A You do not need every word to understand the meaning of what you read . In fact , too much emphasis (强调) on separate words both slows your speed and reduces your comprehension . First , any habit which slows down your silent reading to the speed at which you speak , or read aloud , is inefficient . If you point to each word as you read , or move your head , or form the words with your lips , you read poorly . Less obvious habits also hold back reading efficiency (效率) . One is “saying” each word silently by moving your tongue or throat ; another is “ hearing” each word as you read . These are habits which should have been outgrown long ago . The beginning reader is learning how letters can make words , how written words are pronounced , and how sentences are put together . Your reading purpose is quite different ; it is to understand meaning . It has been supposed that up to 75% of the words in English sentences are not really necessary for expressing the meaning . The secret of silent reading is to find out those key words and phrases which carry the thought , and to pay less attention to words which exist only for grammatical completeness . An efficient reader can grasp the meaning fr om a page at least twice as fast as he can read the page aloud . He takes in a whole phrase or thought unit at a time . If he “says” or “hears” words to himself , they are selected ones , said for emphasis . 56.This passage is mainly about .A.improving eye movementB.reading more widelyC.changing poor r eading habitsD.reading as fast as you can 57.Saying each word to yourself as you read .A.improves comprehensionB.increases reading speedC.gives too much emphasisD.reduces reading efficiency 58.Our reading purpose should be .A.to understand all the wordsB.to make fewer eye movementsC.to understand meaningD.to understand the grammatical structures 59.While reading , efficient readers usually .A.move their eyes quicklyB.take in whole phrases or thought unitsC.point at key wordsD.read only important points for speed B Despite their name , the Want Family don’t want much . They want enough money for a nice house and a holiday every year . But they don’t’ want to be millionaires . They want to do well at their jobs . But they don’t want to be the big boss . They do want to spend time improving their garden , visiting their families and taking their two kids , Nicolas and Leuan , to McDonald’s for lunch . But they don’t want to be famous . The Wants just want to be normal. That’s why they are famous . They have been selected as the most normal family in Britain . After a six-month search for the most ordinary family in Britain , the Wants were selected from hundreds of applicants . Jo hn wants a job in marketing for a food company , Claire has a part-time job renting out children’s play equipment . John doesn’t understand why they were chosen to represent ordinary English families . How are they normal ? That is not a bad question . Nearl y ev eryone does some of the things that the Wants do .But veryfew people do all of them . There have been great changes in the social structure of British life . It is becoming more common for people to have children when they are older than the Wants , and to have one child instead of two . A household with two children may be headed by a single parent , usually the mother . Or perhaps dad and mum are still together , but not married . Or maybe dad and mum are married . Dad goes out to work and mum stays at home and looks after the kids . They have traditional values —Every weekend the whole family goes to church . “What we have here is not an average family , but a traditional family,” says Cary Cooper , professor of philosophy at Lancaster University . “There is no such thing as a normal family anymore , in the way there was 20 or 30 years ago . Of course the Wants exist , but for what do we need to celebrate them ?”Perhaps because we think normal families are an endangered species . Examples of them have to be preserved (保护)to show future generations . 60.The Wants were selected as the most normal family in Britain because .A.they represent traditional Engish familiesB.they don’t want muchC.they don’t want to be famousD.they want to be normal 61.The following statements describe the great changes in British life EXCEPT that . A.people have kids later than 20 or 30 years ago B.some children are brought up by a single parent C.most families go to church every weekend D.it’s more common for families to have only one kid 62.We may infer from the passage that . A.most British families hold traditional values B.traditional families are becoming fewer and fewer C.future generations are expected to study traditional families D.traditional families no longer exist in Britain 63.What might be the most suitable title for this passage ?A.An Ordinary FamilyB.Families of Future GenerationsC.Celebration of a Family CompetitionD.A Normal But Special Family C To understand the marketing concept , it is only necessary to understand the difference between marketing and selling . Not too many years ago , most industries fixed their attention mainly on the production of goods , and then depended on “persuasive salesmanship” to move as much of these goods as possible and then change them into money . Marketing , on the other hand , focuses on the wants of customers . It begins with first understanding the preferences and demands of consumers and then producing goods that will satisfy them . This eye-on-the-consumer way is known as the marketing concept , which simply means that instead of trying to sell whatever is easiest to produce or buy for resale , the makers and dealers first try to find out what the consumer wants to buy . This concept does not mean that business is friendly or that consumer satisfaction is more important than profit in a company . Successful businessmen and producers , however , recognize that the surest route to profit is through understanding and satisfying customers . A striking example of the importance of satisfying customers presented itself in mid-1985 , when Coca-Cola changed the flavor of its drink . The non-acceptance of the new flavor by a large majority of the public brought about quick return of the Classic Coke , which was then marketed alongside the new . King Customer ruled ! 