, until you retire.Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So, work like you don't needmoney, love like you've never been hurt before; Dance like no one'swatching.11.(单选题) According to the passage, ________ make us feel frustrated.A. getting marriedB. having a babyC. taking care of kidsD. having one thing after another答题: A. 中国的纺织和四大发明也通过此路传向西方。

The Silk Road is not only a network of trade route connecting the East and West but also a channel of political interaction and cultural exchange between China and other Asian and European countries. The Western music, painting, architecture, and religion were introduced into China via the Silk Road and had great impact on China. The Chinese textiles and the Four Great Inventions were also introduced to the West via the Silk Road. As a symbol of friendship for interaction between the East and West, the Silk Road fostered an embryonic form of world trade and made monumental contributions to the development of the world.2、现在人们习惯于使用智能手机、平板电脑(tablet PC)或者专门的电子阅读器来阅读。

Reading Comprehension (40 points)Directions:There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by 5 questions. For each question there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. Please choose the best answer to the question.Passage OneVitamins are a group if substances found in food. The body needs them for life and health. So naturally, many people are concerned with the question: Am I getting enough vitamins. And am I getting the right kind?Even though very small amounts of each vitamin are enough for the needs of the body, that many people have not enough vitamins has some basis, and this has something to do with their diet— the food they take in. A person eating a good variety of foods gets all the vitamins now known to be needed, with the possible exception of D.The problem is that there are many people who don’t choose foods wisely, don’t get enough variety, and don’t eat the basic fo ods they need to get their vitamins. So the answer to this question is: No extra vitamins are needed, if you eat proper food. In fact, many of the vitamins can not be stored in the body, so when extra vitamins are taken in, the body simply gets rid of them, It is even harmful to put too much of certain vitamins into the body. This has been found to be true of vitamin A and D, when large amounts are taken in.What foods supply what vitamins? Here is a general idea. Vitamin A, for the health of the eyes, skin, teeth, and bones, is found in green vegetables, fruits, eggs, liver and butter. Vitamin B1, which helps the nervous and digestive systems and prevents certain diseases, is found in cereals, pork and liver. VitaminB2 is found in milk, eggs, green vegetables and meats. Vitamin C, which helps boned and teeth, is found in tomatoes, certain fruits and vegetables. These are only a few of the most important vitamins the body needs.21. Our body needs _________ for life and health.A. small amounts of each vitaminB. extra vitaminsC. all vitamins except vitamin DD. large amounts of certain vitamins22. Vitamin A is needed by _________ and can be found in _________.A. bones, porkB. nervous system, milkC. eyes, green vegetablesD. teeth, meats23. Vitamin B1 is very important to_________.A. the digestive systemB. bonesC. liverD. skin24. What will be the result if you take more vitamins than you really need?A. They will do great harm to our body.B. We get all the vitamins needed.C. Our body will function moreD. Our body simply gets rid of them.properly.25. The passage has probably been taken from_________.A. a sports magazineB. a journal of medical scienceC. an aged magazineD. a youth journalPassage TwoIdeal conditions for flying a kite are a large open space like field or a beach, and a steady wind, blowing from one direction, without any sudden gusts. Avoid spots such as clearings or river banks, where the wind is likely to change suddenly, Small kites will be much easier to launch in a gentle wind, and may well tear if the wind is too strong. Big kites on the other hand, will only take off in a reasonably strong wind. Stand with your back to the wind and un wind several meters of line, holding the kite at arm’s length and pulling on the line gently. With a larger kite, ask friend to help. He should stand a little way off, the kite held out in front of him and let go when you give the signal. A kite should never be thrown into the air, but simply released when the wind is strong enough to lift it.Be very careful how you handle your kite and try to avoid any sudden movement once it is in the air. If a particularly violent gust of wind causes it to lose height, unwind a little of the line. Never pull it along on the ground once it has come down, or you will tear it.If you want to bring kite down in a hurry, make the line fast or give it to someone to hold, put your arm over the line and run towards the kite. Always take a pair of scissors, some glue and two or three strips of crepe paper with you for on-the-spot repairs.Never fly a kite near a railway line or a busy road. If the kite comes down suddenly in front of a car, it may cause and accident. Never fly a kite in stormy weather because it could act as a lightning conductor (with you as the earth)!26. Where do people often fly kites?A. In a large open field with sudden gusts.B. In a large open area with a strong wind.C. In a large open space with a steady wind blowing fro one direction.D. At a beach with a gentle wind.27. The passage is mainly about_________.A. the significance of flying a kiteB. the place selection and ways of flying akiteC. some warnings to flying a kiteD. both B and C.28. The underlined word “clearings” in the first paragraph probably means_________.A. open spacesB. large playing-groundsC. places for clearing thingsD. areas which are very clear29. According to the passage, how should we bring a kite down in a hurry?A. Pull the line gently and run towards the kite.B. Fix the line to a place, put the arm over the line and run towards the kite.C. Give the kite to someone to hold, put the arm over the line and run towards the kite.D. Pull the kite and wind the line fast.30. