As Martin Luther King in the black liberation movement, so many enemies. Once, a bomb exploded and destroyed his house. In April 18, 1968, a man who will always remember the day --39 years of age in Memphis City, city, was killed by a racist.

At that time, black people in the southern states were not treated equally. Although the United States ended slavery in 1865, the southern states passed their own laws, and continued to separate whites and blacks. The law forbids blacks and whites. In stores, restaurants, hospitals, buses and trains all have a separate area for black people. Black children go to school alone. Spending on education in black children and 1/4 of white children. The southern states had no right to vote.

My first encounter with deeper meanings of populism came when I was nineteen, working as a field secretary for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in St. Augustine, Florida in 1964. One day I was caught by five men and a woman who were members of the Ku Klux Klan. They accused me of being a "communist and a Yankee." I replied, "I'm no Yankee – my family has been in the South since before the Revolution. And I'm not a communist. I'm a populist. I believe that blacks and poor whites should join to do something about the big shots who keep us divided." For a few minutes we talked about what such a movement might look like. Then they let me go. When he learned of the incident, Martin Luther King, head of SCLC, told me that he identified with the populist tradition and assigned me to organize poor whites.

1808, there was a ban on the import of slaves. The prohibition(禁令） was in vein because the trade continued. 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Lincoln officially ended slavery. However, the proclamation could not instantly transform attitudes of many citizens or the legacy of a country that had considered African Americans as less than human. 1865, the Emancipation Proclamation was confirmed by the 13th amendment (修改）of the Constitution which outlawed slavery and involuntary servitude

1960, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that segregation was illegal in interstate bus and train stations. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 forbade discrimination in public places and it is also established the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), a U.S. government agency that takes employment discrimination complaints to court, in an effort to enforce laws that prohibit job discrimination. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 suspended the use of voter qualification tests, creating a sharp increase in black voter registration. These tests had been used to disqualify African Americans from their voting rights.