64.The marketing concept discussed in the passage is . A.the practice of turning goods into money B.the customer-centered way C.a way of making more goods D.a form of persuasive salesmanship 65.What mattered most for producers before the marketing concept was widely accepted ?A.Needs and understanding of the market .B.Production and profit of a company .C.Satisfaction of customers .D.Preference of businessmen . 66.According to the passage , the underlined word “move” (paragraph1) means .A.sellB.changeC.produceD.consume 67.What does the return of the Classic Coke best show ? A.Traditional goods have a stronger attraction to the majority of people . B.It takes time for a new product to be accepted by the public . C.Consumers with different tastes are often difficult to please . D.Products must be designed to suit the taste of the consumers . D To Lauder Exchange Program : Gaia Filicori was a student in my Humanities class for the 2002-2003 year . From the first week of classes it was obvious that Gaia was an excellent student and a very sociable young lady . She was always eager to join in class discussions . Gaia’s ability to communicate her own ideas is a skill that many of us work for a very long time to achieve . Gaia also has a deep curiosity about the world around her . The simple fact that she desires to spend a year in another country is proof enough . I have also seen her show this curiosity in class . She asked some of the most interesting and thoughtful questions of any of the students in her class . When others were content to accept a point , Gaia would see from a new angle that none of us had tried . As a student in Humanities , Gaia was requ ired to complete a group project . The project was to write a page for a Humanities textbook using text and multi-media . It was a challenging task and Gaia’s group was experiencing some difficulties . Yet , they had an easier time of it because they did not hesitate to come to me with their problems and try to work them out . As a result Gaia and her group had one of the more successful projects . The ability needed to recognize a problem and ask for help to solve it will be of great value if she is selected to be a Lauder Exchange student . Gala’s interest in the world around her will serve her well as a Lauder Exchange student . The ease with which she gets along with others and the ease with which she makes new friends will also help her as she tries to learn in a foreign setting . I have no doubts that Gaia would be a wonderful representative of the Lauder Program , Stuyvesant High School , and the United States . Perry Jones Social Studies Stuyvesant High School If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me . 212-312-4800;*************** 68.The main purpose of this letter is to A.express a student’s curiosity about the world B.introduce a student to an exchange program C.praise an excellent student D.encourage a student to join in an exchange program 69.According to the writer , Gaia seems to h ave all the following abilities EXCEPT . municating well with others B.thinking about things from different angles C.making new friends D.learning a language quickly in a foreign setting 70.Gaia shows her curiosity about the world by . A.hoping to spend a year in another country B.being content to accept a point C.getting along well with others D.serving well as a Lauder Exchange student 71.Perry Jones might be . A.Gala’s classmate B.a person in charge of Stuyvesant High School C.Gaia’s teacher D.a person in charge of Lauder Exchange Program E We sometimes think humans are the only species which can bear anxiety , but stress seems to affect the immune (免疫) system of lower animals too . In one experiment , for example , behavioral scientist Mark Lauden , at the University of Denver , gave mild electric shocks to 24 rats . Half of the animals could turn off the electricity by turning a wheel in their cage , while the other half could not . The rats in the two groups were paired so that each time one rat turned the wheel it protected both itself and its helpless partner from the shock. Lauden found that the immune reaction was below normal in the helpless rats but not in those that could turn off the electricity . What he has proved is that lack of control over an event , not the experience itself , is what weakens the immune system . Other researchers agree. Jay Weiss , a scientist at Duke University School of Medicine , has shown that animals who are allowed to control unpleasant stimuli (刺激)don’t develop sleep disorder or changes in brain chemistry of stressed rats . But if the animals are faced with situations they have no control over, they later behave passively when faced with experiences they can control . Such findings make researchers believe that the experience or feeling of helplessness is one of the most harmful factors in stress. One of the most surprising examples of how the mind can change the immune reaction was discovered by chance. In 1995 Robert Ader at the University of Rochester School of Medicine experimented on mice to avoid saccharin (糖精)by feeding them at the same time with the sweetener and a drug that while harming their immune systems caused stomach upsets . Connecting the saccharin with stomach pains , the mice quickly learned to avoid the sweetener . In order to get rid of this dislike for the sweetener, Ader fed the animals with saccharin again , this time without the drug , and was astonished to find that those mice that had received the highest amount of sweetener the first time died . He believed that saccharin alone weakened their immune systems enough to kill them. uden’s experiment showed that the immune system of those rats who could turn off the electricity .A.was strengthenedB.was not affectedC.was changedD.was weakened 73.According to the passage , the experience of helplessness causes rats to .A.try to control unpleasant stimuliB.turn off the electricityC.behave passively I controllable situationsD.become harmful 74.The reason why the mice in Ader’s experiment avoided saccharin was that .A.they disliked its tasteB.it affected their immune systemsC.it led to stomach painsD.they connected it with stomach pains 75.According to the passage , the most probable reason for the death of the mice in Ader’s experiment was that . A.they had been weakened by the saccharin B.the sweetener was poisonous to them C.the immune systems had been changed by the mind D. they had taken too much sweetener during the first experiment 第Ⅱ卷(⾮选择题,共35分) 第⼆节书⾯表达(满分25分) 假设你是李华,你所在的城市向市民征求交通⽅⾯的意见。

