It’s the bee’s knees. This expression means that something is of excellence or of v ery high quality. For example, “Try this chocolate. It’s the bee’s knees.”4. To feel a bit under the weather.I use this expression in many different situations but most use it to refer to feeling ill, or unwell. You would not use this phras e if you were feeling extremely unwell. It is only for those time s when you are feeling a little ill, or suffering from something slightly like a cold or a cough. ASometimes children do not do what their parents tell them to do.When this happens,a parent tries to help the child to do the right thing. When this does not work, the parent usually punishes the child. There are many things that a parent can do.One thing that people have done is to spank(打屁股)the child. When a parent spanks a child, they will use their hand or a hard object to strike them on the bottom. This means showing the child that they have done something wrong. One parent remembers being spanked when he was a child. His parents used a wooden spoon. When he spanked his own children with his hand, he saw that he put a red mark on his child’s leg.He never did that again. One problem with spanking is that it teaches the child to hit someone when they do not like what the other person is doing.Another problem with spanking is that the parent is usually angry and can hit the child too hard.Sometimes parents will use spanking for everything and not try other ways to get the child to do the right thing. Many parents are not sure of what to do instead of spanking. Some people think that their religion tells them that spanking is okay. Some think that the law lets them do it.The courts(法院)say that parents have the right to teach their children how to behave.Other things should be tried before a parent decides to spank a child.Telling the child exactly what is wanted from them can be one thing.Giving a child more than one choice is another thing that can be tried.Getting down to the child’s level and taking a more child-friendly approach can help as well.21.According to the passage, when children do something wrong, one thing that parents usually do to punish them is to______.A.strike them on the bottom B.try to help them do the right thingC.teach them what to do D.take them to court22.Which of the following is NOT the problem caused by spanking?A.It teaches the child to hit others when they offend him or her.B.The parents may get angry and hit the child too hard.C.Sometimes parents may use spanking for everything.D.It makes parents try other ways to make the child do right.23.From this passage,we can conclude that _______.A.good children always do the right thingB.parents should try their best to avoid spanking their childrenC.parents have no choice but to spank their childrenD.children can have more than one choice to avoid being spankedBIn addition to seeing wonderful films, one of the joys of coming to the Quad Cinema is to hang out in the area. Before coming here, China seemed alien to me ----a place that expected to be hugely dissimilar from my own British culture. After travelling from Beijing up to Xi'an, I wanted to challenge myself by choosing a smaller town----Xiahe in Gansu Province. I arrived in Lanzhou at around 5 am, but there were no buses to Xiahe. Imanaged to spot a policeman and attempted to explain my destination to him in simple English, praying that he would understand. I wasn't sure that he did but I just followed him anyway as I had no choice. He took me on a bus and I didn't know where I was going. Luckily, I met a student who explained to me in English that the policeman was taking me to another bus station where I could take a bus to Xiahe. During this conversation a third man said he was also a policeman and would help me buy tickets. But as he was not in uniform, I was a little doubtful. The uniformed policeman told me it was OK to go with the third man, so I got off the bus with the so-called policeman who at this point, disappeared and I was left in the middle of nowhere. I stood panicking. Around one minute later a police car came and stopped right by me. It was the un-uniformed policeman. I got into the car and he dropped me directly at the bus station, and helped me buy the ticket. This is one of many experiences that I have had in China. I realized that however different this culture was, there was one thing that would always stand out—kindness. In the west we seem to lack the foundation of trust, yet in China it seems that there will always be someone to answer your questions and lead you the right way.28. He went to get a car to pick the author up.C. The author didn't behave in a friendly way.D. The author found a uniformed policeman to help him.31. According to the text, what impressed the author deeply in China?A. Beautiful scenes.B. Terrible transportation.C. Troubles in small towns.D. People's kindness.DAsk a teacher to name the most annoying invention of recent years and they will often mention the mobile phone. Disturbed by the problems they create, many head teachers have ordered that pupils should keep their phones switched off at school. Others have told pupils to leave them at home. However, education researchers at The University of Nottingham believe it is time that phone bans were reassessed, because mobile phones can be a powerful learning aid, they say. Dr Elizabeth Hartnell-Young and her colleagues have reached this conclusion after studying the consequences of allowing pupils in five secondary schools to use either their own mobile phones or the new generation of ‘smartphones’ in lessons.During the nine-month experiment, 14- to-16-year-old pupils used the phones for a wide range of educational purposes, including creating short movies, setting homework reminders, recording a teacher reading a poem, and timing experiments with the phones’ stopwatches. The smartphones, which could be connected to the Internet, also allowed pupils to access revision websites, log into the school email system, or transfer (转存) electronic files between school and home. The research involved 331 pupils in schools in Cambridgeshire, West Berkshire and Nottingham. “At the start of the study, even pupils were often surprised at the thought that mobile phones could be used for learning,” Dr Hartnell-Young said. “After their hands-on experience, almost all pupils said they had enjoyed the project and felt more inspired.”Some teachers found that pupils who lacked confidence gained most from the project. However, they recognized that greater use of mobile phones in schools could cause problems.32. We can infer from the first paragraph that .A. teachers are strongly against students owning mobile