The Method of Least SquaresHervéAbdi11IntroductionThe least square methods(LSM)is probably the most popular tech-nique in statistics.This is due to several factors.First,most com-mon estimators can be casted within this framework.For exam-ple,the mean of a distribution is the value that minimizes the sum of squared deviations of the scores.Second,using squares makes LSM mathematically very tractable because the Pythagorean theo-rem indicates that,when the error is independent of an estimated quantity,one can add the squared error and the squared estimated quantity.Third,the mathematical tools and algorithms involved in LSM(derivatives,eigendecomposition,singular value decomposi-tion)have been well studied for a relatively long time.LSM is one of the oldest techniques of modern statistics,and even though ancestors of LSM can be traced up to Greek mathe-matics,thefirst modern precursor is probably Galileo(see Harper, 1974,for a history and pre-history of LSM).The modern approach wasfirst exposed in1805by the French mathematician Legendre in a now classic memoir,but this method is somewhat older be-cause it turned out that,after the publication of Legendre’s mem-oir,Gauss(the famous German mathematician)contested Legen-1In:Neil Salkind(Ed.)(2007).Encyclopedia of Measurement and Statistics. We prove that the iterative“Turbo”-like decoding of analog prod-uct codes indeed is an estimation in the least-squares sense and thus correspond to the optimum maximum-likelihood decoding.I.I NTRODUCTIONSince the invention of“Turbo”codes in1993[1],the coding community has developed some insights into the behavior of iterative decoding.So-called EXIT charts[5]show the devel-opment of the mutual information between the transmitted data and the extrinsic information(a-priori of the following decod-ing).Thus they are a suitable tool to view the convergence in the water-fall region of the bit-error rate curves.At the high-SNR far end of the curve,the distance properties of the code determine the performance.The minimum distance can be es-timated by sending simple weight-2or weight-3patterns and checking for the weight of the encoded sequence.The intuitive understanding of the iterative behavior,how-ever,is still not very developed.In this paper,we try an ap-proach based on so-called Analog Codes[2–4],which are codes over real or over complex numbers.Without discretizing(quan-tizing),the iterative Turbo-like decoding algorithm can be un-derstood with the tools of numerical mathematics.We show that the iterative decoding indeed converges to the least-squares solution which corresponds to the maximum-likelihood decod-ing.After describing the encoding of an analog product code in the next section,we discuss the decoding in Section III,fol-lowed by a more detailed analysis of the convergence in sec-tions IV to VI.An exemplary simulation result and some re-marks conclude the paper.II.E NCODINGThe considered discrete time communication system consists of a source with statistically independent analog(real)symbols,a block analog encoder,an additive then,it does not decrease any further.The values we obtain agree with the values obtained by applying the classical least squares algorithm.As expected,this method is not able to eliminate the noise components that lie in the solution subspace.Our further work will be devoted to how a further improvement is achieved by restricting the alphabet again to be discrete.This brings us nearer to
