Unit 3 Automobile Engines
Engines have at least two valves per cylinder, one intake valve and one exhaust valve. Many newer engines are using multiple intake and exhaust valves per cylinder for increased engine power and efficiency[4].
Unit 3 Automobile Engines
The crankshaft is located below the cylinders on an inline engine, at the base of the V on a V-type engine and between the cylinder banks on a flat engine[3]. As the pistons move up and down, they turn the crankshaft just like your legs pump up and down to turn the crank that is connected to the pedals of a bicycle.
Unit 3 Automobile Engines
A common configuration is to have one camshaft located in the engine block with the lifters connecting to the valves through a series of linkages. The camshaft must be synchronized with the crankshaft so that the camshaft makes one revolution for every two revolutions of the crankshaft. In most engines, this is done by a "Timing Chain" (similar to a bicycle chain) that connects the camshaft with the crankshaft.

1 . The purpose of the lubrication system is to circulate oil through the engine. Many parts inside the engine, such as the camshaft, crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons are connected to other metal parts. When parts rub together, friction is created. Friction produces heat. Although two metal surfaces may appear smooth to the naked eye, they may look rough when seen through a microscope.

2 . An engine must have a good lubrication system. Without it, the friction heat from the contact of the moving parts would wear the parts and cause power loss. Oil, when placed between two moving parts, separates them with a film. This oil film prevents the parts from rubbing against each other. This oil film also cushions the parts, giving quieter and smoother engine operation.

Though there are several types of CVTs, most cars use a pair of variable-diameter pulleys, each shaped like a pair of opposing cones, with a metal belt or chain running between them(Fig.9-6) [1]. Classification and Main Components of Engine
• Connecting rods, crankshaft and valve gear exist in all kinds of vehicles['vi:ɪkl]. The basic composition[,kɔmpə'ziʃən] of an engine is shown in Fig.3.1.
Crankcase
• The crankcase houses the crankshaft and some times also the camshaft. The cylinders are bolted to the crankcase. The crankcase is usually divided at the height of the crankshaft bearings.
• The crankshaft is located at the bottom side of the cylinder block and is covered by what is called the pan.