phonesB. mobile phones should be developed to meet students’ needsC. students are free to use their mobile phones at schoolD. mobile phones are usually forbidden to be used at school33. When the students first used mobile phones for learning, they .A. all enjoyed the project very muchB. didn’t know what they were used forC. didn’t fully realize the learning functions of mobile phonesD. were surprised that they were allowed to use mobile phones in schools34. Who benefited most from the project?A. Older pupils.B. Pupils who were not confident.C. Younger pupils.D. Pupils who were confident.35. The purpose of the text is to tell us that .A. mobile phones can actually help students learnB. mobile phones begin to be widely used in schoolsC. too much use of mobile phones in schools can cause problemsD. the mobile phone is considered the most annoying invention of recent years第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Medical bills have become a heavy burden on families and high-end medical resources still fall short of meeting the growing demand of the public.”To solve the problem, a two-pronged (双管齐下的) approach must be taken. One is to establish medical partnerships to strengthen cooperation between major hospitals and community clinics. The other is to bring forward Internet Plus Healthcare to promote the sharing of quality medical resources. The government will see to it that long-distance healthcare services cover all county-level hospitals. People who are skeptical about this argument just need to look at personal computers. It is the continual shrinkage of components that have brought about the explosion of computing power and enabled these computers to be accessible to people across the world.Inspired by this, researchers have been working on areas where making things small may mean big results. And this year, the Nobel Prize has challenged the convention of celebrating big by presenting the biggest prizes to discoveries on the smallest scales. The committee presented the Nobel Prize for medicine to Yoshinori Ohsumi of the Tokyo Institute of Technology, for his research on “autophagy”, which is a “self-eating process seen in cells”.What’s more, in recognition of their working on the unique nature of matter in extreme states and taking their research all the way down to an atomic scale, the Nobel Prize for physics was awarded to three British-born scientists who presently work in the US.Another exceptional new field is that of nanotechnology (纳米技术). The Nobel prize for chemistry was awarded to a scientist who managed to build the world’s tiniest machines out of molecules (分子), including a nano-sized car, which are so small that they are not seen by the human eye.Small as the subjects are, the benefits of the scientists’ research are set to be huge. More importantly, their inventions may even eventually be turned into products that benefit mankind.Ohsumi’s research on “autophagy” sh ines a light on common diseases such a Parkinson’s and diabetes. As for the molecular motors, they’re preparing to bring huge potential to the fields of medicine and energy. “The ground-breaking discoveries in physics have lighted a firestorm of research, and it’s only a matter of time before their research leads to advances as unimaginable to us now as computer chips were a hundred years ago,” Laura H. Greene, president-elect of the American physical society told The New York Times.28. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.DTaste is such subjective matter that we do not usually conduct preference tests for food. The most you can say about anyone’s preference is that it’s one person’s opinion. But because the two big cola companies ---- Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola are marketed so aggressively, we’ve wondered how big a role taste preference actually plays in brand loyalty. We set up a taste test that challenged people who identified themselves as either Coca-Cola or Pepsi fans: Find your brand in a blind tasting. We invited staff volunteers who had a strong liking for either Coca-Cola or Pepsi, Diet Coke, or Diet Pepsi. These were people who thought they’d have no trouble telling their brand from the other brand. We eventually located 19 regular cola drinkers and 27 diet cola drinkers. Then we fed them four unidentified samples of cola one at a time, regular colas for the one group, diet versions for the other. We asked them to tell us whether each sample was Coke or Pepsi; then we analyzed the records statistically to compare the participants’ choices with what mere guess-work could have accomplished.Getting all four samples right was a tough test, but not too tough, we thought, for people who believed they could recognize their brand. In the end, only 7 out of 19 regular cola drinkers correctly identified their brand of choice in all four trials. The diet-cola drinkers did a little worse-only 7 to 27 identified all four samples correctly. While both groups did better than chance would predict, nearly half the participants in each group made the wrong choice two or more times. Two people got all four samples wrong. Overall, half the participants did about as well on the last round tasting as on the first, so tiredness or taste burnout was not a factor. Our preference test result suggests that only a few Pepsi participants and Coke fans may really be able to tell their favorite brand by taste and price.32. According to the passage the preference test was conducted in order to______.A. show that a person’s opinion about taste is mere guess-workB. show which cola is the more liking of the drinkersC. find out the role taste preference plays in a person’s choice of drinkingD. compare the ability of the participants in choosing their drinks33. It is implied in the first paragraph that ________.A. the competition between the two colas is very strongB. the improvement of quality is the chief concern of the two cola companiesC. the purpose of taste tests is to promote the sale of colasD. blind tasting is necessary for identifying fans34. The statistics recorded in the preference tests show that________.A. Coca-Cola and Pepsi are people’s two favorite drinksB. few people had trouble telling Coca-Cola from PepsiC. peop le’s tastes differ from one anotherD. there is not much difference in taste between Coca-Cola and Pepsi35. The author’s purpose in writing this passage is to _______A. argue that taste testing is an important marketing strategyB. show that taste preference is highly subjectiveC. emphasize that taste and price are closely related to each otherD. recommend that blind tasting be introduced in the quality control of colas.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