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?A. Most people like to fly kites.B. Flying a kite near a railway line is dangerous.C. It is very difficult to find and ideal space for flying a kite.D. There are many ways in which people fly their kites.Passage ThreeMany people think that when they become rich and successful, happiness will naturally follow. Let me tell you that nothing is further from the truth. The world is full of very rich people who are as miserable as if they ere living in hell. We have read stories about movie stars who committed suicide or died from drugs. Quite clearly, money is not the only answer to all problems.Wealth obtained through dishonest means does not bring happiness. Lottery winnings do not bring happiness. Gambling winnings do not bring happiness. To my mind, the secret to happiness lies in your successful work, in your contribution towards others’ happiness and in luck or dishonest means, you will know that it is ill-gamed money. If you get your money by taking advantage of others or by hurting others, your wealth will not be happy with it. You will think you are a base person.Long-term happiness is based on honesty, productive work, contribution, and self-esteem. Happiness is not an end: It is a process. It is a continuous process of honest, productive work which makes a real contribution to others and makes you feel you are a useful, worthy person. As Dr. Wayne wrote, “Ther e is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.” There is no use saying “Someday when I achieve these goals, when I get a car, build a house and own my own business, then I will be really happy.” Life just does not work that way. If you wait for certain things to happen and depend on the external circumstances of life to make you happy, you will always feel unfulfilled. There will always be something missing.31. The best title for this passage is______.A. What is HappinessB. HappinessC. Wealth and HappinessD. Process of Happiness32. According to this passage, which of the following statement is right?A. The richer you’re, the happier you’re.B. Wealth means happiness.C. Movie stars are happy.D. Rich people are not always happy.33. In the second paragraph, the word “means” is equal to ______. .A. waysB. worksC. placesD. hearts34. Long-term happiness is based on the following except______.A. self-esteemB. contributionC. productive workD. lottery winnings35. According to the passage, a person feels happy when he______.A. gets a carB. builds a houseC. owns his own businessD. feels that he is a useful, worthy personPassage FourUnder normal conditions, the act of communication requires the presence of at leasttwo persons: one who sends and one who receives the communication. In order to communicate thoughts and feelings, there must be a conventional system of signs orsymbols that mean the same to the sender and the receiver. The means of communication are too numerous and varied for systematic classification; therefore, the analysis must begin with the means of receiving communication. Reception of communication is achieved by our senses. Sight, hearing, and touching seem to play themost important roles. Smell and taste play very limited roles, for they cannot receive intellectual expression from fully developed systems of sings and symbols.Examples of visual communication are gesture and imitation. Although both frequently accompany speech, there are systems that rely solely on sight, such as those used by deafand dumb persons. Another means of communicating visually is by signals of fire, smoke, flags, or flashing light. Feelings may be simply communicated by touch, such as by handshaking or backslapping, although a highly developed system of hand-stroking hasenabled blind, deaf, and dumb persons to communicate intelligently. Whistling to someone, applauding in a theater, and other forms of communication by sound rely upon the ear as areceiver. The most fully developed form of auditory communication is, of course, thespoken language. The means of communication mentioned so far have two features in common: they lastonly a short time, and the persons involved must be relatively close to each other. Therefore, all are restricted in time and space.36. Reception of communication ___________A. is more important than sending messagesB. depends on two personsC. involves use of the sensesD. play only limited roles37. Applauding is specifically mentioned as an example of __________.A. communication by soundB. gesture and imitationC. communication by sending a messageD. communication between the listener and speaker38. Persons who cannot see, hear, or speak are able to communicate through_________.A. gesturingB. handshakingC. smellingD. hand-stroking39. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affect people. A person’s conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and they way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.”Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one, “Y ou’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.”It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteems, it is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let’s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.11. What does the author try to prove by citing “what kind of impression am I making?” BA. Shy people benefit from their caring about their appearance.B. People’s shyness made them care too much about their appearance and actions.C. It’s natural that shy people don’t believe other’s compliments.D. Shy people think they are different from others.12.