From his coat he withdrew a make-up kit, a lipstick and two tubes of toothpaste.“I’m disappointed in you, Alfred!” said the little gray-haired man.“Sorry, sir. Please forgive me. It’s the first time I’ve ever done such a thing,” Alfred lied, hoping to gain the old man’s sympathy.Mr. Carr’s brow furrowed(皱起)as he reached for the phone, “Do you take me for a fool? Let’s see what the police have to say. But first I’ll call your mother and let her know her son is heading to jail. ”“Do whatever you want,” Alfred shot back, trying to sound big. But deep down he felt like a child. He imagined his mother rushing in, eyes burning with anger, maybe in tears. Yet he wanted her to come quickly before Mr. Carr called the police.Mr. Carr was surprised when Mrs. Higgins finally arrived. She was very calm, quiet and friendly. “Is Alfred in trouble?” she asked.“He’s been stealing from the store,” the old man coolly replied.Mrs. Higgins put out her hand and touched Mr. Carr’s arm with great gentleness as if she knew just how he felt. She spoke as if she did not want to cause him any more trouble. “What do you want to do, Mr. Carr?”The woman’s calm and gentle manner disarmed the once-angry store owner. “I was going to get a cop. But I don’t want to be cruel. Tell your son not to com e back here again, and I’ll let it go. ” Then he warmly shook Mrs. Higgins’s hand.Mrs. Higgins thanked the old man for his kindness, then mother and son left. They walked along the street in silence. When they arrived home his mother simply said, “G o t o bed, you fool. ” In his bedroom, Alfred heard his mother in the kitchen. He felt no shame, only pride in his mother’s actions. “She was smooth!” he thought. He went to the kitchen to tell her how great she was, but was shocked by what he saw.His mothe r’s face looked frightened, broken. Not the cool, bright face he saw earlier. Her lips moved nervously. She looked very old. There were tears in her eyes. This picture of his mother made him want to cry. He felt his youth ending. It was far away from my home city and traveling alone every day wasn’t considered possible. It was not in my fate to be a doctor, so the second choice I considered was to become a teacher.I always loved helping my younger brother and sister with their studies which in turn helped me in mine. The love and care provided by my teachers and the support of my parents made me what I am today. It has been 24 years, but each day is as new and fresh as the first. Each day has so many memories.Students look so lovely when they share their problems with me whether they are about studies or about home. I learned a lot in the process of solving their problems. I always wanted my students to feel comfortable with me, take me as one of them and not treat me like a stranger. I gave my students what they needed and did not force them to do anything. Meeting with old students makes me feel alive. The brightness in their eyes gives me happiness and it keeps me going. Teaching has given me pleasure and satisfaction.Life should be all about gaining and giving away knowledge. Parents should particularly pay attention to their children exploring their hidden talents. When that didn’t happen, she turned to the news media.By late Tuesday, The Journal’s story had become widespread, with 130,000 web hits and links from The Drudge Report and The New Yorker websites.Thompson’s patience brought good results minutes after the story first appeared. The landscaper hadn’t seen the news, but came to her house at 7:30 pm on Monday to drop off a business card and a note.“He was really apologetic about it,” Thompson said. “I’m not happy about it of course, but I am OK that he came forward finally and did apologize for it and is willing to fix it.”Patrick Kukanu, owner of Kupak Landscapes Ltd., said it was a mistake. “Our BobCat guy was supposed to be three blocks down,” Kukanu said. “He had the wrong address.”When the company realized what had happened on Saturday, Kukanu said several attempts were made to contact the homeowner or neighbors. The company offered to replace the lawn immediately on Tuesday, but that will wait.“It’s just an honest mistake,” Kukanu said. “It’s an error and we’ll gladly correct it.”53. With friends we can “be ourselves”, which means expressing our feelings freely. The problem with strangers is that we have to make much effort: psychologists (心理学家) cal l it “impression management”. We control our behavior more tightly and our impression management starts being very active. But according to recent research, there are hidden benefits to this effort and a lesson for all of us about how we should treat those we know well. The researchers had participants (参与者) predict how pleasurable it would be to chat with their friends and a complete stranger. They then had a quick chat and rated how good they felt afterwards. What they found was that people enjoyed talking to their friends less than they predicted. On the other hand, they had more fun talking to a stranger than they had predicted. So what’s going on here? How can people be having more fun than they imagine talking to complete strangers and less with the person they are in a long-term relationship with? What the researchers found was that it comes down to whether or not you’re making an effort. Sometimes when we talk to our friends we don’t make much effort to entertain them or to present ourselves in the best light. But we do tend to make much effort with strangers. In a follow-up study the researchers told participants to make an effort with their friends and then their enjoyment of the social communication improved in line with their predictions.
