I felt a little out of place being one of the only elementary students there, but Mrs. Robertson had entered me into the exam to give me experience.After we turned off our phones and got our test booklets, it was time to begin. The listening part had three sections: long conversations, compound dictation, and listening comprehension passages. I had practiced all of those with my tutors, but I was still super nervous!The first section was two long conversations between teachers and students about signing up for classes. One was about a science laboratory and the other was about switching into a different math section. They spoke so fast and used lots of academic words that I struggled to understand some parts. I had to concentrate really hard!Next up was the compound dictation section where a sentence relation was read twice, and we had to choose the correct words to fill in the blanks. things like "Participation in the ___ club improved her public _____ abilities." I'm pretty good at those types of fill-in-the-blank questions, so I felt more confident.But then came the hardest part - the listening comprehension passages! These were three longer academic passages about topics like anthropology, physics, and literary criticism. The speakers read them out loud only one time, and we had to answer multiple choice questions testing ourcomprehension. They used such big fancy vocabulary that I could barely follow along. Words like "archaeological" and "isotopic" and "contemporary paradigms." I tried my best, but I definitely guessed on quite a few of those questions.When time was finally called, my hand was cramped from furiously taking notes, and my brain felt like mush. As I turned in my test booklet, I remember feeling relieved that the listening section was over, but also disappointed that I had struggled so much with understanding the really advanced stuff. Even though I'm just a 4th grader, I had hoped to do better.On the car ride home, my mom could see I was feeling down. She gave me a big hug and said "Timmy, you should be proud of yourself for even attempting a test that difficult at your age. Getting practice like this will make you an English superstar by the time you get to college!" Mr. Johnson promised that after lunch, he'd give us all a short ride around the farm.Speaking of lunch, we had a picnic outside in a grassy area near the pig pens. I'm not going to lie, those pigs were pretty smelly! But it was still cool to watch them snort and roll around in the mud. We all giggled every time they made their iconic oinking sounds.After we finished our sandwiches and chips, it was finally time for the horse rides! Mr. Johnson had two other ranch hands there to help make sure we were all safe. I was a little nervous when it was my turn, but Mr. Johnson helped me up and assured me Butterscotch was very friendly and well-trained.Riding that horse was the best experience ever! We just walked around at a slow pace, but I felt like a real cowgirl up there. I could see over the tops of the fences and buildings from up so high. The view was amazing. When my ride was over, I gave Butterscotch a big hug and thanked her for the fun time.On our way back to the bus, we got to peek into the chicken coops. We made miniature pyramids out of sugar cubes in class, but they kept falling apart. Guess the ancient Egyptians were just better builders than us!In math, we're learning about fractions now. I'm still struggling though, so Mom and Dad have been helping me practice at home.One of my favorite subjects is reading. We just finished this awesome book called The BFG by Roald Dahl. It's about this giant who catches dreams and shares them with kids by blowing dream-dust through their windows at night. The main character is a little orphan girl named Sophie who discovers the BFG's secret life. I loved all the funny made-up words the BFG used tospeak, like "whizzpopping" and "delumptious." Maybe if I keep reading, my vocabulary will get that good too!In science, we've been learning about the human body. We even got to dissect a frog, which was pretty gross but really cool at the same time! I was surprised by how many organs and stuff were packed inside that little guy. We had to find the heart, lungs, stomach, and intestines. Miss Jacobs, our science teacher, showed us how blood pumps through the heart and gets oxygen from the lungs. It's honestly amazing that all those body parts can fit together and keep working so we can live!Recess and gym are definitely my favorite times during the school day.
