The road to modern English
At the end of the 16th century, about f_i_v_e_t_o_s_e_v_e_n_m__i_ll_io_n_ people spoke English. Nearly all of them lived in England.
In 1620 some British settlers moved to A__m_e_r_i_c_a. In the 18th century, some British people were taken to _A_u_s_t_r_a_li_a. English began to be spoken in both countries.
